Guess it is time for a build thread...... My Girl Ruby

Guess I have been around here enough, I really should start a build thread. Started out life as Ruby Red Mica 98 Legacy Outback. She was my second Subaru. First was an 02 WRX making pretty darn good power for 2004.

Basically, I moved across country. On my way back to Phoenix to pick up the rest of my stuff, I dropped 2 valves in my Ranger. I needed a car like RIGHT NOW. Hit Craigslist and found this wagon sitting at a buy here pay here lot. They wanted 3500.00 for her. All things considered, that was still a great price. 159k miles on the clock. Bone stock, 2.5 dohc, 4eat, cold weather package, and very clean. We settled on 2700.00, gave them a fat stack of cash and rolled out. From the get go, the car had really bad piston slap. Always on cold days, around 3000 rpm you could hear it. When fully warmed up, it went away. Changed the oil and drove from Phoenix to Cincinnati the next day. Averaging 38 MPG at 70 MPH fully loaded.

Came back to Phoenix to visit my family 2 months later, still averaging around 35+ on the highway. While in Phoenix, I had the windows tinted, installed some JDM projectors, a front set of 03 WRX seats and tinted the headlamps and tail lamps and threw in my old WRX steering wheel and air bag.

Back in Ohio, I found a set of 07 WRX stock wheels for a smoking deal. They really cleaned up the look of the car. I drove her like this for another few months.

Then, I moved back to AZ.

I managed to talk myself into thinking the center diff was bad. Now mind you, I did not have any shuddering, drove fine, I just imagined weird noises in my head. I searched and searched for a wrecked STI, but never did find one. Found a guy parting out an 04 WRX, ended up buying the trans, rear end, axles, pedals, linkage and went to work the following weekend converting my car over to 5 speed. Shortly after, I located a set of 04 Wrx struts with all hardware.

Bam.. Now we are talking. Put nearly 100k on the car after buying her with the major issues being a fuel pump, water pump and radiator (from when the waterpump failed) Not to bad. I always had plans of swapping my car, so when I did the fuel pump I just went with the Walbro 255.

Along the way I ended up dumping the WRX wheel and found an 05 STI wheel. Added a TWM short shifter and cart boy bushings. Located a Factory rear spoiler, painted it black and installed. Other then that I just changed the oil and put gas in her.

When I moved back to Phoenix, I decided it was time to get serious. What started off as collecting parts for a simple 5psi of bolt on fun, turned into a full blown OMG GIMME DA BOOOOST hunt.

L Model Steering joint hooked to my Depowered Outback rack. Man, there is ZERO play in this, and it easily turns with one hand at a dead stop. I am going to LOVE the manual mod.

Wow... Just... Wow.
May I ask why the bumpers didn't get painted with the rest of the car?

Very nice man! This is the route I have been headed towards for my outback for the past couple months. Out of curiosity why did you not go with a stock repaint? The black looks great, but that stock color combo is by far my favorite on the outbacks.

Muse, I suspect that he is gonna go with GT bumpers later on possibly?

Thanks for the words. I am actually going to get a new set of bumper covers for her before she gets painted, and put the covers off of her on my other outback. She is currently just black primer. I figured I would get all the mechanical sorted out, make sure she is running top notch and I still have a few body mods I want to do before final paint. I agree the Ruby mica and Slate gray is the best color combo on the outbacks and I am going to be keeping her that color when I do my paint. I am also going to be smoothing out the textured portion of the covers and going Limited style where its completely painted.

I located a set of GT skirts that I will be fitting, and I am going to trim the stock front mudguards to match the contours of the GT skirts. I originally wanted to go with the spats, but I think this will give me a little more of a unique look. When I do my final paint I am also planning on color matching the roof rack. The only GT bumper I would love to fit is the Limited GTB bumper, and I dont really see myself dropping 1100 bux for just a front bumper lol..

But everyone that has seen her in satan black keeps trying to talk me into making that her permanent new color. It does look great, but hey, her name is Ruby :)

I picked up some more things that I needed last night to continue on the engine, I Hope to get the intake manifold closer to being installed tonight. Got my turbo oil drain fitting for the head, the reducers for the turbo coolant lines and am waiting on the high pressure fuel line so I can get the rails modified to clear the turbo inlet tube. I am also planning on doing a remote mount IAC as everything on the USDM manifold all resides in the same damn spot. I was kicking around the idea of EGR delete and going with a 2.2 Manual ECU to get rid of the EGR readiness for OBD2 Comliance, then going with a JDM manifold. I may still go that route in the future, but I really want to get her back on the road since I havent had her driving since March. I hope to have photos of what she looked like when I got her and a few of the changes along the way this weekend when I get my computer hooked up.

Going to start working on the steering rack here in a few minutes. I will post up some pics of the depowering process.

Oh, and hear is a little sneak peak of one of those paint twists...... WIll need to add a little more dark red toner I think.

My rack is a reman and the piston is actually a part of the rack. I pulled the seal and ground about 3 mm from the outside radius. Cleaned all the parts and realized I didn't have any grease.

Tomorrow I will get it greases assembled and plug all the open holes. More to come!

I will. I picked up the needed grease yesterday. I was going to stay after work and get the rack done, but decided to call it a day and come in the morning before it is 100 outside. Tomorrows game plan is to finish the rack, the wrx control arms (using my outback rear mounts, ghetto alk) replace the front axles and get the car off the lift so i can pull the intake off the old motor. Aparently there are some minor changes to the intake from 97 to 98. Going to keepy 98 intake for the late model coil mounts.

My turbo exhaust gaskets and timing belt guide arrived today, so hopefully i can get the majority of the motor buttoned up this weekend. Depending how things go, i might get the old motor pulled and clean up the engine bay.

Thinking I should replace the throw out bearing fork while i am in there. I did the clutch when I i did the 5 speed swap about 7k miles ago.

Well today was a good and bad day. Finished up the steering rack. Went together super smooth. Even found a set of whiteline bushings to install. Go to mount it up, and realize i have an 06 sti crossmember. Fawk me. So i almost called it a day right there. I decided to push ahead anyway, need to get the car off the flat lift so I can pull the motor and finish swapping out the non outback parts that are blocked by the rack.

Moving forward i was able to mod my sti fronts to gain a bit more camber (slotted the lowers), and got all the suspension installed in the front. With the wrx lower control arms and the sti struts, after dropping the car down i realized quickly that camber adjustments wont be an issue. Lol. I need to bust out my router so i can make my rear spacers and instLl the rear struts. I plan on getting that worked out tomorrow. The sti's with rce blacks actually drop me down more the. I was expecting. It will be interesting to se the final ride height after the rears are in and he suspension has settled. Now i need to find a 02-05 wrx front crossmember. Not what i wanted. To find out. Hopefully someone bought an 05+ sti rack they cant bolt in and will trade me straight up. One can hope. I blew the dust off her and snapped some pix. Enjoy!

So yeah, I am an idiot. I am glad I called it a day on sunday when pulling the motor, i thought I was just getting hung up on the lower studs and the motormounts on the crossmember. Like a moron, I completely forgot that I needed to pull the pivot pin on the WRX tranny to separate the pressure plate from the transmission. It is amazing what being tired does to you. Got the motor out now, picked up some different fittings for my oil drain, rotated the hks bov so now I can route the bypass hose under the manifold like I wanted too. Looked at the throwout bearing and pressure plate, it doesnt look like I damaged them with my brute force attack on sunday. Pretty much need to swap manifolds, put my 550 sti side feeds in, make my fuel line mods to clear the under intake turbo inlet, and get a manifold to up pipe gasket. Should be able to have all the plumbing done on the motor this week and have it ready to drop in this weekend.

I am still trying to source a damn early wrx crossmember, and I may just notch the current one as a temporary stop gap so I can move forward. Will be easy enough to do with the motor out of the way.

Hinyo
09-27-2014, 10:20 AM
I say go for it and notch it. Wouldn't be the first time someones done it. Is there any actual benefit to having the early wrx cross member compared to the legacy cross member? if its not any beefier just use what you got.

The WRX crossmember will let me rub WRX or STI control arms for a wider track. I did a little looking at both cross membera and some interwebs research and i think i will mod the new crosber to fit. I need to make the hole the rack comes through and do some
Shaving at one of the mounts. I should be able to make it work. No one has a wrx xmember anywhere close to me.

You can use the wrx/sti control arms with the legacy turbo crossmember as well. You just have to change the forward bushings.

Progress has been slow the last week, but I spent 5 hours on her yesterday. Finished swapping all the outback lift parts onto the parts car, now being lowered will have less negative handling issues. I still need to pull the driveshaft and change the carrier bearing to the non outback unit. Just need to bolt the steering rack back into the parts car to make her a roller again.

Waiting on my emanage injector adapter to get rid of my cel codes. Need to bring my dp to the exhaust shop to have the bung welded for the wideband. Ordered up a few pressure tranducers for a new project I am doing for the car. Depending on how it turns out, i verywell may build a few sets.

Current list of items to finish to get the car running:

Make saggy butt spacers from the hdpe i have.
Install STI rear struts.
Finish fuel lines and wiring on intake manifold.
Transfer flywheel and clutch to new motor.
Modify 06 STI cross member to mount my Legacy depowered rack.
Wire up Aem wideband.
Wire up Greddy Profec
Wire up Greddy option map sensor.
Transfer Greddy EMU from Courtney to Ruby.
Swap dual core radiator from Courtney to Ruby.
Lengthen FozXT MIdpipe to STI axleback
Swap out Outback drive shaft carrier bearing.
Rewire headlamps.
Install front bumper.
Set toe. It is WAYYYYYY off.
Drop new motor in.
Rebuild wrx starter (needs new contact)
Add fluids, check for leaks. Test fire.

I guess that really is not a huge list of things left.

Items that need to be addressed in the near future:
Wrx rear lat links.
New susp bushings
Whiteline anti roll kit.
Custom 3" catback.
Reinstall interior.

Received my Emanage injection adapter, wired into my Ultimate on Car#2. No check engine lights, EJ22 running STI Yellow top injectors just like stock. My self made plug and play adapter seems to be working quite well.

Received 150psi .5 - 4.5v pressure transducer. This is getting integrated into my Arduino project to show Boost, oil pressure, temp and fuel pressure. Ordered up a 1.3 White LCD to replace the factory temp gauge for this.

Received my 3 pin toyota connector to wire up the WRX coolant temp sensor to my car. Now I have everything I need to finish the engine harness.

Received the rest of the exhaust gaskets I needed to mount the turbo for its final time.

Pulled the complete exhaust from my car and mounted up my STI Axle back. When I get the motor in I can make my measurements for my midpipe. I have a few different exhaust ideas that I am kicking around. Input is appreciated. My current options are as follows:

1. Use the stock STI exhaust with the FXT midpipe (longer resonator) and extend as needed. 2.5 piping all the way other then my 3" Catted DP. Figure this will be the least expensive, approimately 10 bux for some 2.5 stainless.

2. Ebay M2 Cobb style 3" exhaust, add an appropriate resonator to give me the length and kill drone (This will run me right around 200 after shipping and a good 3" resonator.

3. Full custom 3" exhaust. If I go this route it will be stainless. I figure this will run me about 400 plus convincing my brother in law to do the tig welding on it. By far the most expensive and most time consuming. But probabally the biggest overall gains and best look.

Got my new Plugs and wires, oil, filter.

Nearly done re routing fuel lines for my under manifold turbo inlet. Thinking I am going to fab my own and sell my new Perrin unit. I might just mod the stock STI unit I have, but I am concerned about the possibility for it to fail and being a giant PITA to replace after the mani is bolted down.

Ordered up a new Outback front bumper cover from Subaru. Should be here in a few days. Will get the front and rears primed black to match the car so I can roll around murder style until she is ready for paint.

Today I really hope to get my Whiteline ALK installed and finish modding the 06 crossmember to fit my 98 rack.

List of things to accomplish:

Complete under mani turbo inlet.

Finish Custom fuel line parallel mod.

Complete harness mods.

Complete Cross member mods to fit rack.

Mod steering rag joint (shorten) to fit with spacer deleted parts.

install motor after steering figured out.

Install Whiteline ALK kit.

Install new front axles

Remove starter and rebuild (needs new solenoid contact) 10 dollar fix.

Remove Outback drive shaft, replace carrier bearing with L bearing

Install L model exhaust heat shields.

Make saggy butt spacers (have material)

Install rear STI struts

Install L rear swaybar mounts

Wire Wide band

Wire Oil pressure Transducer

Wire Boost gauge

Get shorter Alt belt for the PS pump delete

Wire Greddy Boost controller

Complete exhaust. I may just do a quick hack on the mid pipe to get her running and worry about my 3" setup after I get through emissions.

Make hood splitter to get air over the intercooler. Going to mod the Outback block off plate.

Wire Infinity Auto dim mirror

Wire WRX maf Plug with IAT sensor to Emanage

3m Window Weld up my motor mounts and pitch stop for ghetto Group N mounts.

Install 97 GT radiator (way bigger then the current single core)

Install front bumper

Install RT Rear door handle in front door (key delete)

Finish side moldings. I have a super cheap DIY alternative to the retarded expensive JDM side moldings. I will post photos and a DIY when I get that far. I already have the moldings. They will look great!

Paint my wheels

Need WRX Lat Links, and new bushings in the rear trailing arms.

Undercoat where needed.

I still need to put my interior back together, but I want all the bugs worked out before I do.

Finish my WRX ATI triple meter install (need to make mounts and wire up the gauges)

Finish my Cluster conversion. Installing a 2002 outback cluster for now, BFG are in the works. Again, things to mess with after the car passes inspection.

Alignment

Things not needed right away but that are in the works before car is painted:

Wheel FLares and bigger meat 18x9's all around.

04 STI scoop on my spare L hood.

Front and rear cam mounting for parking/speed bumps.

Custom trunk area for amp/sub/tire

Dye Carpet

Replace seat belts (need to bring into Subaru for warranty on the fronts)

Modded center console for cup holder as to not destroy another 500 headunit with pepsi.

Custom Door cards and headliner covering.

Complete interior LED conversion

PPG Gearset.

DYNO TUNE!

I think that is it for right now. I will definately post up some pics shortly. Hoping to get the steering done today. Then I can get the motor in and start finishing up some of the bigger projects.

Side note, It appears that the car I am currently driving (my $400.00 parts car) 97 Outback had the motor replaced once. So it was very surprising that it had a popped head gasket and was using the crappy standard composite gaskets. BUT it is a phase 2 block. So I think after everything is done, this motor will get a mild build with STI Guts before I put it together and drop it back in. I am currently rocking a 2.2 in this car that I pulled from a parts car I picked up.

Wish me luck! Gunna be a busy week.

I know, I thought that after I finished typing it all out. was seriously trying to get everything in my head down. I am basically using this as my to do list lol. Forgot, need to drill holes in my rocker panels for my GT skirts and trim my outback mud guards to fit them. Today was a crazy busy day at work, so as usual, I get nothing done on my own car. Not having a garage currently totally sucks and after 10 hours stuck here all day, it makes it really hard to want to stay another 3 or 4 hours and work on it or come in on the weekend. It would be so much better to go home, relax, eat dinner, have a beer and wrench on the car in the garage with the TV on or radio in the back ground.

Picked up 2 catch cans, a set of paranoid saggy butt spacers and kartboy xl hangers. Hope to get at least the rear suspension in and figure out getting my rack installed tomorrow

Ok. Today was productive. Photos being sent to my bucket now

Removed 06 sti xmember. Modded the crossmember and rack so now the fit together like they should. Just needed some clearancing on both parts to make them work. Way easier then notching the legacy member. Pressure washed then reinstalled.

Front axles replaced. Steering hooked up except the rag joint. Looks like I might be swapping columns, or shortening the outback unit. Haven't decided. Prolly go the right way and do the column.

Rear sti struts installed with the 3/8's spacers.

Drive shaft carrier bearing changed to L model.

Can now install the heat shields!

Removed all old tranny lines from when she was an auto

Gutted my outback transverse mounts for my alk parts

Pretty much have all the suspension done other then the alk and setting the toe.

Pulled the flywheel from the old motor.

Getting some 3m window weld tomorrow to fill the motor mounts and the spare set of transverse mounts plus the pitch stop. Car is back on the ground and basically after I plug the egr port in the head and fab a turbo brace the motor can be dropped in the car. Should be able to get the engine in Monday. Then it's just finishing the intake manifold, fuel rails, catch cans, wire harness and bolting on the accessories. Once the motor is in, I can mark my downpipe for the wideband and lengthen my mid pipe then get them tig welded up. That will button up the underside of the car.

So we got a little progress!

posted up some pix of last week and yesterday. As you can see, my front axle boots were toast from being dropped with the outback spacers still in. Should be in great shape now as they dont rub on themselves anymore.

Got my 1.3" Oled screen from China on Friday. Started playing with it a little. Did a quick proto board with some code to scroll through menus with buttons. I am thinking about mounting this where the door ajar lights are. I am thinking I should be able to make this look pretty damn close to factory. I will add the push button in one of the cluster surround spaces and maybe do an info label like what the late model cars have.

Now I will spend a little time getting the 150 PSI pressure transducer to play nice with the Arduino and actually spit out real information to the screen. I got the white face screen as I will be clearing the green off the 02 outback cluster I have making it light up white with LED's.

Tomorrows project will be getting the steering column out of my L wagon and dropping it into the outback with the correct rag joint to make the car a full roller, then get the motor dropped in and bolted up so I can work on exhaust and wiring. I think I will also completely pull everything out of the interior so I can steam clean the carpet and Dye it black, along with getting my Heated seat pads installed into my wrx seats. With all the interior out of the way, it will make it a little easier to run the wiring for the gauges, and transfer the Emanage from wagon 2 into its new home in wagon 1. I want to drive my car before turkey day!

Ordering up an STI Titanium key blank tomorrow, and when it arrives, I will have both my outbacks keyed the same. I have 2 viper alarms and that way I can use one key and fob to drive both.

I also realized on friday one thing. I need to pull the rear struts out one more time. I will need to add the extended studs so I can install a rear strut bar. The good thing is, I have taken the struts out so many times, I can do the rears in about 15 minutes.

Well today made me very happy. I have great news, good news, and not so good news. lol

Great news! Motor is in its new home. I couldnt find the box that have the motor and starter bolts in it. I need to empty out the parts car as they are all in one box. I know they cant be too far.

Swapped out my steering columns, greased and cleaned everything before putting it back together. Steering is TIGHT. It should be an absolute blast to hammer through the canyons.

Simple greened the engine bay, frame rails, rad support and under hood before dropping the motor in. Cleaned it up a ton. With a proper detail, underhood should look close to new.

Put the intake on the car and ran into some issues. When I test fit everything on the motor when I got it, unfortunately I had the Outback spacers in, dropping the motor an inch. Well, as you can see in the photos, that inch makes a huge difference. The clearance issues I have now are BEFORE the grimspeed spacers being installed. Looks Like I will need to trim the hood a bit, and cut up the scoop to make it clear. I think I will find an 04 WRX hood scoop and gut my L hood to make everything clear how I want. I am pretty close to giving up on the under manifold turbo inlet with all the headaches it has given me. I would love to find a proper phase1 intake, maybe a B4 Legacy long runner and get rid of the EGR all together.

Or, maybe I will just suck it up and go front mount with a rotated intake to minimize lag.

Wont have much time to work on the car tomorrow, but Wed, I plan on getting the car back up on jack stands, get the turbo mounted so I can mount the down pipe. This will let me mark the bung location for the wide band, and lengthen my midpipe.

My goal is to have her turn over by Turkey day. I have all the fluids, just need a few more gaskets, a few more feet of 7mm fuel injection line and a new fuel filter. WOOHOO I am so happy to be this close.

Should be fun wiring up the EBC, Greddy Boost sensor, and the gauges.

Small update today. Have been horribly sick so I didn't get much done yesterday. Today I mocked up the turbo and spt intake, the downpipe ans sti catback. Won't really need to add much to the mid pipe to work looks like about 4". I mounted the midpipe to the axle back so I can use all the rear stock hangers.

Basically I need to bend a few brackets where all the vac solinoids mount and the evap pump bracket to clear the wastegate actuator. Need to straighten the cruise servo mount to clear the intercooler.

Going to,use the 2010 sti turbo inlet for now, cut the original bypass inlet off and plug it, then add a 1" 45 nipple before it goes under the manifold.

More pix to follow when photobucket updates

Photos of this weeks mock ups. Showing how tight of a fit everything is under the hood. you can see that just about everything needs to be moved just a hair one way or the other. The ebay exhaust appears to need the same treatment. With the STI muffler and mid pipe, I was able to use all the original hangers but one to have things fit and look good. With the Ebay unit, looks like I will need to move/modify all the hangers to get the pipe where I want it. But for $100 bux for the exhaust and 60 bux to order the Vibrant 3" resonator, it still is way better then having to modify a $500.00 exhaust or custom fab a complete unit.

Today I will try and get my turbo to head bracket made, mount the turbo, run the coolant and oil lines, and maybe start modding the turbo inlet.

I still need to pull apart the starter as well to get the rebuild parts I need from a local vendor. I also need to find a suitable 6 pin connector from my parts car so I can cut off the giant auto trans plugs from the tunnel and have everything look factory. ALso need to extend the 02 sensor wires to get them installed and route the harness accordingly.

Once the main parts are in, I can figure out where to mount the EBC Solenoid, Boost gauge sender, catch cans, and other misc crap.

Today I will see about ordering my new alternator belt sans PS pump, New AC belt, rad hoses, fuel filter and 10' of fuel line. Looks like I am kidless most of the weekend so my goal is to get the motor buttoned up and get the car to the point where I can put oil in it and atleast crank it with the starter to prime the system, maybe a test fire if the gods are smiling on me. It wont be road worthy this weekend, but I would love to know that my hard work is getting me somewhere.

A lot more mockup today. Started to mod the turbo inlet. Cut off the stock bpv nipple and tweaked a few of the others for clearance. Mounted the iac valve to see what I need to do to pull air from.the inlet. I figured out where the catch can will go, trying to decide if I will run a single or both units. Adjusted evertlything on the firewall to clear the intercooler. Need to figure out where to mount the egr diaphragm and solenoid.

Figured out where the boost solenoid is going and where the map sensors will be as well. Hope to get a bunch done tomorrow. Pix to follow

Moving along slowly but surely. Today I picked up some 3" mild steel to make a temporary exhaust extension for the mid pipe until ,y resonator arrives. I will be able to get all the hangers mocked up and fit everything how I want. Finished the turbo inlet. Turned out pretty good I think. Was able to run my hks bov full recirculating. Figured out what I am doing for the iac. Need to pick up some more hose tomorrow. Cut the tab of my intake that was in the way and decided to go a bit further. I took all the ugly casting marks off and smoothed everything out. Also plugged the egr holes in the head and manifold.

Tomorrow I will get the intake manifold sprayed with vht black, steel wool the hard lines to clean them all up. Install the sti injectors and start the engine wiring. The vf48 will get mounted in its new home tomorrow with the oil and coolant lines.

It's close. Really close. If I have a great day tomorrow, I should have her ready for a first start. Still have some things to button up. But if I can get the turbo done, harness modded and intake mani mounted, everything else is busy work.

TurBo is mounted. Downpipe installed. Finished cleaning and painted the intake manifold. Coolant lines made aND run to the turbo. Oil feed and drain lines connected. Swapped all the parts to the other intercooler. Tightened all the intake fittings. Wiped 3 weeks of body's hop dust off her.

Jacked my hood up. I had it in the full up position, let her down off the jackstands and the rod slid out. Hood came slamming down onto the coIL pack sitting in the fender well I was able to work most of the damage out. It was just irritating. Took an hour to clean all the orange silicone sealant the last owner of my down pipe used instead of gaskets. Thankfully it is stainless and I made quick work of it with a roloc wheel. Decided to let the intake sit overnight to cure before assembling the fuel system and wiring.

Things left to do to test fire:

Install intake manifold with fuel lines and sti injectors
install engine harness. Change coolant temp plug.

Lengthen wires for oil dummy light.

Install all ground straps

Install starter

Rewire manual Trans plugs with new connectors.

install clutch fork and slave cyl

Wire wrx maf

Install emanage

Oil

ThaThat should get her running. Still need to fab and install exhaust. Install afr gauge and wire to emanage

Put the doors together and reinstall the headliner.

Also need to set the toe and camber and tighten/cotter pin all the steering nuts.

Game plan is to get the electrical done tomorrow and test firfire the beast on wed.

Also looks like I might be pulling the saggy butt spacers from the rear. But I think I need to let the car settle first.

Thanks Dynonacht, I wasnt feeling it this morning. Then after the hood incident, I was ready to call it a day. Getting her wiped down and the bumper on gave me a little more oomph to get some more completed.

I think being frozen when the snow comes would be a great motivator! lol.

Ok setting up a poll. need opinions. Black out the throttle body or leave it natural. I am going to clean it and hit it with a brass brush here.

This was the result of my motivation. Need to get the turbo on now.

Your car looks a million times better, that should be motivation enough :)

I totally thought about doing that after seeing it online. The kick ass electronics will come after i get the drivabilty handled and get some more time working with the programming portion.

Todays update: long day at work all I managed to accomplish was getting the intake manifold put together. Fuel rails, lines, iac, tb, egr all bolted up. Going to completely strip the harness down and redo it. I am seriously considering moving the engine connectors to the firewall away from
The turbo and compltely making a new engine harness. The wires are all pretty hard. The loom is disinigrating and it looks its age. I need to check my electronics box and see if i have the correct pins from when i built my last harness.

I am extremly happy that i was able to figure everything out with the under mani turbo inlet. I really wish there wernt so many vac lines tho. It looks like a bowl of noodles.

The clutch pivot has been fighting me, i cant get it to slide in the last little bit. I was getting frustrated so i stopped trying to get it done. Replaced all the orings for the fuel rails, wire brushed most if the crap off the fuel rails, tb and iac. Installed the turbo check valve behind the iac motor.

Basically down to wiring, exhaust, and cooling system. Some odds and ends. I really thing i will have first start video on wed. Even if its just 3" down pipe and nothing else. I will upload todays pix shortly.

Didn't get much done yesterday. Pulled the engine harness apart, started mapping it out. Took apart the starter and cleaned everything in it. Regressed reducting gears and pit it back together. Messed with my grill a bit. Forgot to bring my wiring tools to work so I did not want to get too crazy. Brought them today tho and hope to accomplish the following:

Build engine harness, lengthen wires and change to wrx style coolant plug, repair cuts in tps wires, extend purge and egr solenoid wiring, lengthen 02 sensor wiring. Reloom with nylon. Change out injectors to yellow tops. Hook up emanage. Wire wastegate open. Install starter. Install wrx maf plug. Install intake parts. Test fire! Hoped today will be productive. I need a win here.

Well, today was SUPER HAPPY!!! Followed soon after with absolute crushing sadness.

Today I was able to build my new engine harness. Pretty much spent 5 hours on it. Split all 3 plugs into their own separate looms. The small loom is only the crank and cam sensors, the middle harness is fuel injectors, IAC, EGR solenoid, Coil and grounds. The final harness is for the TPS, Purge Solenoid, coolant sensor, and oil pressure sensor.

Everything was completely dissassembled, checked all the wiring, cleaned all the contacts, and reloomed with some awesome expandable nylon wrap and shrink tubing. All connectors were completely removed and the EGR Solenoid wiring was transfered from the main loom to the secondary loom as they shared the common power wire.

While I was in there, I also lengthened the coolant temp wires and changed to the wrx style plug. I also lengthened the wires for both the EGR and Purge solenoids so I can mount them in a different location.

I was able to finally get the Throw out fork pivot installed, put in my freshly cleaned up starter, and threw some 02 sensors in the manifold and down pipe. I still need to lengthen the wires for the 02 sensors.

Cut the plug off the inhibitor switch so I can actually wire in the clutch switch and reverse lights properly. I have been running around for 2 years with the pins just taped into the connectors.. I am honestly surprised I never had any problems with it.

I stuffed the WRX MAF wires into the Legacy plug just to make sure I had it setup correctly.

After the first start, I noticed the throttle was not returning to closed. The throttle cable freyed and was hanging up. Pulled the one out of the parts car, and got her installed. Just like butter.

I pretty much have all the PCV hoses and IAC hose setup.

Then... looking under the car.. huge HUGE puddle of oil. I need to get the car on the lift tomorrow so I can find out where exactly it is coming from. I am HOPING it is the oilpan. But I highly doubt it. The only other good spot it can be the oil drain where it is tapped into the head. Based on the little I could see from under the car, I am seriously nervous that it is coming from the back of the motor, or possibly one of the Orings between the block..... The ONLY part of the motor I did not personally do, was put the bottom end together. Ofcourse I paid a mechanic to do it. But I dont want to get too damn upset over it until I know for sure.

I really dont want to pull the motor again, but I much rather have to do it now, since basically its 8 bolts, and unplugging the harnesses and fuel.

I fired her up with stock injectors. After I took the crappy startup video, I hooked up the intercooler and plugged all the vac leaks. Idles very good. Snappy throttle response. I was actually able to pull her out of the shop and back her into her spot again. Cleaned up all the dust and crap that accumulated.

Tomorrow I will get her up on the lift, hopefully find and fix the oil leak, set the toe and eyball the camber, and get all the balljoint bolts tightened and put in the cotter pins.

I need to hard wire in the WRX Maf plug, Hard wire in the Clutch and reverse switches properly and tidy up everything. If I dont need to pull the motor, I can finish installing the cooling system and the alternator and AC compressor. Verified after my short run that the timing is good, so I can also install the timing belt covers and balance pulley.

It was great and disheartning all at once.

If the motor needs to come back out, I think I will work on getting the interior put back together first. I need a little break from the damn motor.

Pics and startup vid to follow. Keep in mind, sticking throttle cable and an intercooler sized vac leak lol.

Mounted the intake with all new gaskets and my grimspeed spacers. Moved the EGR stuff so it cleared the BOV, replaced the fuel lines, and as always, had them backwards the first time...

Filled her with oil, unplugged the coil and turned her over a few times.

well, my worst fears.. I need to pull the motor. Got her up on the lift, stuffed a mirror between the flywheel and the motor, Looks like the top galley plug is leaking at the crush washer. It is basically spraying oil on the back of the flywheel and that is slinging it all over the cradle and exhaust and steering rack.

I am pretty defeated right now. I will wait until next weekend to get the motor pulled back out. I might wire in my mirror and gauges and get the EMU hooked up and finish putting the interior together. I need to Swap the front seats out of my other outback once Ruby is back up and running. Then, I need to pull the tranny on my other car to replace the broken throw out fork. Sad banana.

oh but on the plus side.. I got my toe set pretty close, still a little towed in, driving the car from the lift back into my stall, the manual rack conversion is friggin awesome. even with the small STI wheel, I was able to turn the wheel one handed. So I guess there is that.... Lol.

Well spent a little time on my girl today when it was slow. Managed to finish tightening every suspension bit under the car, installed the rear sway bar and L model Sway mounts. Started to strip the nasty orange spray paint off the wheels.... This will be a nightmare. I got one wheel face nearly done, the spray paint has to be 5 or 6 coats thick in some spots. I realized after about 40 minutes that this just wasnt going to work. so basically, I think I will spray bomb these wheels charcoal gray and stick them on Outback#2 and spray the silver wheels off the other car.

Also took the rest of the outback exhaust shielding off the car, Even the muffler shield is an issue because they welded an extension to it that hits the muffler.

I also spent a little time cleaning up the car. I figured if she looked pretty, that would give me some motivation to keep going on her. I downloaded the wiring diagram for the I30 mirror I am wiring up in the car.

I wanted to start her so badly.. but I resisted the urge to pump another quart of oil out of my freshly built motor. The only thing left to do on the suspension is hack together my ALK kit, the problem with that, is I have been unable to find the box with the bushings in it. I have my urathane here, just missing the most important part!

Ordered up my pilot rear wiper arm, a new hood prop rod retainer, another gallon of Rotella, and lug nuts. I also decided I am going to mod both the STI exhaust I have and the 3". I will run the STI exhaust and stock downpipe with cats to go threw emissions, then throw up the 3" stainless after I get my new tags.

Thats pretty much all till monday. I plan on getting the motor back out and fixing the leak then. Depending on how quickly I can do that, I might get it stuffed back in the hole monday as well.

Ok update time. Pulled the motor back out today. Wasn't planning on going into the shop today. But damn I really want to drive my car. Just as I thought, the oil galley plug above the oil separator plate was left loose and had no crush washer. This is what I get for paying someone to split my cases and reseal it. Problem fixed. Cleaner all the oil off the motor, trans, cross member. Also re did my oil drain line and rotated the clamps so I can get to them in the car. Hard wired in my wrx maf plug and the clutch/reverse harness I made. Was able to get the motor back in the hole. Monday I will get the starter in, and finish hooking everything else back up so I can fab up the exhaust and drive it. I will leave the stock injectors in and wire the wastegate open and make sure all systems are go prior to putting in the emanage. After I get it through emissions, let the tuning begin!! Also threw the gt rocker molding on one side to see what she looks like. Looks like I won't be able to modify the outback mud flaps to work with the rocker molding and will need to get some rally armor. Pics to follow!

Eff eff eff my life. So got eveything back together today. All the plumbing, intercooler, starter, down pipe. Fired her up. Purrrrrsss like a kitten. If that kitten was a tiger cub. Then.... drip. Drip. Drip. Still has an oil leak. Carb cleaner sprayed everything that had oil residue on it. Back up on the lift. Still getting oil dripping from the back of the motor. It is defiantly coming from the driver side. The only thing I can think of is the piston clip cover or the rear main is leaking. Everything was so oil soaked when I pulled it that it would have been impossible to see a secondary leak. I defiantly solved the worst of it. But it looks like the motor needs to come back out yet again. I already had the radiator and coolant in it at this point. So I decided to take her for a quick spin down the street anyway. It is rinning with the wastegate flapper open. Even with no boost, she defiantly feels stronger then before. I can't wait to get the bugs worked out and actually get to force some air in her.

I also did my ghetto alk setup today. Can't put them on yet, probably a wednsday job. Looks like I may have sucess fully saved myself 150 bux.

Debating on doing the exhaust before I pull the motor out again, and I am pretty beat from the non stop work on her the last 3 weeks. I guess I will see what happens. Uploading new pix to photobucket now. Will link after dinner.

Got my STI Key cut. Fit the ignition beautifully. I did however have to take some emery cloth to it to make it fit the door locks. It was funny listening to my locksmith tell me I am stupid and it wont work. When I picked up my lock and keys this morning and he stuck the key in, he felt pretty stupid that he argued with me over the phone. Oh well.

Also my ghetto ALK kit turned out great. I will get some more photos of it when I get them installed. I didnt take any photos of the during phase, because I know how urethane is and I was not about to get any on my phone.

Quick DIY on the Ghetto ALK kit. Parts needed:
OUTBACK Transverse mounts
W0562 is the service kit for KCA359.
3M Window-Weld Super Fast Urethane, Black, 10.5 fl oz Cartridge 08609

Take your blown out Outback bushings, press out the rubber guts, careful, this might be messy if there is still oil in them! Do NOT press out the sleeve for the bushing. The Whiteline bushings have a smaller diameter then the outback hole.

Take your Whiteline replacement bushings. Cut with a sharp ass utility knife 2/3rds from the fat end of the bushing.

Note the orientation, the notch goes on the bottom. you will also need to pay very close attention as you need one left and one right. so mark your parts before you start so you do not put one together backwards.

Press the crush tube into the longer section of the Whiteline bushing. Now make sure it is set correctly in the housing. I had a spare set of control arms, so this was way easy for me, I put the assembly on the control arm mount. I then filled the back side of the mount with Urethane. Make sure to work it in good. Now take the remaining portion of your bushing, again, watch orientation, the fat part goes to the TOP of the mount. Press this onto the crush tube. I then took the factory washer and nut, and tightened the assembly until everything fit flush. Be aware that urethane will ooze out. Once everything is snug, do the other side. Now let those bad boys sit for 2 or 3 days. This will let the urethane cure, and completely capture your bushings just like stock. When complete, you should end up with this:

New alternator belt for my Power steering delete worked great. Napa PN#050275 I think it breaks down to a 5 rib 27.5" belt.

I will get my exhaust all fabbed up before I pull my motor for what should HOPEFULLY be the final time.

I also received my new throw out bearing fork from Subaru yesterday, so I can fix the white beast as well. Two subie outbacks with motor pulls in one weekend.. Fun times.

More updates to come

Got some more done today. Got the 3" exhaust fabbed in. I need to adjust the axle back section as it was welded incorrectly from china. The section to the muffler needs to ve rotated to get the rear of the muffler up higher and make the mid pipe tuck up a little further.

I was able to pull the motor and made sure to go over every bit on the block. The oil separator plate that was installed by my mechanic wasn't sealed. Just screwed in loosely. After pulling the plate, I also saw that the wrist pin plug was not installed. So after putting the plug in, I reinstalled the plate with fujibond. I also pulled the left side wrist pin access hole and installed the oring the mechanic left out. I will be replacing the rear main seal as well on monday. Glad the gasket kit came with 3 of them. Looks like he had it seated sideways. I need to get the seal press.

Also drilled out my down pipe and welded in the 02 bing for my wideband. Put the EMU into my car. She fired right up. But it looks like I have some wiring to figure out as it doesn't shut off with the key. Looks like some minor wire diffwrenches between 97/98. Cleaned up some transmission wiring, and mounted the boost sensor for my gauge to the firewall.

Maybe tomorrow i will go in and paint my wheels and get the ebc and gauges mounted. Getting closer. Oh. And the eBay Cobb replica. Actually sounds pretty damn good. And it is quieter then I was expecting. I think I will be very happy with it once I get it all sorted out.

Knocked a few more things off the list today. ReAR main seal was replaced. All the engine bay wiring was completed other then the final placement of the boost controller and map sensor. Lengthened my o2 wiring. Motor back in down pipe installed wideband installed. 550cc injectors in. Need to wire up the wide band power and logging wires still. Alternator installed.

Tomotrow I will get the radiator in and fill up the coolant. Top off the oil and throw a base tune on the car. I need to get a second coolant temp sensor just for the emu and will start to do some tuning if I don't run into any gremlins. Need to pick up some vac hose for the boost gauge. Boost controller and Greddy map sensor.

Hope to be boosting on turkey day!

Ok, Mostly excited about this post.

Got my girl up and running. Currently running stock injectors and ECU with the waste gate actuator disconnected. I am hunting down some electrical gremlins at this point.

I pulled the EMU from Leggy #2, and installed her in the car. I was getting a crank and no start, codes for cam, crank, and i figured I may have had one of my connectors come loose when I was installing it. I need to run the multi meter on all the leads to see where my problem is.

I have been getting an intermittent crank/cam sensor code, and some really erratic fueling. Watching the Wideband my afr's are all over the place. The ecu will start out pig rich, as it hunts for its target, it will get to 14.5-14.9 and develop a miss, then go super lean and die. Blip of the throttle will quickly bring the afrs back down.. but it will go pig rich again.

1/3 throttle will mostly clear up really quick, afrs down in the 11's with NO BOOST and she stops sputtering and goes well up till about 4k where it quickly heads for lean.

Tomorrow I will go through and double check all the intake bolts, replace the egr gasket, IAC gasket, and throttle body gasket. I will also pull the injectors again. when I was not able to get the sti injectors going as my EMU developed a wiring issue when pulling from the other car.

When I pulled the stock injectors I put them in a bag, and somehow ended up with an extra injector from my other motor. I think the odd man out injector might not be flowing as well as the others and causing my rich to lean w/misfire condition. But again, I do not know for sure. So tomorrow is going to be going through wiring and working out the small bugs before I apply BOOOOSSSTTT.

I think my erratic AFR might also be partly due to the fuel situation. the car had an just under a quarter tank of old gas. To this I added 2 gallons of E85 and topped off with 93. I think the mix of the old and the e85 might be making the factory O2 sensor freak out. I have put about 80 miles on her and have burned through half a tank due to the rich condition, I will top her off again with some fresh 93 tomorrow and see how it goes.

I will get some updated pix here shortly.

Even with the waste gate flapper left open, in 3rd on throttle it will get up to 2-3 psi of boost. I am really happy that the car with no boost still pulls harder then the quarter of a million mile motor that i am replacing.

Yesterday I also sprayed the wheels gray from the ronald mcdonald orange, went back through and double checked all my suspension bolts, swapped my seats, and did a quick clean up of the car.

Thanks for the kind words guys. It has been a long road to get her running and I still have some work ahead of me.

Today I got the afr's to stabilize. Put a check valve in between the manifold and the pressure sensor, hope that will help with the fueling a bit. Changed out the cam and crank sensors just to be sure. Pulled the intercooler and trimmed the elbow to fit a little better, and made sure all the wiring was secure. Zip tied all the small vac lines and hose clamped all the larger lines. Pulled the plugs and they all looked good. #3 looked a little lighter then the other 3 so I put the other injector in that hole.

Fixed the wiring on my headlamps so they work how I want again and think it will be good to run through to set all emissions crap in the ecu. I think tomorrow for sh1ts n giggles I will pull the cam covers and double check my timing now that I have put some miles on her. Fingers crossed that she runs good this weekend so I can get through emissions and wire up my emu and 550 injectors.

One step closer!

50 miles more and the cam sensor error is back and hit rev limit at 5k. Looks like I am going to need to check timing tomorrow. Might also need to replace the reluctor as the one I used came off a blown motor that came in a car I bought as a non runner. Thinking might be off a hair with the timing or one of the lic idlers moved. So we have some more troubleshooting to do.

meepers
12-01-2014, 12:30 PM
So I went through the whole front of the motor, Looks like timing was off by 1/2 a tooth on the intake side. LIC adjustable timing kit is very finicky. I reset the timing, but it all back together, looked good. Put her all back together, fired her up, and had no codes. Made it about 600 feet before she reset the code.

So I will be ordering a new cam sensor, new timing belt adjuster, and putting the reluctor cam gear from my old motor on the car. Those are really the ONLY 3 things it could be at this point. I dont think it is the Cam sensor, as I pulled it from a working motor, but for 30 bucks, I am not going to take the chance.

So she is parked again for the time being.

Well I decided to pull the timing covers off today. As I suspected, the belt is loose, causing the timing to fluctuate. Guess I blew out the tensioner with all my on/off work. Ordered up a new timing kit. I bought the Gates racing kit with LIC idlers second hand, they were only supposed to be on a car that ran for one weekend, and I will say, they looked brand new when he was pulling them off his super clean 500+ HP motor. But I dont want to have to take it apart again so I will just go ahead and replace everything.

With any luck, that will take care of the last of the engine issues. Fingers Crossed.

Man that sucks on what your going thru with the timing components. Hopefully next one will fixed all the issues. First time I've ever heard of the lic adjustble idlers. The recent engine I rebuilt (in my GT wagon now) is fine around town but on the freeways past 70 it keeps throwing a missfire code on 3&4. Changed plugs/wire and installed a good coil and still doing it. Maybe I need to try out the lic adjuster. Glad you got the electronics figured out though. I was gonna do an emanage on my BD when I get my smog done but came up with wrx swap at picknpull

So I have been pretty disinterested in my car the last 2 weeks due to the minor issues. Well I had to go into work today to fix my sisters mother in laws car. While waiting on parts I decided to screw with ruby for a bit. I was laying in bed last night and it crossed my mind that when I was getting cam errors when the timing belt spun teeth. When that happened before I pulled the cam covers I spliced in wiring direct to the ecu to the cam sensor. So on a whim, I cut the shrink tube where I cut the harness. I had a bad solder joint. The shrink tube held it together enough to get signal and work under3500 rpm. A little trim and crimp connector later, holy crap! No more cel when reving over 3k. So I throw the crank pully, alt Belt and radiator back on. Quick spin around the block and she runs without a hiccup. Hooked the wastegate arm back up and holy hell. Pulls hard at 6psi in all gears. Afr rock solid at 12.0 wot. It is very easy to light up all four tires in first gear.

So looks like I will be working late Monday getting the wiring buttoned up, installing the boost controller and ordering up a gm coolant sensor to interface to the emu.

So friggin happy that all the hard work and headaches have paid off. More to come!

So I spent most of my day yesterday going through the old girl. I hardwired the EMU into the main harness. Not what I wanted to do originally, but it is way easier to track down issues this way. Got the interior 80% together. Headliner is in, Infinity self dimming mirror is in, visors in, head unit installed, wired my UEGO into the EMU, ran the wiring for my Boost controller, figured out where I am going to mount said boost controller.

Put about 60 miles on her last night. Boost is rock solid @6psi, made sure my BOV is working correctly, the HKS is really quiet in recirc mode. I was expecting to hear more sound from the intake, but with the BOV dumping basically right into the turbo it just makes a quiet woosh sound.

Developed a few noises in the front end, thinking that some bits shifted around and need to be tripple checked for tightness. That works out fine as the car will be going to get aligned this week now that she is a solid driver. All OBD tests are set to OK other then the cat monitor, I will have to put some more miles on the car tonight to get that to set clear. After that I can run her through emissions and get her re registered and not run the dealer plate.

I think I will take my old seats apart after xmas, and transfer the heaters into my wrx seats. I miss heated seats. Especially now that its cold out in the morning.

I have noticed that when it is under 50* the turbo noises are more noticeable. I really love how all the mechanicals sound in my car. I have taken a few people for rides, and so far everyone loves her. It is going to be interesting what she feels like with an additional 100 horses after she is fully tuned.

I also tore an exhaust mount last night hitting a relatively large dip in the road. Cartboy hangers are going on when I finish the muffler as that is the last part I need to pass inspection.

What I have learned in the 200 miles I have put on my car since getting her running. The STI struts revalved by Feal with RCE blacks are AWESOME. I would recommend this setup to anyone. The car is firm, but it is not bouncy, and I can really pitch her into corners with confidence. rock solid all the way. The manual steering conversion.... LOVE IT. Everything is so direct. The car is really responsive. I will get my Whiteline Roll center kit (Tie rod ends) ordered up, there is a little bump steer that you can feel now that you are basically running a finger over the road. I will see about getting these before I get my alignment.

The Honda Pilot rear wiper works superb. It has even coverage over the entire range and leaves no streaks on the back window when used. I know, it is a small thing, but damn it makes a difference.

I will get the exhaust squared away hopefully today and I plan on setting up my Gopro and doing some short clips on xmas day. Maybe if it is slow at work today, I will get the GT side skirts installed and finish the last few interior bits, mostly the Oh Sh1t handles and the right rear door are all thats left inside the car. I might even get off my ass and install my amp and speakers into the car again. we shall see. More fun to come!

Well I installed the Greddy EBC last night before I left work, put the rest of the trim panels in the car, and disconnected the recirc fitting on the BOV. I drove the car about 40 miles last night, turned the boost up to 10psi. The VF once it spools comes on super fast and first gear is almost useless as I hit the rev limiter almost instantly. I think my exedy stage 1 might not be up to the task and will have to plan on a clutch upgrade in the not too distant future.

The HKS sounds super sweet with the recirc fitting with the VTA, not super loud or over the top. But I can confirm that she wants to stall coming to a stop. I will be changing her back to recirc today. It was just something fun to play with as I already know there would be no performance gain and its only for sound. That is why I spent so much time on the turbo inlet setting it up for recirc to do it the right way. Now if i decide to tune ONLY speed density, I could make it work, but that is just far too much hassle and quite frankly, not worth the work for some extra turbo noises.

I hope to get some quality time tuning tomorrow night. I hooked up the coolant sensor when I hardwired the unit so I should be able to use the auto tune to get me close. I noticed the car surges under full throttle in 3rd gear. AFRS were pretty solid at 10.8-11.2, I think that still may be a bit rich for 10psi. I will have a passenger look at the scanner under pulls to see what my timing is doing, I dont hear/feel any knock at all, and timing has been pulled pretty heavily through the upper band while I tune for safety.

I also need to tweak the i/j map a bit as the ecu is trying too hard to keep stoich at certain revs and looking at the fuel trims it has to pull too much fuel to zero out. All in all, I think I have a hell of a good start on things and hope to learn a lot getting the car dialed in. I am very pleased with how things are running for my first motor build.

I also think that 6psi is more then sufficient for daily driving around town. But I cant wait to see what 18psi feels like passing on the freeway. :P

oh boy, Glad you are okay!

I am kind of surprised that the passenger side quarter glass didnt break, it looks like that whole side has a decent bend in it..

01-12-2015, 04:22 PM
yeah, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on the quarter glass, it is bowed out a good inch. The right rear door is pinned shut as well. Floor and right frame rails is toast.

I located a 99 Limited with lunched motor local for a decent price. I am working on looking at it tonight, then after I settle with insurance, swap everything over. I really love the dual moon roofs. I just really wish they made that trim with a 5 speed. And the wiring on the 99's are a nightmare, so I will basically gut the entire car, and transfer my already modded harness over. Swapping all of the 99 shit into Ruby. I have a parts car that has most everything I need to fix this one. Depending on what I am able to swing through insurance, I may put the Rt 3/4 rear in and get her back running as a slushbox 2.5 NA. It will be a few days before I am able to do anything though.

I am not mortally wounded, but he hit me hard enough to do some damage. My neck and back are not happy. Was hard enough to bend the seat back. Thankfully, urgent care hooked me up with the fun stuff. Chiro is scheduled for tomorrow now that the swelling has gone down.

Yeah, not giving up now. I have been kicking around a few CL ads for Impreza 2 doors... But I really love the leggy wagons. With the WRX seats they are just a really comfortable car that is easy to drive long distances.

I located a RHD postal shell in Denver, and a 99 Dual moon roof Limited with a blown motor locally. I may just end up with both and have a RHD dual moon roof car.

Looks like Courtney my white 97 outback will be getting fixed next week so I have a car again. I just need to replace the broken Clutch release fork in her.

I also have my green machine parts car, so if push came to shove, that would be a super simple swap, it only sucks because it is an L model and I hate the flat roof cars. They dont look right. The limited I found looks super clean, and I am trying to go look at it after work tonight to hopefully work out a deal with the guy. I will keep everyone posted!

Ok good news bad news. I was able to look at the 99 LTD on saturday. Bad news, it is not nearly as clean as it was made out to be. Left rear door shell is damaged, left quarter has some pretty bad damage at the dog leg, and it has dings and dents all over it. Plus the leather is in pretty rough shape.

Good news... I bought it for $600.00 I am picking it up on Thursday. I will start by giving it a deep cleaning top to bottom to see just what I have to work with.

Even better news, Dad ended up buying a 99 30th anniversary L model with moon roof/5speed that was hit in the right front. He wants to convert his 91 to a 5speed. SO, game plan as it is....

Trans and rear end out of dads car goes into his 91LS

Going to completely gut both 99's. I will take the 5speed harness out of the green car and put it into the black car.... the Green car will get the auto keep its original 2.2 and get the outback suspension.

I will transfer everything mechanical from my car into the black 99, and take all my good body panels and swap them over. My green machine parts car is the same color as the wrecked car dad bought. so I am taking my hood, fender, bumper, rad support yadda yadda and we are building a 30th anniversary 99 auto with leather and auto.. basically making a limited model. sell that car, and split the profits.

I spent the morning pulling the bumper, fenders hood, radiator and evac'd the a/c system. Car is ready to go on the frame rack to get pulled. Once she is pulled the parts swapping will begin!

So now the list of legacy ownership is as follows:

98 Outback Ruby (to be gutted)
97 Outback Courtney (up and running) I fixed the throwout fork last week.
99 Outback Limited (soon to be the boost wagon)
98 L wagon Green Machine (Giving up her life to safe another)
99 L wagon (project flip for cash)
91 LS wagon Pearl (dads daily driver going 5 speed)

hmm.. 6 legacy wagons.. I may have an addiction.

You went with the fiberglass fill on yours, I actually cut parts from the grill center and made plastic fillers for the holes I made. I am plastic welding in the parts a little bit at a time. I just screw around with it a bit at work when it is slow. I dont really like any of the aftermarket grills for our cars. The rfrb grill is the closest to what I like, but almost all grills I find are for the pre face lift small opening. I like doing the work on my car as it gives me a stress outlet most of the time. I will admit, sometimes it causes stress, but mostly not.

I nearly bought a postal wagon this week as well, but decided against it last minute. I really loved my RHD civic, but I just dont want to have to deal with a roof swap right now. I miss driving my car! lol.

I am hoping to get my settlement before I start the heavy part of the swap, Then I will be able to get my WRX rear arms, new bushings for all the suspension, whiteline roll center kit, and some chassis underbracing. I will also start fabbing up the spare tire sub box and amp rack. Still have lots of work ahead of me.

Game plan is to completely strip the car down to the shell. I will be swapping all my suspension, wiring, driveline, everything out of Ruby.

I will most likely just polish up the outside for now and not worry about the body work right away. I think I will take all the extremely clean body panels off Ruby and transfer them over to the white car. The body on the white car is pretty rough, both front fenders are wasted, the right side doors have moderate damage and I have already replaced the tail gate.

The motor carnage looks pretty impressive. The timing belt grenaded and actually took out the passenger side intake sprocket. So I am sure all the valves are pretty mangled.

My dad and myself purchased a 99 30th anniversary L model hit in the right front 2 weeks ago. I have all the body parts in the correct color from Green machine. Going to be repairing the other car, Pulling the 5 speed and rear diff out and putting them in his 91.

I think I will have like a months worth of weekends doing this crap. lol. Oh well. Enjoy the photos, I post anything I hear about the insurance settlement on this one, and will be making a new build thread once I get R2.5t cleaned up.

Yeah, when this one popped up on CL a month ago, it was listed at 2k with blown motor. But it was also listed as immaculate. I passed up a 97 RHD postal wagon in favor of the moon roofs. I have always loved the look of the duals on the Limited. So after looking at the car with the damages to the rear door, quarter, paint checking, leather breaking down on the headrests, I was able to talk her down to $600.00. I think I could have snaked it for $500, but being that it is a 99, I am sure I can recoup some of that selling the Phase 2 block.

I did my first mod yesterday, I peeled the upper pinstripe off because it looks better without. Unfortunately between moving, my daughters bday, changing jobs and finishing up stuff at my current work, I have not had much time to work on it. I hope to spend all of next weekend to start tearing into her.

Well quick update. Update is nothing to really update right now. I was involved in a motorcycle accident in the end of March, Spent 2 weeks in a coma and have no memory of the week after that. Broken heel, blown out ankle, fractured rib, broken skull, and had a stroke just to throw something fun in the mix. Today is my first day back at work. I have lost really no motor function, speech, and I am no more retarded then I was BEFORE the accident. I need to use a walker for the next 2 months before I can put any weight on my heel and really start the physical therapy of getting my leg muscles back.

I am having one of my bodymen at the shop pull Ruby. Going to get the quarter, floor and rear rail dimensionally correct, Make the right rear door shut and also make the replamement hatch shut. Once that is done I will get the needed rear clip cut off my parts car and get it trimmed out and prepped for the nightmare of replacing the right rear 1/4 section of the car. But atleast I will have a bumper again, doors that shut and water protection while I finish getting the engine dialed in and start stock piling parts that I need for the doner car.

And now that we have oficially decided that 105* is the LOW in Phoenix, and my extremely limited use of my right leg, I will plan on a Fall car gutting party to get all the drivetrain swapped from one car to the other. I will be fixing Ruby and putting a mild build 2.5 back in her since my brother inlaw really wants a legacy.

The Trauma ICU never gave up on me and because of that I am still here. I intend to do the same for the single best car I have ever owned, and I have already saved 3 other Leggy wagons from the end of their line. Rock on people. Hope to get some photos soon of the car pulled and atleast being the correct lenght again.

Yeah, was an experience to say the least. Wish my leg wasn't on the gimp and I was able to work on my car. But, it has been hovering around the 110* mark here in Phoenix, so I am not overly concerned. Besides, my sisters car has the Handicapped plates which I am driving and lets me park in the close spots!

Just like everything else, this will pass and I will be in a great position to get things rolling.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

So I should have the body pulled on my car next week. Once I can get the rear door and the hatch to close and bolt up my spare rear bumper, I am going to get back to getting my tuning and emissions done. I will work on getting my replacement she'll stripped down and cleaned and attempt to do the full driveline and harness swap in a weekend. Need to get my right ankle back to use the brakes!

Ok, I had this all typed out Monday night. But again the forum absolutely HATES my Ipad. Not that I can blame it, there are lots of times I hate my Ipad as well and consider getting an Android Tablet. Sooooo Update:

My sister and her Hubby have been driving my 97 Outback for the last 2 months, and I have been driving their 01 Impala. This has been 2 fold. My 97 is a 5 speed, and with the ankle, I just couldnt use my right foot to brake. Sisters car is an Auto. Secondly, the Impala has Handicapped plates. Definately a big help in my gimpified situation.

Well last week, the Leggy started running bad. Apparently my Brother inlaw was cruising along the freeway at 65 and it just shuddered and lost power. I took a look at it and it acts like it is only running on 3 cyl.

Pulled injector plugs while it was running, appeared to be Cyl 1 not firing fully.

Threw in a new plug and swapped in a different injector. No change.
Verified was getting spark to the hole.
Replaced coil just to be safe. No change.

Told my Brother inlaw to get a fuel filter for her and I will bring over a spare ignitor, and based on some forum scouring, I will change out the main relay. So currently, my car is dead.

Monday night, I am getting ready to leave their house..... And the Gimpala decides it wont start. No dome lights, no radio power just a blinking security light on the dash. Appears this gem of a car has a common issue with this. So their car is dead.

Thankfully, I was able to borrow a car. An 01 Mitsu Eclips 5 speed. With a horribly adjusted clutch.

Get a call from my bodyman yesterday, wanting to know the trick to starting my car.... Ummmmmm, dont let it sit for 4 months without starting it.. Battery is stone dead. I have had intermittent issues since doing the 5 speed swap where on occasion, turning the ignition, you can hear the plunger move, but the starter doesnt spin. A few key cycles generally gets it going. Well, when I did the turbo motor, I threw in a spare KNOWN WORKING starter. Well apparently that is not the issue. Further research again shows the common weak link the main relay. With any luck Ruby will be pulled this week and I can get back into driving my car. I have been driving the 5 speed for the last few days and have no worries or doubts about managing the brakes with my right foot.

Lets hope this weekend I will be putting in some time cleaning my girl up, and getting her back on the road. I will keep everyone posted!

Little bit if progress. The Major pulls to the rear have been done, Rear door shuts now and has a good gap, Rail and floor are mostly straight but still getting replaced down the road. The upper body pulls will happen today to get a large part of the quarter panel straightened out and make the fuel door shut and open like it should.

With any luck, this weekend will be me installing the rear lights and axle back exhaust and checking all the air pressure in the tires so she can go for a spin and get some fuel!. I think the first tank will be a 50/50 mix of E85 and 91 since we have crap premium in Arizona. But I should be able to drive my girl again. I will get all the bugs worked out of the engine and tune. Once the weather drops back down into the manageable level, I will do the shell swap to my new dual moon roof Outback. Ruby will be going back to a slushbox and N/A 2.5 for the time being. I will get the quarter, floor and rail replaced with parts from my parts car and make her whole again.

Definately long over due for this!

She dies coming to a stop. Turns over but won't fire.. Tach doesn't move. Looks like cam sensor. Grab some spare parts... Sleep after I over did it. Plugged in the scanner, won't power up. Went through all the fuses, none blown. Jumper power from the fuse panel to the ecu. Fires right up, runs for 5 seconds and my jumper wire goes into complete meltdown mode.

Now I have to look over all the schematics to see what the wiring does. Hope hope hope it isn't the emanage and is just a pinched wire somewhere. Damnit I need just a little good luck for a change..

It is hard to tell if I am the least luckiest man alive or if I am very Lucky, considering I wasn't severely injured when the guy hit me, I lived through my motorcycle accident and stroke with relatively minor complications... The no fire was a mile from home and is not a blown motor, but a wiring issue or the ecm/emanage committed suicide.

Maybe Ruby doesn't wanna be a 300 horse porn star.. Lol. Oh, and in all the work I did, I managed,to not recharge the a/C or put the tensioner and belt on.... So black car with black interior and lots of windows in Az summer with no air.... Blah

Well I have narrowed it down. It is an INTERMITTENT short on the yellow
/blue wire from the main relay. Of course this powers the ecu, emanage, most engine solenoids, maf, O2 sensors and injectors.. This will be fun. Good thing I have a dvom!

First check will be the tank pressure solenoid in the right quarter..... Right where she was hit.

Have you tried another main relay to see if maybe it's just being a pain. I'd definitely go that route before I started getting into the wiring. Best I remember from doing my merge the yellow/blue is one solid wire from the relay until it splits off a couple times behind the heater core, where it makes its way to the engine compartment ecu and rear wiring of the car.

meepers
08-04-2015, 10:42 AM
Thanks Bratman! That was something I was going to swap out as well due to intermittent starting issues. It is on my list in my brain, just not on paper. I Actually might do the main relay to 2 individual Bosh auto relays just for ease of replacement and diagnosis. I will swap the relay for another, then check for continuity between the wiring and body to see if I have a short. Intermittent electrical sucks to troubleshoot. It was even worse as I thought I had it handled so my car left me walking 2x in one weekend. lol. But I for sure am going to inspect the wiring at the Fuel pressure solenoid at the charcoal canister as the car was stuffed really hard there and I know my culprit wire feeds there as well. I really want to go punch the guy who hit my car.

I am quite pleased that the issue is not my Emanage. Hope to do some trouble shooting tonight after my MRI and picking up some batteries as my DVOM got switched on being stuffed in a bag of tools. Wish me luck!

Nope, This car will end up getting just a TDO4 and getting all the 99 wagons drivetrain. Back to slushbox. All my super fun stuff will make it to the Blue 99 and basically I will need to start over. I have the quarter panel, rear body panel and floor to fix this car, and I will. Most likely will stay my spare in case of emergency ride. Out of 4 Legacy wagons, 3 were bought broken, and when I am done, only one will have given its life so the rest may live. And fortunately, that car is just a standard L model. Ok happy update! A/c is charged and blows 42* at the vent. As I suspected, front 02 sensor heater shorted internally. I disconnected the heater wire from the plug, and will pick up a new Bosch unit on Monday. I reconnected everything else. Currently no cels but the iac is a little slow and she likes to stall with the ac running pulling to a stop light. BUT I noticed that my check valve to the map sensor exploded. That could be the culprit. Picking one up tonight so everything should be working properly again. Hell, I even drove her through the car wash to get the 7 months of dirt off her.

One step closer.

I used a jdm ej20k iac for the elbow, but I had to rotate the connector as it was backwards. Threw an idle low code today. Teething problems with my super hybrid that I made things more difficult because I wanted under manifold turbo inlet. Oh well, lol. Being different is hard work.

Ok, minor update. I cheated the idle by tightening up the cruise control cable a hair. Right now with the ad on she idles about 850... Turn the air off and she drops down to 650. I do NOT want to pull the iac right now. Basically need to disassemble The entire intake mani from the block. This will have to do for the time being.

I will get the O2 sensors replaced this weekend and try to get the girl through emissions next week. I will need to get my cat back welded up and put in this weekend too. Don't think I will pass visual with no muffler lol. I am definitely ordering a dump valve?. I LOVE how she sounds with no muffler... But it would get really old on the drive to work every day.

08-12-2015, 02:39 PM
Over all the girl is running great. Missed the Photo op yesterday on the 666 miles on the new motor for Satans station wagon. I will have 1000k miles on the motor by this weekend, and think I will do the oil change just to check on everything and get the New O2 sensors installed and clean up the vac lines under the hood so I wont get any crap from the DMV when I run through Emissions. I will get most of the trunk interior installed this weekend as well. Holy crap my car has a lot of little squeaks in it now.

I ended up replacing all the bulbs on the rear of the car this week. I had one burnt out Plate lamp. Replaced that Monday night. Last night I had one of the hatch running lights burn out. Replaced that. 15 minutes later, the OPPOSITE side brake lamp burnt out (only good part of not having the interior gate panel on). So I just spent 30 bucks on bulbs and replaced them all.

I forgot just how expensive on gas making cool turbo sounds is. I only got 220 on this last tank of gas, granted that it was 25% corn juice. But I may have spent too much time making people who thought they had fast cars look silly. Dodge Challenger R/T What???? it is funny to see the looks on peoples faces when you are merging on the freeway and they think they are going to cut you off with their fast car because they dont want to be stuck behind a station wagon, and a hard 2nd gear pull shuts them down.

So this weekend I get on getting her cleaned up, mostly reassembled and I will probabally Plastidip the rear hatch black so it matches the rest of the car until I can weld up the emblem holes and get the couple of dents fixed.

Tires are going to be on the list fairly quickly along with the alignment. I will get the new wagon moved over to the house so I can start breaking her down for the swaparoo as soon as the weather cooperates more. I am a bit anxious to get the motor out of her and stripped down to see just how bad the carnage is to the passenger side head. I would assume that all the valves are toast. I am going to do some port work, and see about getting the STI sodium filled exhaust valves for her. I will also be looking for a 255/257 rotating assembly to build the 99 bottom end to the same specs that I have with the current 255 bottom end. If I have the other motor ready to go, I will have a lot more confidence in driving her. I will also look for a good deal on a set of pistons for when the ringlands decide to commit suicide, and will build her right away upon event horizon.

That is enough rambling from me for now. Back to work! Everyone have a great day.

Well, Yesterday was my last turbo fun drive for a while. I pulled Ruby's heart out and stuck it in the blue shell this weekend. I will start a build thread on her when I have her running, hopefully tonight. So as of right now, Ruby is motorless and is about to get nearly completely stripped. New plan is, she is getting fully caged and beefed up, and this is going to be my rally/dirt queen. Basically everything is getting pulled off her and she will be just a shell for a while.

The motor went into Blue yesterday, and it looks like for the near future I will be basically driving a 99 Limited all stock except for the 255 bottom end/sti head gaskets. Going back to a slow auto is going to be a challenge for me. Heck, I am not even pulling the suspension for a while and will even drive her stock height. The only plans that will get done extremely fast are window tint, and putting my 07 Rex wheels with 205/50r17 all seasons on her. I need to get a new set of tires before I put those on, because the tires on Blue have less then 3k miles on them. I found the ppw in the glove box and they even have road hazard.

The plan for Blue is to get the intake manifold attached tonight, install radiator, stock airbox, and do the coolant and oil. The Tranny fluid will get changed along with the rear diff fluid in a few weeks. I really want to find out what mechanical gremlins she has before doing too much else. Then I get the fun task of detailing her so she is atleast clean. I did however find 3 options I didnt know the car had. Factory under seat subwoofer, Rear pillar tweeters by the hatch, and a cup holder for rear passengers on the back of the center console. I will give her a good cleaning, condition the leather, install my Infinity auto dim mirror, and my STI steering wheel and change the locks out of Ruby to keep my STI key. lol. I will also transfer my alarm out so I have keyless entry and can install my stereo without a little less worry.

Will start my new build thread shortly and also be keeping this updated when I start the tubing. I will also be fabbing up some trick stuff that I will possibly be making a few extras of to help out the community. Time to get back to the day job.

Well Suppose I will throw and update in on Ruby's status.

Current condition:

Heartless, The motor has been transferred in all its non turbo glory into Blue. I have to say I am impressed with the hybrids non boost power, I think it was stronger then Ruby's stock mill.
Going to pick up material this week to make pin stands for the girl and set the rocker panels up for pin stands.
This week I am basically going to completely gut the interior, jdm parts and the black out tails for Blue.

Now for the fun update..... I am planning out my Cage. She is getting a full cage, Looking up FIA's rules for Chromoly vs DOM tubing, because 1.75" tubing for the main hoop and a pillars is big.

Ruby is getting converted into a full on rally car. I am still working out if she will be Heavy or Light open (turbo vs Na)

Regardless, she will be in the open class, as I have big plans for the build that meet no stock classes.

Designing and building full tubular front and rear xmembers, front lower control arms with adjustable caster, and fully adjustable rear arms and links. The front xmember will be designed to work with both NA and WRX Turbo exhausts, utilize both turbo or NA sway bars, and be set up with some other Ideas that I have that I hope the forum will love, so I can cover multiple scenarios. Light bars and bumpers are also in design phase right now.

I also have ideas that I will be prototyping for the motor mounts, pitch stop, and skid plates.

Looks like Ruby will be getting ghetto wide bodied, that way I can fit good rubber under her and still meet the rule book.

When all is said and done, I think she will be about stock outback height again, with many handling related custom parts. I have also contacted 2 local spring manufactures, and am working some details for custom wound OE fitment spings.

I Traded Courtney (white 97 OB) to my brother in law for my 99 Ranger back. The Ranger power plant will go from 3.0l of Taurus station wagon crap to 5.0l of Mustang fun, A 700r4 is being built to handle the duty it will be assigned, and she will basically be a mini trophy truck. doing a 4-6" over long travel front end with coil overs, rear will be a 4/5 link setup, and the truck is getting back halved with a full on race ready cage. This truck will have the main goal of being a bad ass desert monster, with the added responsibility of towing Ruby to the Rally events for the south west region, and being our prerunner.

Ruby will spend the rest of her life being my dirty whore, wile Blue will get the job of being the tarmac queen and get entered in some scca solo events to sharpen me up in the off season of dirt.

In addition, my brother in law and myself are going to convert the remaining parts of the green machine into a legacy wagon trailer. She is going to be setup for camping basically, able to sleep two, carry gear, and match our cars in the process.

This year may have been most trying until now, But it has put me into the position of being able to start a business, build some bad ass subies, and leaves next year looking like a winner so far. I will keep everyone updated on the business aspect once I have some things worked out.

Blue will be my 300hp daily driver with serious handling upgrades, while keeping the Adult car feel. Lots to look forward too.
