I'm in the thoughts of doing a Hybrid CAI for my Wagon. I've decided to a hybrid setup using the OEM airbox and a ram air pipe from the airbox to the manifold.

Question is, would this ram work? https://www.cosmoracing.com/productinfo.asp?cid=226&pid=1561&added=1
As I mentioned above, I want to use the OEM airbox and the MAF sensors along with either the provided filter or a K&N Cone filter.

Or am I better off finding a 93 (?) intake tube and using that with my airbox and dropping in a cone/cartridge filter.

I referenced these setups for the idea.

I would check around on ebay for a similar year impreza "short ram intake". I bought the Cosmo racing one( similar pipes can be found on ebay for $30 instead $100 like Cosmo). I had previously ran a hybrid intake on my wagon.

Did a quick search for 1997 Impreza Short Ram Intake. No piping appeared.
Are they hard to come by?

Also how did the hybrid intake work for you? I'm worried about debris and water coming through, hence keeping the OE box.

I couldn't find one on ebay but I did on another site.

Much cheaper than the Cosmo one but their is one difference, the Cosmo one has a bung on the tube for the PCV hose connection while the option racing one does not. The below DIY thread shows how you can put a plastic connector in the one rubber coupler to create a PCV hose bung. It really comes down to if you want to pay $70(difference in price of two items) to have the bung already on the pipe and not drill a 1/2" hole in a rubber coupler.

Im not sure if you have seen this but this thread show how to install one of the hybrid intakes. Some of the pictures are down but other people have added pictures in their posts later on.(https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=3 ... &start=270 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1479&start=270))

I liked the hybrid intake and it worked. I had a cone filter on instead of the OE box when I first installed it and the cone gave off a sound which was "cool" but our cars have a MAF sensor and those do not like cone filters and give off mixed readings that actually hurt the cars performance(See Williatys hybrid intake thread on NASIOC). The OE box is wonderful and so is the resonator piece that is inside the wheel well.

I hope this helps because Im just going off of what I had learned from when I was looking for an intake a couple years ago.

If you just want to get rid of the ugly intake "box," the 1995 Legacy had a much less intrusive intake. I think I have one lying around.

Well, I'd like it to be bolt-on. So I don't mind paying the difference. Chris, your setup after the visit to lowe's is pretty much what I want.

Muse, would that also get rid of the snorkel's too?

I believe that coupler was in the plumbing section. It was around 4"-5" diameter. Much better fit than trying to mess around with normal intake couplers.

Oh ok, I'm gonna check what Lowe's has and I'll see what I can get from them.
so basically I'd be fine with the Cosmo intake tube and the OEM airbox. Would the cone filter work with OEM box? or should I get a K&N replacement filter?

I'd like to order it this week so next weekend I can install it.

Look at the intake box and think about the shape of a cone. You decide.

Cool, so that Cosmo intake is good to get? I do plan to order it, if it's pretty much bolt-on. I'll either use the cone filter or use the stock one.

I would stick with stock box.

I used the $40 ebay pipe and ended up modding it to work on my 98 2.2.

Pipe- 40
extra 3 inch coupler - 10
3/4 inch heater hose fitting( pvc) -3
2 ft of 1/2 inch silicone vacuum hose - 5

It wasnt bolt on nor a challenge to fab, just look at the other installs.
