I have a 98 legacy outback limited 2.5L
The problem I am experiencing is this ... About I had an alternator problem, and I changed the alternator and everything was good for a little while. Then the battery and break light started coming off and on while I was driving, it has been doing this for a few months now, so far never leaving me stranded (Fingers crossed)

I have changed the belt, cleaned contacts to the battery , cleaned up the ground.

things I have noticed, when the battery light and break light turn on the voltage goes up to 14.5V , as well the day time running lights turn off. otherwise the voltage is 13.5V. it has happend twice now that the ABS light will also trun on with the others for a few seconds and the voltage goes to 17V..

possibly unrelated the the dash lights flash off and on but this was happening long before any of the problems. They were replaced by Blue Leds

if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them

Output on the alternator is supposed to be a steady 14.4 from what I understand; If its spiking out to 17, it may be a voltage regulator issue..
New alternators aren't always perfect out of the box, maybe take it back to place of purchase for testing?

I went to the parts store today and described my problem and they just said to exchange it.. so I pulled it out in the parking lot. ... so far so good
