Alright so I started experiencing a clicking sound coming from my front end and rattling over bumps (99 legacy gt 5mt 180k). I had a dust boot tore so I assumed it was finally my cvs going, but I found it odd both would be making noise simultaneously. I got under the car today to shake the axles down to test my theory, sure enough there was play in both. The problem though is the play is coming from the axle stubs going into the diff and not the cvs. None of the axle seals are leaking so I dont think the play is coming from the seals. What could be the cause of this play and what damage has this play caused and what needs to be done to fix? Thanks for all the help guys.

Is it rattling of clicking? Rattling could be many things. Clicking would be axles or a diff.

Center diff's are becoming more of a problem. I just replaced one in a customers car and it fixed her problem. It had a binding problem when warm in a turn.

It clicks up too about 35mph, the clicks increase with the speed. The axle stubs also rattle going over bumps, I can grab em and shake the shiz outa of em and they make all kinda racket right where they enter the diff. Turns or straight line, the problem is consistent. Thanks for the feedback Dead.

Thats what I was thinking..I feeling like its the bearings for the axle stubs, but Im no tranny expert so I really dont know.

Youre talking about the front diff, the center sits on a shaft in the rear casing of the tranny

Whatever it is I really need a diagnosis of the problem.

You already have, the bearings in the front diff are gone. Low on oil.

Are the bearing serviceable without splitting the case? Trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to replace or fix.
