I love it! Very subtle when at city/motorway cruising speeds (haven't heard any complaints from the wife, do not think she even noticed :lol: ), come alive when you push a bit harder, go nuts when you floor the pedal. I had Ganadors on the car for a few days and those were a bit raspy and didn't look as nice, were much lighter being Ti though.

So much different (obviously) from BH5 TT. I know I said it before, but that was comparing Fujitsubo and Genome, now I can compare all three. HKS quality is superb, I really like how the mufflers sit and overall look/details. Similar quality to FGK, much more superior than Genomes, glad I didn't buy those.

Got some HKS coilovers and a Momo Race steering wheel. These came in a parts package I bought. I want to keep the car all legal and don't want to deal with the certification process, plus I am not sure if I want the car to be any lower - the front lip been scraping some steep driveways already.

That's a terrible accident, whatever shall you do!

I do like the class you seem to bring to your cars, in a country (well, world) full of rice, it's a breath of fresh air to see the little stylish subtle subaru body kit parts and nice sensible wheels etc. Slick.

I gotta ask, how do you intend to run that momo? They never released a non airbag 4th gen afaik, so how are you going to deal with the clockwheel/horn issue? and then there's the hoops you need to jump though like a show pony to legalise it...

Thank you for the kind words sir! That's exactly what I'm trying to do - to keep my car nice and "clean", with some tasteful (and useful), in my opinion obviously, mods installed.

The Momo is not going in - the fitment is not an issue at all, legality and lack of the airbag - yes (and I'm keeping my cars all legal). It came from exactly the same car freshly imported from Japan, already with a boss kit, connectors/harnesses and everything to disable the airbag light. It even came with a small set of buttons to replicate UP, DOWN and "i" buttons of a stock wheel (someone must've spent a fair bit on it).
The same applies to the suspension - don't want to deal with the cert process.

How much do the braces go for in the US? By the time we ship it to you it'll probably be the same :lol:

The only thing I don't like about 4th gen is a lack of nice aftermarket bits (new or used) readily available in NZ. Even if you find something in most cases it'll be grossly overpriced, 3rd gen was a bit easier/cheaper :smt012

Changed oil/filter today with a genuine Subaru filter and Castrol Edge 5W-30. Then I thought why not and did the following:

Was my first ever bumper removal, went smooth as and if not the rain would've been done pretty quickly (should've really done it in a garage but it was nice and sunny when I did the oil change - NZ weather at its best). Touched up a few rusty spots on the towbar while the bumper cover was off.

Really like the new look, much more "sportier" and subtle, not sure if I'd colour match the covers - like the contrast (plan B: get another set of outer covers and colour match them :cool: ).

I reckon 17s look too small on these cars. I love the mufflers, the way they sound and even more the way they look. Have seen a few sedan's with big bores and most of them looked hideous - either tips are protruding too far (even though they're sedan specific length) or the whole set up just sits too low (old man's balls I call it :D).

Probably another fast JDM car the US market didn't get.

They have a stupid intercooler, I don't know if they were trying to copy the Subaru look or what, but with the East-west 3S-GTE, the intercooler somehow ends up sitting in front, and slightly above the rocker cover, and above the exhaust manifold. Heat soak is silly bad. But they have a big turbo, lol.

Oh lol, they have another problem too, the exhaust goes right next to the drivers inner CV, they cook the CV grease right up and turn it to oil, which kills the CV. They are a right twat to find in NZ too, usually genuine only. Other than that, 4wd, go pretty well, will give a BH twin turb a run for its money if the drivers caught off guard!

I bought the car completely stock, so yes it was silly me putting it there. TBH I haven't noticed anything - gains or losses, not even any cool induction noise (3.0 is pretty noisy on its own as you'd know). It came in a bunch of parts and was literally free. Looks nice though, I'll just leave it there for now. :wink:

3.0 is a perfect dad's car, been asked a few times if it's my dad's car :lol: :lol: - not even a cent of my parent's money in it (or banks), I have to admit I do look younger than I am :cool:

Slamming the car on some rotas/rays would probably eliminate that question...

Do you notice a difference with them? I have read that the 4th gen chassis is stiff enough that struts bars don't make a big difference. I had a rear strut bar on my 2nd gen wagon. That made the back of the car feel stiffer.

I heard the same story re: 3rd gen rear brace "It's stiff enough, don't need it, waste of money" - complete and utterly BS. Putting one in made some notable difference in handling and eliminated a few squeaks at the back.

Hard to say about 3.0's front in particular as I installed both front and rear braces at the same time. The car is definitely stiffer. Waiting for partsouq to become alive (they got hacked) and then I'll be getting a Tribeca swaybar.

Some of the best handling mods I have done are bracing! Only one I didn't really notice was my front carbon brace, but that's pretty much because they are known to not be stiff, and sure enough, if you grab it and shake on it with it installed, you can flex it quite a bit! I think the issue is that it's 3 bits of carbon glued together, and not a solid mass. But that's fine, that brace is for show, the brace doing all the work is the underbody K-brace, and fuck me what an amazing difference it makes!

One of the great things about newer subies is their stiffness, but I should think one can still stiffen them up, they won't be nearly as stiff as a car with a roll cage, and some are more than 10 years old now!

I have some doubts re: carbon, hence the trial period. I wonder if it's actualy a full on carbon or just some alloy wrapped in carbon. Need to do some research on that. Also want to do a trial of the flexi one. For now I'm not that convinced :smt017 It's just flexing all over the place :lol:

PS: just got home from a nice windy run out west (you'd probably know what I'm talking about Reuben) and the carbon behaved pretty well. Was considering an underbody Cusco too, not that pricey after all.

I'm more of a handling person than "gimme more horseys/kW" type. Plenty of horseys to get enough demerit points to become a ped for 3 months :roll:

That little black box does wonders! It's like enhanced SI-drive - instant throttle response (I mainly use three Sport modes) even in sluggish "I" (making it perfect around town). "S#" + Blitz set in Sport is insane (perfect for on-ramp take offs :smt005 ). It's more likely a temporary measure as I'm thinking of doing a proper tune one day.

Bought a grille unseen, turned out it is a part number J1017AG001 and won't fit (it does fit if you're not picky but there's a small gap at the bottom). Kind of expected it so not that upset and I'm sure it'll sell easily. The grille came in a Syms box with some instructions and fitting hardware, then I found this little packet inside:

Hah, that's neat. I have my plates held on with 10mm bolts instead, I got fed up with how the normal Phillips ones always round off. And I figure any would-be thieves are less likely to have a 10mm socket than a screw driver!

I wonder how many plates are actually being stolen in Aotearoa, 0.00001% a year or something :lol:

First up is J1017AG001: plastic, metal mesh, logo and central reinforcement piece can be removed completely leaving just the mesh if you're after a stealth look and OEM quality. Too bad it is a pre-face grille and a doesn't fit perfectly.

I had a spare set of 18" 3.0R specB wheels for sale that not surprisingly sold yesterday. The buyer also happened to own a pre-face 3.0 and just like me managed to collect a few bits - grilles were the most interesting part for me. Met with him today to drop the wheels off and he brought two grilles in: one OEM and another one crappy quality carbon like mesh. I knew exactly what the OEM grille was and after a short but very successful (for myself :lol: ) negotiation I was on my way home with the new grille in the boot.

I really like the 2nd one, J1017AG080. I am curious. Does the grill on yours screw into the bumper cover? On the post-facelift USDM models it does in addition to the clips on the top. This makes a complete pain in the ass to change the grill.

No nothing like that, the whole swap process takes less than 5 minutes. There's one clip on each headlight side and 4 clip-on thingies on the middle/radiator bar. The bottom just slides into slots.

Pre-face one got two holes on each side, only the bottom ones will line up - can see it in photos.

I'm actually thinking the opposite - but that's probably more about personal preferences or a desired look one would aim for. A few "recessed" Corazon/ZS grilles on CS and I wouldn't say I like them that much but they do suit those cars, i.e more sportier look.

I don't think they even did that type of grilles for the facelift, only the "flush" type or aftermarket options like Corazon or Zerosport.

Was thinking about running the preface grill for a while, the main problem is not even the gap (which is not that visible after all unless you're a subaru nut and know what to look for) but the fact that the bottom part is not secured at all and will require some modifications to get it done properly.

The car looks great! Probably my favorite 4th gen on the site.

This time it's a Cusco alloy brace with a brake master cylinder stopper :cool: I'm fairly certain this one is staying and the rest is going.

So I have 4 spare braces, a number of 2din stereo conversion kits (pre-face/facelift, dual/single climate), a spare set of 95% new HKS ES Premium mufflers :lol: and probably a few other bits a pieces I keep forgetting about (like an STI Genome muffler for GDA/GDB Impreza).

Ohh... nearly forgot... I finally managed to find a set of Whispbar Proracks and put them on today - just in time for some end of year travels with a roofbox. No picsies of those as the car is shamefully dirty, too much rain lately :oops:

Just went under, the guards are held on a few clips and double-sided tape. Cut through the tape in needed spots. Not the most perfect fit but still ok and not that noticeable unless you know what to look for. Put some foamy tape over created gaps to stop any leaks.

Scored a Kakimoto Full Mega N1 exhaust system - mufflers and one piece mid+Y pipes (3" to 2.5" or 2.25" I believe). Not so keen on the mufflers even though they're super light (seriously the whole system is incredibly light!). Put the mid+Y section on and gosh it's bloody loud even with a Coby resonator. Loud from the inside I mean, sounds super-duper awesome from the outside. Another problem is that the system is for a BL5 and the midpipe flange is twisted by about 45 degrees so holes won't line up. Left it on for now.

Trunkfull of pure JDM goodness. Fujitsubo Legalis R type Evolution mufflers and midpipe, HKS Metal Catalyzer downpipe - both 3". Not much use for me, especially the downpipe :D. The muffs and the mid section can be modified to fit mine but I'd rather keep them intact and let someone else with a turbo wagon to enjoy. The white box is for the 3.0 however :o

Put them on the car straight away (I've really mastered the skill of swapping the mufflers ;)) and you know what - I like them, for now at least. Went for a test drive and I like the quads even more - deeper, louder tone than HKS ES Premiums. No actual pics of them on the car - it's a bit dirty after our recent road trip.

I now have my very own roofbox. Perfect timing - got it just before, well actually midway, to the mountains to do some hiking. It is a Prorack Cargo Box 10 - perfect size for a sedan and perfect match with Prorack S bars. Don't have to "steal" my dad's roof box anymore.

Just use some cable tiers and maybe seal it on the underside?.. Would look a bit rough though.

Had a productive Sunday evening:

All up took me about two hours, the whole process was pretty cruisy. Gave the new swaybar a few coats of satin black to make it look a bit more presentable. The car feels so much firmer after both swaybars were installed, am pretty happy with the outcome. Now I just need to get some reinforcement brackets for the rear mounts before I snap them, considering getting a set of Cusco brackets as I just cannot justify paying $100 + shipping to NZ for AVO stuff.

No never had adjustables, too much PITA and $$ with all these certifications and legalities. The ones I posted a while back were a part of a package I bought and just simply on-sold them, as well as the Momo steering wheel (for exactly the same reasons).

Feel a bit dumb... was driving today and noticed some knocking coming from around driver's front wheel. First thought: I stuffed up/didn't tighten/missed something. Took the wheels off tonight and what I found?.. I'd installed both links facing the same direction, i.e passenger's facing outside and driver's inside - you can see it on one of the photos above... what a fool :tard:. All fixed now, appears to be no more knocking.

I like the Zerosports CF grille. I also like the JDM honeycomb grille, which I am not sure if you have. There is a DIY on legacygt.com about making one using the center section of a Ford Crown Vic grille.

BBS crapped themselves, time for some new wheels.

After considering a few options (including an idea of running 18x8 et38 which I'm glad I did not proceed with as it would have required a fair bit of rolling) I settled on a classy set of Prodrive GC-7C in British Gold, pretty much the same specs as the BBS: 18x7.5 ET48 forged and all that, will easily accommodate Brebmos shall I decide to got that route. These came from Japan wrapped in Potenza S001, I'll keep less than a year old set of RE002's as a spare.

Looks amazing. How did the BBS's crap themselves? A set of OZ Prodrive P1s came up for sale near me, but they are 17s and have no center caps and worn tires. Although I am starting to like the look of the 11-14 wrx 17x8 stock wheels with 235/45/17 tires on a 4th gen.

Got a few cracks and one rim started leaking air :(

I was thinking about getting 17s and putting some beefier rubber on them, just wasn't that keen on getting a new set of tyres.

I am so glad I didn't :D I park on a uneven surface at home and one of the rear wheels is usually pushed up - there's not much spare room at all (unless you roll the lips), I actually think if I go a touch lower it'd rub just like it did on BH5 - when loaded/in tight corners/going over bumps. Wagons might have a bit more room at the back though, don't they?

Installed Ohlins fixed perch struts and Apexi springs today/yesterday. Took me three attempts to get the rear done properly - rear struts have adjustable perches, 7 positions around 10mm apart. So I thought the middle position looked a bit high (should have waited for the struts to settle, lesson learned, time wasted), went 2 down, woke up in a morning and found the car with a massively saggy bottom. Finally, decided to give the fifth position a go. So far it looks like that was a right decision, front and rear gaps are pretty much the same.

The struts are damper adjustable - 30 settings, adjustment knobs for the front struts are at the bottom, for the rears - on top (wish it was the other way round, would've been so much more user friendly).

Amazing build quality, I am pretty sure the struts are stainless steel, maybe anodized as they're somewhat "tinted".
Most importantly - awesome ride quality, been missing the feel of GT-B with STI struts and springs. I am not saying Bilsteins are bad, just not as good ;)

No picsies yet, sorry.

Oh also, while I was there, got Cusco rear swaybar reinforcement brackets installed.

Decided to put Beatrush Laile rear strut brace instead of Cusco.

Glad no one bought the Beatrush as it's definitely a winner and is there to stay, Cusco will be sold.

Better quality (not saying Cusco is crap, in this particular case Beatrush is better)
Better fitment (lower profile, lower mounting points) - easier install, easier access to the suspension adjustment knobs . Will be completely hidden if installed in a wagon (foamy underfloor will need to be trimmed a bit, sedan is easier).

Haha yea thats me. Only wanted the blacked out top half interior but the guy didn't want to split the listing so ended up with a crapload of stuff i didn't really want. Since i got the car i'd always thought about wrapping the upper pieces but i'd still end up with light coloured visors and clip in pieces. Over paid in reality but its something that i'd never been able to fully get right any other way. And yea brembo's too ;)

I was seriously thinking about Brembos, probably won't see anything like that for sale locally. But then it would've been nearly pointless in case of my NA and more of a bling. There was a $1 reserve tuned by STI sedan not so long ago. Thought about bidding on it and taking all the nice bits until the bidding went over the roof.

Originally I was looking at getting a Zero/Sports (had one in GT-B) or Cusco plate. Z/s looks seriously under-designed, especially for its price. Nearly ordered Cusco but then I discovered Beatrush: 3.0 specific, cheaper and I already knew that their quality is really good.

Not sure when the filter was replaced last time, I knew it was overdue just could not justify paying so much for original Subaru filter. All in all Blitz ended up being cheaper than if I went to buy one from a local stealership, about the same as getting one from Partsouq.

To early to conclude, I've only had the system running for a bit today but there's no smell at all.

Yeah, when I bought my 3.0R I changed the cabin filter. I don't think it had been changed before that. It looked similar to your old one.

I have seen a few of those Beatrush 3.0R radiator cooling plates floating around Ebay, but like I wonder how much they actually work. I am interested to see what you think after you have it on the car for a while.

For a while I was wondering what was that sound I heard every time I turned the ignition on - something like a spinning/reading CD/DVD. Sounded like it was coming from behind the dash, I knew my stereo was empty, thought it was something to do with a HAVC system...

Then it clicked, checked under the driver's seat and sure thing there was a Japanese navigation unit, still connected and running.

I've always had a suspicion that the car had a different stereo set-up, not just stock with the clock and sunglasses pocket above judging by a few non-oem harnesses found behind the dash. Most likely the swap was done when the car arrived to NZ and I am glad this happened, would've a bit of PITA and $$$ involved to replace useless Japanese system with stock parts. Wreckers want an arm and a leg for vents/pocket/clock assembly.

Didn't expect tons of difference but was pleasantly surprised with the outcome ( I know I always say so :D). The butt feels even more solid, I guess the pillowball links made the biggest difference. Set rear struts at 2 and the fronts at 8 (0 being the hardest and 30 the softest).

Front/rear strut braces conversion from Cusco to Beatrush by Laile is now complete.

Front Cusco strut brace with integrated brake cylinder stopper was replaced with a Laile front brace and a standalone Laile brake cylinder stopper (Laile call it Direct Brake System).

Not much performance wise, apart from the BMCS which is clearly better and outperforms Cusco.

In this particular case my OCD wanted a complete set for front a rear, it also wanted a slightly better quality and fitment. And yes, GOLD... it suits the colour of my eyes... I mean Prodrives...

The sale of Cusco will pretty much cover the cost of the swap, I thought about financial side of things too.

Had some fun driving on gravel roads today/yesterday, put a lot of smiles on my face. The suspension works extremely well, Ohlins are just times better than Bilsteins when it comes to "eating" cracks/holes and other road imperfections, not to mention how well it behaves on gravel.

Downside - the car is covered in dust :D

RHD Japan have them (and a few other places in Japan as it seems), the price is rather steep though. And yes you can get them in black as well as in pink, purple, green etc, just might need to wait a bit longer.

Get some if you can, looks so much better and tidier with the covers (imho of course, someone said that there's too much plastic in the engine bay... must've been an Impreza owner), easier too keep the things clean too.

Big day today - it's Brembo day!
I am slowly improving my skills: suspension jobs - tick, ICE - tick, plugs - tick, full brake swap - tick.
Took me a bit of time to do the whole swap, including the lines.

The kit I got includes:

Brembo 4 pot front calipers
Brembo 2 pot rear calipers
Adapters for the rear calipers
Brembo front and rear rotors
170mm insert drums for the rear rotors (don't have to modify anything and can run 190mm drum STI rotors ;))
Dixcel M type pads front/rear

Decided to upgrade to braided brake lines and after a bit of research got myself a 6pc set from Safebrake (Australia) - awesome quality and OEM fitment without any mods required, came with retainers, banjo bolts and copper washers. Most importantly these are LVVTA ok so no issues with warrant of fitness inspections and no certification required (wouldn't say the same about two pot rear adapters though :/)

Brake fluid: Motul 600

I knew Prodrives were Brembo friendly, no suprises there. Cleared the front calipers by a few mills only - looks like they were specifically designed to clear Brembos judging by the inner curves of the spokes, follow the contours of the calipers.

Last bit of the rear suspension puzzle.

A few months back when I was compiling my Cusco orders I pretty much ordered a Cusco 684 492 R lower power brace, pretty much because I went online to double check the numbers/fitment and found a few posts saying that the brace is not 100% perfect for facelift models - two centre points have nothing to bolt on. I know at least some pre-facelift JDM models had a thin brace there from factory with appropriate holes in the space saver well. Nothing like that under my facelift BLE.

So I changed my mind and gave up on that idea. Until someone told about one specific UltraRacing brace, exactly the type that should fit perfectly with only two mounting points: part number UR-RL2-1431. Found a NZ supplier - pretty much half of what I was prepared to pay for Cusco (new vs new). Ordered, recieved next morning, installed a few hours later. To be honest I was a bit sceptical about UR products. Never seen one in person, just heard a few silly things about.

It's the only 4th gen or new(ish) Subaru that I'd buy. I love the motor and the power delivery. My Dad use to have an '09 3.0R that he bought new. I loved everything about that car except for the automatic transmission. I feel like if you punched it off the line that every so often there would be this small delay before the car really took off, even in Sport or Sports sharp modes. I'd get a limited if I were to get one for the Bilsteins, nicer wheels, steering wheel shift "paddles" etc. I'd like to get one someday.

I've been using Castrol oils since my first BG7 (10W-40 Magnatec) - happy with their products and not really planning to change.

They make a compelling argument for the natural gas based oil which is why I tried it out... 2500 miles in and its going well. If I go back to castrol I will go Magnatec.

Boom! Found some info about rear brake rotor inserts I got with my Brembo set-up.

Turned out it's a kit made by a JDM tuning company called T.N Guts (http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~tn-guts/index.html). Available from japanparts for JPY67,962 (https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/15195) (adapters + rotor inserts + bolts).

Dammit, this find certainly made my evening :lol:

I run either Pennzoil or Castrol conventional. I have been thinking about switching to synthetic. My car has 75,000 miles on it now. Would switching cause any more leaks or anything due to the added cleaning ability?

Synthetic is "thinner/smaller molecules" for lack of a better term, that's why people complain about leaks popping up when switching and it also flows a lot better in colder temps. BUt the leak would be cause from a already worn seal.....i would say your fine go for it!

Sorry I am not an expert at all when it comes to oils. Castrol Edge seems to be the most common option over here, but all those "which oil?" debates are endless and one would always insist that their choice is the best. I know mine was run on 5W-30 in Japan, still have all those service stickers attached to the side of the dash. Have also heard that thicker oil is not that great for AVCS.

If only I had enough storage for all the stuff. I sell off things that I don't like/don't suit the car so in reality I only have grilles (x4 incl stock), mufflers (x4 incl stock) and a few other bits and pieces that I am keeping for my car or the bits that are already on the car. The rest is already sold or is listed for sale (just like it happened to an awesome Fujitsubo Legalis exhaust system last week - pity it was for a wagon :().

It's not like I have $$$$ in my bank account or get the parts for free - I source bits, some for my own car, some to on-sell for a profit. That makes the parts that I leave on my own car cheaper, or even "free" in some cases - to keep the wife happy.

Any BL/BP mufflers will be a direct bolt-on, the only difference being the length of the tips (probably doesn't really apply to USDM bumpers since they're much wider anyway).
Massive number of JDM imports make our lives a bit easier, not super easier though - demand for BL/BP parts is still much higher than what's on offer, hence high-ish prices.

There are some aftermarket exhausts in the US market with slip joints. So those don't bolt on. But you are on the other side of the planet and get cooler parts than we do.

The FGK system I just sold had V-bands instead of flanges - bloody quality stuff. On the other hand V-bands limit your ability to play with different mufflers. One of those moments when I wish I had a wagon :/

Another thing that won't be a straight bolt-on (JDM at least) is the turbo midpipe. As i mentioned before it's all the same apart from the engine side flange - it is rotated by about 90 degrees so the holes won's line up. Easy to modify though.

Kakimoto Intake

This thing has always been in my wish list. Controversial and rather expensive even on second hand market.
BPE/BLE designated Kakimoto part number is BIC318, I managed to get BIC327 designed for 2.0/2.5 NA engines.

BIC318 comes as a chamber only + fitting hardware, no intake pipe, that's where BIC327 becomes a bit sweeter as it comes as whole set-up: chamber + stainless intake pipe + fitting hardware. Contrsuction/fitment-wise the differences are very minor and you can certainly fix/live with those. 327 has two extra inlet pipes before the chamber, those need to be blocked with blanking caps. Ended up getting some silicon caps from a hardware store as none could be found in local auto supplies (the ones used on chairs to protect wooden floors from damaging, perfect size :D)

The fitment is nearly spot on, mounting bracket that attaches the bottom of the chamber to the engine block is just a touch shorter so instead of a nut and bolt combo I just used a small hose clamp to keep it in place.

To retain the engine cover, I re-used two metal brackets I'd saved when DVD/Navi unit was removed from under the driver's seat, with a couple of new holes drilled it worked perfectly :)

Performance: no major difference with Samco pipe (i.e still better response than stock). I ordered some DEI Cool Tape to wrap the intake/chamber in order to eliminate heat soak.

Well, they do charge whatever Fedex charges them plus a little extra. If Fedex charges more to ship to New Zealand than the United States from Japan, then that would be the source of the problem. It may be worth asking them if they would post something via Japan Post instead.. that is if the item will fit within the size restrictions of that method. Or possibly DHL?

In one instance I knew exact weight of something I wanted, I also knew how much EMS (the cheapest option to send to NZ) will charge me for that weight. Even with a little extra added on top (don't mind that at all) Croober's quote was 2.5 times more expensive. They didn't have any explanation for that, don't like it - don't buy it!

I paid ¥27,052 in shipping for a set of 4 17" wheels shipped to me here in the US from Kanagawa. It was via Fedex International Economy and was two 22kg packages. My buying proxy will not handle such large/heavy items as he deals exclusively with Japan Post, so that is not at all an option for me. I was completely shocked by the incredibly low price for Fedex shipping of such a heavy item, but they seem to have some sort of arrangement with Fedex for them.

Are you certain that price was for EMS? That sounds more like a Fedex price to me.
