So yesterday I was driving from Kelowna to Salmon Arm going to a wedding and about an hour in to the 1.5 hour drive I had to step on it to pass this guy on a hill before the passing lane ended and about 30 seconds after the pass we could smell burning???? car felt fine drove fine sounded fine so I didnt think anything of it another 30 seconds down the road I looked out my rearview mirror and saw smoke!!!!! WTF! I pulled over A.S.A.P. and got out to check under the hood and i noticed right away a beautiful sheen of oil down the side of my 98 Legacy Outback and the driverside wheel well was coated as was the inside of the rim.
I popped the hood and it looked and sounded fine (i then turned off the engine and crawled under the car to see OIL EVERY WHERE! the whole underside of the car was soaked! the top and sides of the engine were clean and dry as was the front of the engine, it looked like the oil was starting from the bottom of the timimng cover mainly the front lower driverside near the thermostat.
I let the engine cool for about 5 minutes just to let everything settle and let my blood stop boilling and I checked the oil once then twice and nothing there was no oil on the dip stick. so after a $383.00 tow (Flat deck of course) I am parked at the dealership.

My question is: What could this be?

temps were normal
idle was normal
power was normal
sound was normal

the engine is a EJ25D
the tranny is a 4EAT

Please help. thanks for any and all help.

sounds like a valve cover seal went, I've seen them leak very badly, but not so suddenly

So I heard back from the dealership this morning and was informed it was the cam seal.
$12.00 part....... but to get to it you need to take off the timing belt.
Just letting you know the out come. for cause and effect
