I have been meaning to ask. How much a difference do you think the strut tower braces make? I am considering getting a set.

Sorry forgot to reply.

Rather controversial question. A lot of people seem to think these are "bling-bling" items only (in most cases those only interested in bigger "my penis longer than yours" turbos and power gains) and do not really do much, I tend to disagree.

You would feel the difference with some solid bars (not talking about STI Flexi/Genome here) - the front feels more solid and as one piece, the same applies to the rear (becomes really noticeable in wagons when panel squeaking disappears). Supporting mods/overall suspension condition should be considered too I reckon. It's not like you spend $300 on braces and expect to get some massive improvement in handling.

It's exhaust time again, a bit more complex now.

Japanese mild steel headers + 2.5" pipework + 3rd cat delete
2.5" mid section with 400mm AdrenalinR resonator
2.5" stainless Y-section
HKS ES Premium mufflers

Got the headers a while ago, they came on a freshly imported 3.0 and were removed by a dealer, no name and reckon these were made up for someone in Japan. Other alternatives: Raptor headers from Australia or K2Gear from Japan (bloody expensive and nearly impossible to find used). Custom collectors, otherwise stock. Then I managed to find a stainless 2.5" all the way through mid-Y section that needed some modifications on the mufflers' side. And came up with a plan to build my own exhaust...

Sooo... She got dyno tuned today by one of the most knowledgeable tuners around (in the Southern Hemisphere at least ;)) - Matt aka KiDo/Throttlehappy Tuning (https://www.facebook.com/Throttle.Happy.Tuning)

The idea was to have a happy, healthy car with a bit of an oomph.
What I have now: healthy (turned out the car was running lean), stable/usable power across the range - S# is actually user-friendly now, nothing stupid as it comes in stock, no hesitation, tuned for 98 (can safely use 95 if have too), much better fuel economy plus a few other cool things: ECU firmware got upgraded to the latest revision for BL/BP generation; transmission behaves like a DSG - extremely smooth shifts, downshifts with a cool sound (think about VW R32); tweaks to the brake system, something to do with master cylinder and vacuum - much more responsive breaking/less mushy. My totally amateur understanding/explanation of things :D

Re: the car running lean. Matt reckons the Kakimoto chamber was the cause of it, good upgrade though if you're getting your car tuned (finally a knowledgeable opinion, none of these uneducated "I guesstimated" bullcrap you hear on the forums). He also recommended to remove an intake resonator which was promptly done (white plastic container under your air filter box).

Good thing when you tune with KiDo - you can always come back to him and get a re-tune (via e-tune) if you need too(i.e done some other mods), for FREE.

Dyno plot for those, interested in digits:

Still working on the tune - turned out one of the breather hoses was disconnected (intake chamber to block) and that caused a few issues. Not too sure when it happened though before, after or during the dyno run.

What else... Since all the exhaust works were done I just couldn't stand the noise it was producing (nothing bad mind you, just too noisy for my sensitive ears) and chucked the stockies back on. Ugly Betties those are to say the list so I scored myself a set of pretty much brand new Subaru MMAG8 mufflers which have much wider, better looking outlets. Those made the whole thing super quiet, kind of a nana sleeper.
But yeah today I couldn't resist myself and chucked those Prova by FGK mufflers on - I reckon I'll rock them for a few days and will see what happens next.

Shall still snap some pics of that BL/BP STI by Recaro seat my butt been enjoying for a while now, as well as of something from K2 Gear.

Get it if you're planning to e-tune yours (or get one 50/50 with someone local so you can split the costs and share the cable), if you just want to see how healthy your car is and what it does then just get a cheap one off ebay. Have one of those and it works well with FreeSSM and RomRaider, read only.

PS: not sure if there is any difference between USDM and JDM OBD protocols.

Oil/filter changed today: 15208AA031 + Castrol Edge 5w30.

OZ's came on some hideous 235/45 Goodride tyres - bloody balloons (comfy at 45 profile though and very quiet compared to S001 Potenza's, also nearly new shouldn't be a problem to flick them) so got that sorted as well. Finally some use for my 99% new RE002 Potenza's that'd been in storage since I got the Prodrives. Much better look with the correct size/profile. Shall do some proper shots soon(ish).

OZ's specs:
Superturismo GT-Evo
18x7.5 ET48
Clear Brembos easily (more even clearance than Prodrive's)
GT-Evo is a JDM only model, Flow Formed (standard GT model is not)

Went back to stock headers and mid section for a number of reasons, the main one being that I am now not only a whippet but a baby taxi as well.

Third cat was removed from the stock headers to open things up a bit, but not too much - all this fiddling with the exhaust made me to realise how important the back pressure is for the system and what lack of it does to a NA car. Up until recently square tip Liberals were my favorites (based on sound/back pressure balance), then I came across some rather bulky looking mufflers that tuned out to be Wangan and that was exactly what I was looking for for a while - some decently sized back boxes that will provide me with a nice deep sound and a good amount of back pressure, not to mention absolutely no drone at cruising speeds.

Still keeping all the other mufflers I have including wagon specific Provas, I am getting to that point when I will probably have to upgrade to a wagon - sedan boot is juuust big enough for all the baby stuff, but we'll see how we go anyway. In fact, I took a spec.B GT for a test drive and nearly bought that but something just stopped me at the last moment and while I was reconsidering someone else placed a deposit on that, another option was a NZDM 3.0 spec.B - these come fully spec'd with black leather, big sunroof, all electrics, headlight washers etc etc and once again I was just too slow. I reckon I am probably not quite ready to part with the car yet.

Not much else happened to the car, standard oil/filter/air filter service etc. Oh and also had to replace a steering rack boot.

I know that backpressure is supposed to be a calculated thing for an NA car, and maybe it's not as big an issue for 4th gens, but I just slapped a thirdhand muffler onto my BK and found about 250 extra RPM on the low end that I just couldn't use before. I'm pretty sure my muffler was designed for a WRX or STi fitment. It was then modified to fit an Outback Sport, then further modded for my BK. By all rights, it should suck.

Scored a set of brand new, still sealed in plastic mats. Plus a proper sedan carpet mat for the boot (have been using a wagon version, fits Ok-ish in there).

They come with ball joints and solid rubber bushings. A friend of mine got them for his GT then his transmission decided it wanted to explode.

Definitely check yours, well known weak spot. Are your LCAs not alloy ones? Mine are all aluminium arms front and rear.
On a side note, does USDM 3.0R LTD have auto-leveling headlights?

After driving for a while today I can say that the bushes are definitely firmer, the front end feels tighter especially in corners.

Which is stupid. The 3rd gens H6s had bigger rear brake (which is what I plan on putting on my car). My Outback is soo unbalanced under braking. Extra weight up front should have been balance out with something better in the rear. My mother identical (but 2.5i) Outback Sedan can out corner my car with ease.

Beast is still on his factory fitted H1/H3 combo, and my 95 250T still had 3 original bulbs in it when I uograded to some nice "plus 120's", because they were quite yellow and only putting out like an H4. Not bad after 21years/230,000k's. H4's are another story, they are crap. Projectors or bust!

My BC has a similar setup, 260mm Front 266mm rear... It's hilarious when trail braking, really gets the arse to come around, quite un nerving! Subaru's done this to a lot of cars from factory, BG5A TS-R's had 260mm front rotors, and 266mm rears factory for example!

Don't forget even with larger rear rotors, bias is still to the front, just not as much as we might desire though

Each to their own I guess. One wants a bulb to last for 20 years, another one wants a better performance. Not that I had to replace anything due to a fault and doubt I will. BH5 had stock bulbs in it, so did BLE when I upgraded the bulbs for Osrams.

A few things happened today:

K2Gear Meister Spec-Neo Dual mid section is installed. I reckon now I'm done with the exhaust (apart from an occasional mufflers swap when I get bored), K2Gear was my ultimate goal: 3.0 specific mid section straight bolt-on without any need for modifications, modest pipe diameters, good oval resonator, good sound, awesome look :)

Finally got a chance to wash and polish/wax her after all the rain we'd had lately.
Took some photos of the car and the things I need to sell (Kakimoto Regu.06&R mufflers with Ti tips, Trust mufflers, Valenty full LED tail lights etc)

Rear suspension upgrades:
STI Pillowball Rear Lateral Arms ST2029021000

Two questions for you on these. I know somewhere you said this is the right part number for the type d-f with self leveling headlights. USDM cars didn't get the self leveling headlights, so I was wondering if the parts listed for the type a-c would work on our d-f cars? The reason I ask is I found a set with aluminium front lower control arms (which was also left off USDM 3.0Rs) for about $310 USD including shipping.

Second, how much a difference do you think these make?

I have another question for you good sir. When the stock air box at the top of the throttle body cracked on your car did you get any noticeable stumbling or anything? If I am cruising at low rpm and give it a little gas the car seems to stumble at first. Its mostly noticeable in Intelligent and gets better in Sport and S#. I have no CEL yet. I really need to take the engine cover off and look.

Sorry took me a while. The arms are the same between pre-facelift and facelift, the only difference is that one of the facelift arms has a mounting point for a headlight leveler. The same applies to the front LCA.

Hard to say how much difference they made as they were installed with the Cusco bits. At the very least the bushes were much younger, than factory 100k km ones they replaced.

Heard/read the same info somewhere, they do look very similar.

Growing family demanded something bigger (or it was just an excuse :D). Still have both but the 3.0R is 90% back to stock, just need to remove a few things. Spent whole Sunday taking suspension mods and brakes out and replacing with stock parts.
