In Sept 2014 I bought my 3rd Subaru, a base 2001 Outback 5MT. It was rough on the exterior as the previous owner did not have very good spatial skills and didn't believe in washing it, but it was at least taken to a mechanic regularly.
It had 176k miles on it when I got it, but the short block and transmission had both been replaced about 3 years ago and only had ~30,000 miles on it.
Here's a current picture (May 2016):

Here's a photo from a few days after we brought it home (Sept 2014):

I already have two other project Subarus, an 08 FXT and an 02 OBS (see signature for those threads) so I'm, going to take it easy on this one, hopefully. The current plan is to bring it up to the Limited trim level and maybe do a few more items, I hope I can keep the mod-bug at bay.

EJ251 vs EJ252 Differences
Well, my Outback is an EJ252 and my Impreza is an EJ251, so as I come across the differences I will post them here.
Wikipedia claims 156 hp for the EJ252 and 165 hp for the EJ251. I'm not entirely convinced of this, it does seem as though a typo could have occurred and the 6 and 5 were transposed to give the 156 number. The Wiki is pretty inaccurate and poorly referenced, I've corrected a few things (The 00-04 Legacy/Outback engine types) that could be confirmed via opposedforces.com part numbers, but I will not take it as the truth just yet.
From researching part numbers here is what I have concluded as some of the differences/similarities:
Block halves: different, but listed as an interchange for either, so it is likely just marking differences
Cylinder heads/cams: Same
Pistons: Same
Connecting Rods Same
Crankshaft: Same
ECU: Different
Intake Manifold: Different
Throttle Body : Different (this is likely just because of the different style IACVs I show below)
Cam Pulleys: Same
So, if there is a performance difference it seems to be likely in the ROM on the ECU, though the manifold could also be a possibility, but 9 hp from an OEM manifold seems far-fetched.
I might try an EJ251 ECU and see what happens. The later years EJ251 used the same ECUs for the auto and manual cars, so in theory I could grab and EJ251 ECU out of an Auto and be able to give it a try. I do wonder about idle and controlling the IACV though, I will have to investigate that further.

Ok, so I've been mostly doing maintenance items so far in my first month of ownership. The mods will get a separate entry and will be linked in the first post. So to catch up to what I've done on it so far maintenance/non-mods/repairs:
When I bought the car it had two seizing u-joints, so the drive shaft needed to be replaceed immediately. Previous owner was quoted $900, I fixed it for $48, ah so glad I am not one of those people that don't have a choice but to pay someone else to work on my cars.
New drive shaft (used a 99 Outback drive shaft, first and second gen OB are fully compatible with each other, even though they have different part numbers, they are just built slightly different)
Replace the transmission output shaft seal (figured the bad u-joints might have buggered up the old one)
Remove previous owner's bumper stickers and dealer badges and remove the crusty AWD stickers
Re-sealed the exhaust, including replacing the exhaust manifold studs (that had mostly become bolts anyways) and using copper flange nuts instead to help prevent seizing in the future
Squeezed window gussets to get rid of howling wind noise
Installed Factory Crossbars
Replaced the glove box/lower dash trim piece
Cleaned the IACV (and replaced the ghetto black silicone seal the previous mechanic had used)
Replaced a cracked passenger head to airbox breather tube
Replaced PCV Valve
Changed oil and filter at odometer reading of 178,352. Valvoline NextGen 5W-30 with a can of MOA for good measure using a Purolator PureOne filter (usually use filters with better bypass pressure ratings, but I've got a few on the shelf and some car has to use them!)
Repaired Rear Defroster Grid in 4 places

Here's some pics of how it stood when purchased. What you can't see is how nasty some of the interior is. The seats are pretty dirty and the seat belts and carpet are downright filthy, I don't care for beige interiors much for how much they show dirt.
About 15 minutes after we bought it in Aspen, CO (my fxt is parked behind it)

Driving it home 3 hours that first day, the aspens were changing to a nice golden yellow for most of the drive.

So I'm still trying to sort a few little things from the OB's previous life. Cleaning the IACV cured the high cold-idle (it was at 3000 rpm and wouldn't drop until engine was fully warm.
Two days ago there was an incident that made me think my throttle position sensor is sticking. I was driving and had a sudden loss of power no matter how much I pushed the pedal, then all of a sudden, bam, big power surge. It seems as though the TPS wasn't moving with or sensing my increased throttle input thus the ECU wasn't sending more fuel. If I was monitoring my A/F ratio I would bet my mixture was starting to lean out with my increased throttle input before the surge. It's only happened the one time, but I'm going to address this now so it doesn't happen to the wife without me around.
So, to address that I went to the salvage yard today and picked up a TPS to swap in. While at the salvage yard I scored three 02-04 WRX rims, so those will be my winter rims after I source a 4th one, woohoo!

OEM Exhaust Manifold Port and Polish
When replacing the transmission output shaft seal I decided to do a few things since I had things out.
Replaced 5 of the exhaust manifold studs, the last one was really in there and was in the best shape, so I left it.
Replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets.
Did a quick little port and polish on the exhaust manifold.
Before (look at those sharp edges!):
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/10/FAsaXhrl-1.jpg
After (carbide bit, then 80 grit, then 120 grit):
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/10/vNwV25Xl-1.jpg
Note that the picture shows the exhaust manifold gasket on in the wrong orientation, the dimples go toward the exhaust and the smooth goes towards the heads.
When I punch it I can hear a little whistling in the exhaust (above ~3500 rpm), I think this is a result of the PNP as I don't think there are any more exhaust leaks, but I'll go over them again..

I don't know what happened to the reply from Muse, but he stated the whistling might be "phantom turbo".
After googling it and listening to some YouTube videos I think that is the issue.
At least now I won't be chasing my tail looking at other things. Interesting legacy-specific phenomenon.

Welcome to the spacious side of the Subaru line-up!
I enjoyed reading, "I hope I can keep the mod-bug at bay."
followed by a page of intended mods.
But when you read into them they're more like, "it just shoulda been that way to begin with" so with that clarity they're hardly mods but requisite improvements. :smt027

Yeah, laying out all the mods to make it a Limited looks like a lot.
Everything else is low-dollar things or stuff down the road. I'm not going to be pulling heads to do a port and polish/cams without another reason.

Battlewagon Skid Plate
One of the first things I noticed upon inspecting the car was that it was missing my under-tray, I am pretty convinced that a lot of independent mechanics pitch these the first time they seem them to make it easier on themselves down the road. Well, I like a cover for the aero/cooling benefits, but finding one is often difficult unless you want to buy directly from the dealer.
While perusing craigslist I stumbled upon a homemade skid plate, so I nabbed that and installed it. It already was painted with Battle Wagon on it, all I had to do was chase my threads in the mounting points and add some spacers on the backside of the plate on the front mounting points.
It's not going to protect from a rock bash, but it should help direct air and easily withstands the onslaught presented on paved and gravel roads, which is where this will spend 99.99% of it's life.

Limited Wood Grain Window Switch Trim and Misfire Troubleshooting
Ok, a little update.
First, I got my limited window switch trim in. I'm not a huge wood grain fan, but it is WAY better than the brown plastic that was there. So scratch that off the to-do list.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/10/2tZ6JT2l-1.jpg
I also replaced my torn air intake boot, not more sucking in hot engine air!
Now the P0301/P0302 misfire code troubleshooting.
I wanted to start out checking the easy things.
I started it up and let it idle, it wasn't misfiring.
I started wiggling wire bundles and injector connectors, none of that induced a misfire.
I then grabbed a screwdriver and started to use it as a stethoscope and listened to the injectors to see if any were exceptionally noisier or quieter than the other, no obvious issue there. Just as I was finishing this checkout the misfires began again. Idle became rough and the exhaust sounded like I had UEL headers on. I went over and sniffed the exhaust a little (put hand over tail pipe for a few seconds and then smelled hand) and it seemed a bit on the rich side, so it looks like the misfire is not necessarily on the fueling side of things.
So, next I "ohmed" out the spark plug wires. All values of these generic wires were about 50% higher than a spare set of NGK blues I had, so I swapped out the wires on cylinders 1 and 2. No change, misfires continued.
Another thing that the previous owner had changed earlier this year was the coil pack, so now it just had some no-name generic coil pack on it. I swapped that out for a used OEM one. Misfires went away!
Did some driving around town running errands and the light went out.
One the way home, the CEL came back on, but no loss of power or rough idle connected with it, and it wasn't a flashing CEL either.
Pulled the codes when I got home, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 and P0420. So misfire on all cylinders and the cat efficiency code Subaru is famous for.
So, I've got more things to check (plugs, crank sensor, camshaft sensor, etc), but the car hasn't had a rough idle or loss of power since swapping coils, so it seems better right now. A CEL constantly on will drive me insane, so I'll keep digging. First I think I'll reset the ECU and see if/how quickly it comes back.

Bike Tray Mod
So, I took some Subaru Bike trays, bolted them to the heads of some Rocky Mount racks that I had (they had bent trays from a bike on car into the garage door incident). They work great on the Outback as the OB has the extra length to handle the long trays, the only thing is the trays do not clear 180mm or larger disc brakes.
So out comes the dremel to fix that.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/10/859M0JAl-1.jpg
I'll put some black touch-up paint on there eventually, but it's aluminum and I'm not really that worried. I need to see if I still have some black touch up in the garage, otherwise the next time I'm spraying something with black I'll get these.

Today, I tackled the de-nastification of my door cards. I have no idea how the previous owner got them so nasty, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to know.
I had already tried a few different all-purpose cleaners without any response out of the stains. My brother used to professionally detail cars and he suggested I try lacquer thinner for cleaning some dirty visors I had, so I decided to give it a go on the door cards, fantastic results!

Yeah, the decal actually is nice because I used to be irked every time I would see the big dent, now I just smile in amusement. I know I'll get it fixed eventually, but in the mean time I hope it makes other people smile the way it does me, much better than just a huge dent.
In other news, I got the car through emissions, VIN inspected, title transferred and new plates.

Well, yesterday we had a balmy high temperature of 5 degrees here in Denver so I wasn't really planning on any car work, but I did some. I went out in the morning to slap on the new plates, as the temp tags had expired, and started the car to warm it up. This is when I discovered that the Outback leaks fuel when cold, it's the pretty common clamps-loosening-when-cold issue.
I first saw the leak on the passenger side and, of course, it was under a bracket that would not allow access to the clamp for re-tightening. I had to take off the air intake and that bracket to access it. I then positioned the clamp so that I can get to it without all of that work in the future.
I thought that did it, but then caught another whiff of raw fuel and sure enough the driver side had a leak too. This one was much easier as I just needed a longer screwdriver to get to it. I then went around and tightened all the clamps up I could get to, quite a few were loose.
So my 5-minute task in the single-digit weather turned into about an hour, but no probs now. I'll look into changing the clamp style once it gets warmer out.

So add that to the list of little things to pick up at the salvage yard.

So, today I realized the I am missing the left rear mud flap. Geez, it took me driving in snow and seeing a bunch of extra crud there compared to the other wheels to notice, nevermind having had the car for two months now. ;)
So add that to the list of little things to pick up at the salvage yard.

LL Bean Steering Wheel and Variable Intermittent Wipers
I installed the mahogany and leather Momo LL Bean steering wheel, much nicer feel to it that my plastic wheel. I had an 02/03 WRX Momo airbag in the garage so I decided to use that, it fits pretty well, but the top spokes seem a little off, so I might go back to the LL Bean airbag.

After:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/PjswSELl-1.jpg
Edited to add:
I went back to the LL Bean wheel, and here is what it looks like. Slightly better fit than the Momo, so I'm not sure which way I'll go in the end just yet.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/O5j6fNgl-1.jpg
While I had the wheel off I went ahead and upgraded my wiper stalk. The base Outback model has the intermittent wiper function, but it is not adjustable, it just wipes every 5-6 seconds. The higher trims and 02-07 Impreza wagons use the same switch, but have variable intermittent speed available. It's a straight swap, no wires to run.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/1sxJ2dil-1.jpg
It is worth noting that the 03-08 Foresters have a similar wiper stalk as well, but it adds additional functionality to the rear wiper. The Forester stalk allows you to have the rear wiper in intermittent or constant on (the Outback's "On" position is actually intermittent). I've swapped this stalk into my Impreza, but to get the additional functionality you have to swap some pins and run an additional wire all the way from the trunk area to the wiper switch, kind of a pain, but worth it to some.

Well, I had the seats out, so I decided to try and get some of the crud out of the carpet and at least make it slightly less embarassing.
Tools used:
Shampooer
Paper Towels
Scrub Brush
Lacquer Thinner
The shampooer alone barely touched it, so I had to up the ante and use some lacquer thinner and that was working pretty well. I didn't want to spend too much time on it, but I got it down to a better level of filthiness. Note that the lacquer thinner smell will take a little while to clear out, so drive with the windows down and leave them cracked/open when parked if possible.

My blower motor was louder than it should be, I figured the squirrel cage either had some dirt on it or a bent shaft making it out of balance.
When I got it out (which is a bit of a pain BTW) I discovered that somewhere along the line a mouse got in there, he was pretty well dehydrated now.
Needless to say after I buttoned it back up I also installed a cabin air filter from an LL Bean model.

I was able to score some good condition window trim pieces of an 03 LL Bean, so I swapped those in.
Mine had cracked, flaked and peeled to this level of ugliness. At least it was chromed underneath instead of rusting steel.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/IEuYGxCl-1.jpg
For anyone tackling this, to remove them you:
Pull out the window rubber
Remove 16 screws (each side) retaining trim piece in
Swap in new
Push window rubber back in the channel, making sure it is fully seated
Pretty simple and looks much better than the flaking off pieces that most 2nd gen Outbacks/3rd gen Legacies seem to have. I followed up the install with some 303 Aerospace Protectant to help it last.

16mm Upgraded Rear Sway Bar
I swapped in a 16mm rear sway bar to replace the 14mm bar my 01 has. The 16mm bar was in the 03-04 Outbacks. This will be good until I get a good deal on a Baja Turbo RSB.
Here's the comparison, tough to see visually, but it's a measurable 2mm. The one with the school bus yellow brackets (I was playing around with the Harbour Freight yellow powder coat powder) is the 16mm bar.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/IjYGyXWljpg1-1.jpg
And just for grins I compared the bar to an 02 Impreza and 06 STi bar to see if something there could be made to work. There are enough geometry differences that I don't think it will work for either of those varieties.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/UAyi9Yol-1.jpg
I had to cut off one of the old end links and chased all threads with dies/taps. This is a taste to come of what I get for having a car that spent a few winters in the salt belt. I reassembled everything with anti-seize (bolts) and Lucas Red and Sticky grease (bushings).
Here's a chart I made up for comparing stiffness of different sway bars. This comparison chart only is accurate for bars with the same lengths/bends and made of the same material.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/FPQbCu6l-1.jpg
So by my calcualtions this is an increase in RSB stiffness of 71%, not bad for a cheap mod.

Stereo Upgrade
I installed a Kenwood KDC-BT318U head unit that I picked up on Black Friday.
I extracted a radio-side 14-pin connector out of an old Subaru radio I had lying around and used that to make an adapter harness for a nice quick and clean install.
It has Pandora, Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in, etc. so it's a nice way to get better functionality in the car instead of the OEM unit. It's also single-din so I gained another cubby. Double-cubby FTW!
I routed the microphone to mount on the backside of the map light, works well there.

H6 Axle-Back Installed
I installed an axle-back out of a 2001 LL Bean. This is the H6 axle-back with the extra mechanical valve on it that opens at higher pressures. So, more back pressure down low for better torque and then it opens up at higher pressure for more top end . Since I'm running it on a 2.5L instead of the 3.0L I figure I cause the valve to open 20-35% later than in the H6. That's fine since the H6 opens it pretty early, 2400 RPM (22 psi).
Everything mates up to the H4 system just fine. Same size pipe and same gasket. My flanges were a little warped so I had to take the grinder with a flapper disc on it to get them close to flat again, a little filing and then some Permatex Ultra Copper for good measure. I had to cut off the original exhaust bolts, so that means I have now officially replace every bolt/stud/nut on the exhaust.
Here's the comparison pic of the two, you can see the H6 bypass valve on the side of the muffler.

Differential Crossmember Bushing Upgrade
Well, I was cleaning up the garage a bit and since I have a 4.11 VLSD waiting to go in as an upgrade and it had the diff crossmember piece with it, I decided to do a little upgrade to the bushings since I won't get around to installing the diff for a little while yet.
I had a little bit of 3m Windoweld left over from making some faux group-n transmission mounts (http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?29942-The-s%DCBERu-an-02-OBS-Build-Journal&p=395099&viewfull=1#post395099), so I decided to inject it into the voids of the diff cross-member bushings.
First, I cleaned them up with a stiff bristle brush.
Popped them in the oven for a bit to dry faster and soften the rubber a little.
Taped off one side of the bushings with aluminium tape
Stuffed the Windoweld tip into the bushing void and squeezed until it oozed out of everywhere.
Lather rinse repeat.
Now I have to wait a few days to a week for it to fully set before it will be ready for install.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/7o6PUeRl-1.jpg
This pretty much finished off the last of the tube of Windoweld for me, otherwise I would consider doing the rear diff bushings too.

doing a nice job on the upgrades. looks like your wheel is bent forward. I would try giving it a couple of gentle to not so gentle tugs at the ends of each spoke to close the gaps back up. I had to do this on my momo as well. I think someone may have beat on it to try and get it off the old steering shaft as they cross threaded and tore out the actual puller bosses.
Did you notice any performance gain at all with the 3.0 muffler? I would suspect any would be very slight at best, but hey, every little bit helps.
Make sure to post pics of the key illumination install. I have been thinking about getting one out of a later car for my 98, just havent researched the needed parts yet.

Yeah, I think the steering wheel is bent. It will take more than I can pull to straighten it, but I've got a couple ideas to try.
No big noticeable gains from the H6 muffler, other than sweet silence, so I'm tentative to say there were any.

What nepbug said is correct, there is no BIU on the 2000-2002s. It took me forever to find one for my car, as it had to be a 2003-2004 and it had to be an automatic.
Interestingly enough, the GD/GG BIU is identical to the 2003-2004 Legacy/Outback one, with the exception of the mounting bracket. When I had just about given up on finding one, I snagged an AT BIU from a GG figuring I would modify it to work. As I was on the way out, I found a 2004 Legacy L Automatic in the wrong section, so I grabbed both. I decided to try the GG one and it worked perfectly.

All-Red Tail Lights
I didn't care for the amber in the tails and didn't care to pay the price for JDM tails, so I did the next best thing and made all-red tails to get rid of the amber.
Here's the paints I used to accomplish this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/JA593ptl-1.jpg
I'm really liking Duplicolor stuff lately, this time around I'm using the adhesion promoter, MetalCast Red and the wheel clear (extra clear I had from doing some wheels).
First I scuffed up the lens with some 1000-grit wet sandpaper. Then sprayed some adhesion promoter over the entire tail light.
After that was dry I masked it off to spray the red.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/Wdif99vl-1.jpg
2-3 light coats and one medium coat of red and I end up with this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/ysWJEI8l-1.jpg
Now I repeat for the other side (ideally I'd have done them together to ensure a match, but they came out good still).
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/RguhUrWl-1.jpg
Now I do some 1500 grit wet sanding to remove some of the orange peel and marks from the masking tape.
Then I mask it again, this time for clear over the entire tail light.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/InYNosVl-1.jpg
After clear I wet-sanded it with 2000-grit until ALL orange peel was gone and it was a uniformly cloudy and smooth surface over the entire lens.
Then it was time for a buff/polish and voila, done.

The sun came out and temperature rose to 33°F so I jumped at the opportunity to get something done. Install the hood deflector since it is big, awkward and always in the way in the garage? Sounds like a plan!
The deflector is much cleaner than the rest of the car, but nothing is getting a wash for a few days as everything melts out around here.

Oil Pan Heater
I decided that I would install an oil pan heater on the Outback. No real downsides to doing this, all upside in my book.
I installed a Kat's 24100 100W 4"x5" Silicone Pad Heater (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I8VL3O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It's the right size physically and power-wise for our cars, and is less than $30.
Step 0: Warm up oil.
Before starting everything I ran the car a little to get the oil warm.
Step 1: clean off oil pan.
I used some degreaser at first and finished with some brake cleaner. The Kat's instructions say to sand down to bare metal, but I did not like that idea; I'll risk it. ;)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/01/zposK8Pl-1.jpg
Step 2: Apply heater.
I applied it on the front/bottom of the pan. It conforms well and the adhesive is stronger than I was expecting. Roll out bubbles as best you can.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/01/zOTOavml-1.jpg
I made sure to place it in a manner so that any oil drips while doing oil changes wouldn't get on the pad.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/01/BsyX90Wl-1.jpg
Step 3: Use high-temp silicone to seal the edges.
This will prevent grime/moisture from migrating under the pad and causing it to lift. I used Permatex 81160 (http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-81160-High-Temp-Silicone-Gasket/dp/B0002UEN1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420913018&sr=8-1), which turns out to be a good color match too!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/01/p6YGHjQl-1.jpg
Step 4: Route cord.
I routed mine along the lower radiator hose and then up near my battery. I think I will eventually grab one of these power outlets (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NV0V8C/ref=s9_wish_co_d99_g200_i2?ie=UTF8&colid=KUE6T28AXJI4&coliid=I17ZDGR69ZUF39&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-1&pf_rd_r=10KN1W88CC5EC1EPZQYD&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=1774862042&pf_rd_i=typ03) (or similar) to make a clean and convenient place to plug in.

In other little maintenance stuff I also replaced a headlight bulb that was finnicky and the driver side tail panel bulb holders as there was some corrosion causing connection issues there.
The oil pan heater install was so simple and cheap that I'm going to slap one on my Impreza and Forester as well.

It just plugs into an extension cord coming from my garage. I pop the hood and grab it and plug it in. I will eventually move on to a solution in which I don't have to pop the hood and don't have a cord dangling out the front of the car.
Actually, I don't have a block heater, just an oil pan heater now. The way I look at it, the oil pan heater is nice for the engine, block heater is nice for the passengers (faster heat). Though block heaters do tend to help warm the oil some too.
I might eventually do the block heater as well, but I'll do that at the same time as a coolant flush.

Yeah, Minnesota is where these things would shine. Apartment living sucks for having cars as a hobby. I don't think I could ever adapt back to apartment living now that I have been in a house for the last ten years.
Also, I'm glad I don't have to deal with Minnesota winters, Denver is actually pretty mild during the winter. Yesterday was 50-something degrees and sunny, that's not uncommon.

Well, I plugged in the oil pan heater last night for a test run (I really should get a timer so that I don't run it all night).
It got down to the low 20's, so not crazy cold. Engine start up was nice and smooth and was quieter than usual; the heat came through the vent noticeably quicker too (though not as quick as I would expect out of a block heater). Overall, I'm quite happy with the install.

Haven't done anything on the car for a few weeks, but the weather is looking good this weekend so I've got plans in the making. VLSD is going in the rear. That could be a real potential headache as I will need to remove axles and suspension bolts and this car has seen salt belt winters a few times in it's life. I think I will start soaking bolts in penetrating oil tonight.
If that goes smoother than I expect (yeah right, that never happens) I also have a glove box surround to swap in and some rear shocks too along with the missing mudflap, so it could be a productive day or frustrating day. I'll see come Saturday.
I'm trying to lay out a plan to get control of my garage again by the end of the month, which means the engine and transmission need to go back into the Impreza.

Did you end up getting the H-6 LL Bean springs/shocks for the OB??
Just the fronts. The only difference between the H6 suspension and the H4 suspension are the front springs, everything else is the same.
So, I won't slap those springs on just yet, it would lift my front end and my back would still be down, I need to get some spacers are different springs for the back end first.
You know, after looking things over I think I won't install the 05 struts and springs this weekend. I think that will actually lower the car 1/2" or so, I'll just deal with the bouncy ride for a little longer. I'm pretty sure I'll go with baja turbo rear springs and end up doing more lift than I was planning, because, well this picture:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/9909side-1.jpg
Stock size tires don't look ridiculous with the Baja lift, I thought it would. So, onwards to H6 front and Baja rear springs!

Yellow Fog Lights
Today I finished yellowing the fog lights. It's a combination of Duplicolor Metalcast gold on the inside of the lens and yellow Lamin-x on the outside for a little rock protection.
I baked the lenses in the oven for 12 minutes at 225°F, pulled them apart, sprayed 6 light coats of Duplicolor Metalcast Gold on the inside. Then I put the housing and lens back in the oven for about 10 minutes again to soften the sealant and reassembled them. That resulted them looking like this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/PisQ1c3l-1.jpg
I then added some 1-mil Lamin-X Yellow for a little rock protection and to darken it to about what I wanted. I lucked out that it came out just about the color I wanted.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/r1Ma6ijl-1.jpg
Here's a comparison of with and without the extra Lamin-X layer. Driver side is just painted, passenger side has the added Lamin-X.

The wife drove the car early this morning and mentioned that it was making a sound when she would downshift or let off the gas. So I took it for a test drive and sure enough, loud grinding sounds from the drive shaft tunnel when off the gas and in gear.
So, since I recently had the diff out I crawled under to make sure I didn't do something stupid like forgot to tighten the drive shaft to diff bolts, but that was all fine. Here's what I did find though:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/6JBUJb8-1.jpg
Ice all around the drive shaft and just generally stuffed under the heat shield.
So, once it melts out it should be fine, and when we have another round of nice weather I'll have to look into bending the heat shield to allow less water/slush up there.
In another note, I caught another whiff of raw fuel too, so I went back and tightened the fuel hose clamps again, several had already loosened. So, that'll be another warm weather task, loctite those clamps.

Thanks, this is the second set of fogs I've yellowed. I did my Impreza bugeye fogs a little darker and then used 3M clear bra for protection.
So over dinner last night the wife said that she was running the car through the biggest slush puddles she could find to make fresh tracks and have a little fun. So that explains why there was so much ice packed up in there. It all melted out and was fine.

Thanks. Yeah, the Impreza side is a little different, but I'm finding a lot of that knowledge does still apply. Aftermarket support is quite diminished in comparison, so you have to be a bit more creative. I think this summer I might try to weld up some of my own chassis braces as a welding exercise. We'll see how it goes.
This car is sort of a test bed for doing mods to the other cars, for instance, I'm going to try to powder coat some calipers myself; this car will get it done first before I do it on the Impreza.
Good idea, I love my imprezas but I wanted to do something different this time around.
I would like to start powder coating I thought about picking up a cheap oven off of Craigslist for the garage. Haha I dunno how well that would work though.

That's what I've done so far
I picked up the HF Powder Coat Gun (http://www.harborfreight.com/10-30-psi-powder-coating-system-94244.html) on sale and some powder. Then I scored a $5 toaster oven on craigslist to start with. I watched a few youtube videos and off I went.
I recently went and got a $20 toaster oven off craigslist that is about twice as big as the first one, this one I think I can do a caliper in.
A full size oven would be nice, but you have to make sure you have the outlet and the room for it. If I had more room I would get one.
A few things I've coated, still learning.

02-04 Center Console Swap (Dual Cup Holder)
I swapped in an 02-04 center console with the dual cup holders. When doing this swap you need the cup holder trim piece and the entire piece that has the console box, they are both different from the 00-01 version.
Differences between the 00-01 and 02-04 Consoles
02-04 has dual cup holders, while 00-01 has single
02-04 heated seat switches are more forward than the 00-01
02-04 console lid is about an inch higher than the 00-01 lid
02-04 console is the dark brown for the entire console, the 00-01 is tan/brown two-tone.
03-04 AWD symbol plate is different than the 00-02 plate and they are not swappable.
So right now I have a badge plate on it that says "AWD H6 3.0", so I'll need to grab an "AWD" one the next time I come across it...or swap in an H6.

Rear VLSD and Skid Plate Install
I swapped in a 4.11 viscous limited-slip diff out of an 03 Outback LL Bean. With it, I also swapped in a rear diff skid plate.
I previously had an open diff in there. Even though cars101.com says that all outbacks from 01 forward had the VLSD, that's not true. The base model doesn't. This is the second time I've run across things being wrong at cars101.com (first time was some incorrect final drive ratios for some Foresters), so it's just a good reminder that you shouldn't take that as the absolute final truth.
Here's the pic of it all up there, reminds me that I need to go wash all that dried mag chloride off, thankfully it's not salt.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/03/FjknW66jpg1-1.jpg
So, this is probably the 4th rear diff swap I've done in a Subaru, this one was the first one that I had to get creative to get the fill and drain plugs out, they were definitely over-tightened by someone in the past. This was also the first time I had extreme difficult in getting in one of the axles. The first axle went in like it normally would, the second axle didn't want to go. I had to get creative with a ratcheting strap to get it to go on, that worked well and didn't harm the axle boot in the process.

High Flow Cat Wrap, Paint and Port and Polish
I had some old header wrap that was not totally unusable so I decided to use it to wrap my high flow cat section.
First the HFC was painted. Then I wrapped it. Then I sprayed the wrap with DEI Black High Temp Silicone Coating. It looks a bit ratty, but should serve it's purpose.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/03/WSmtRSOl-1.jpg
Then I did a little port and polish on the inlet. Carbide burr, 80 grit, 120 grit and then 240 grit; I didn't feel the need to go finer than that. While doing the PNP I stuffed a rag in the tubing to prevent debris from getting into the cat.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/03/kIZFL41l-1.jpg
I'll let the paint cure for at least a week before installing it, I've heard that DEI paint can smoke quite a bit during curing.
One note, I really didn't care for the spray nozzle on the DEI paint, I much prefer the Duplicolor and VHT style nozzle.

Well, I've been inspired by still_alive (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?14093-DIY-UEL-Single-Port-Header) and LeggyxPower (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?18227-LeggyxPower-s-1998-GT-HVAC-LEDS-INSTALLED/page2&p=264188#post264188) to make my own set of UEL headers. I ordered the bends I need tonight. In my 20 minutes of looking I only found Jegs and Summit as having the necessary bends, and Jegs had the better price.
Here's what I bought.:
Jegs P/N 555-319213 (http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/319213/10002/-1) (1 5/8" tubing with a 4" center-line radius)
Jegs P/N 555-319310 (http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/319310/10002/-1) (1 5/8" tubing with a 6" center-line radius)
Cost came to ~$38 shipped to my door.
Now I just need to pick up an OEM header and get my welder and the garage wired for it and this project will be a go. I could always take it in to work and weld it, but it's kind of a big awkward thing to bring in to do, but if I run into snags getting my welder setup, then that is what I will do.
I'm not a big fan of the way the two sides join up, so I might splurge and buy a 2 into 1 collector here:
http://www.coneeng.com/pdf/3-1%20&%20%202-1%20%20Collector%20PDF.pdf
I need to take some measurements first though.

Thanks! I have the 04, so the only upgrade then except for aftermarket is to go to the Baja bar, I didn't know they changed between 02 and 03, that would be another reason why the 01 outback I had felt like a pig and this one is more planted

Yeah, once I went to the 16mm from the 14mm, the difference was night and day. The rear springs are pretty soft, so a soft sway bar just exaggerates the problem.

I finally got the Outback tinted. Always one of the best mods, functional and aesthetically pleasing in one swoop. I especially appreciate the front windshield strip, once you get used to having that it's frustrating to have a car without it. 3M 20% tint all around.

Heated Seat Install
I did this a while ago, but never got around to writing it up. My Outback was a bare bones base model and came with non-heated cloth. In this scenario, the wiring isn't even there for the seat heaters. Through some scrounging I came up with a set of 01 LL Bean Heated leather seats and the wiring harness from an 03. The 03 harness falls a little short when using the 00-01 single-cup center console, so I had to extend the switch wires there.
The start, bleh.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/YnoWzhgl-1.jpg
First I started with the salvaged harness. I chopped out from the passenger foot well to the driver's seat. That looked like this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/6A0UPkzl-1.jpg
That is much more than you need. I pared it down to what was needed for heated seats only, this is what that looks like:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/qHzljOjl-1.jpg
Finally, tidy it up with some electrical tape.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/PSsNWHil-1.jpg
Now everything is ready to install.
Pull out the seats, center console and door sill trim on the passenger side. You might need to pull out the b-pillar trim too, you need to get under the carpet.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/163ifkBl-1.jpg
Your power and illumination hookup is in the passenger foot well, look for these connectors. The white connector with fewer wires (2 rows) will have the power, the white connector with more wires (3 rows) will be where you get illumination.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/rdL1SVgl-1.jpg
See the two vacant pins at the far left of the middle row, those are for illumination.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/mVTvkyRl-1.jpg
Insert the extracted pins on the backside of the connector (the other side of the connector is already populated with illumination wires.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/XTAuLM3l-1.jpg
For the power, the connector is already populated, the light blue wire is what you want. I removed the sheath in a section and soldered-spliced in the heated seat harness.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/U3TCLDFl-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/lcQsdsKl-1.jpg
Hard part done. Run the wires under the carpet, don't forget to attach your ground for your new harness under the passenger seat, and poke the connectors out in the appropriate places.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/OD1GtLAl-1.jpg
Put the interior back in and plug in the heater elements. Turn on car and power them up, enjoy.

Well, I just purchased some new KYB dampers for the car. I went with the 04 Outback version as they have a higher damping rate than the 01 version.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/JihKqLdpng-1.jpg
I went through RockAuto, used a 5% off coupon code, and there is a $40 mail-in rebate right now, so it came out to under $60 per strut shipped to my door. Score.
These will be paired with some 05 Baja turbo springs for a lift of ~1.5 inches. I didn't want to use the Baja struts as that would give me even more lift and that is more than I am looking for. So, I will eventually have my Baja turbo struts for sale.

BH vs BP vs Baja Turbo Strut Comparison

Front Struts. Left is new KYB 04 Outback, Right is 05 Baja Turbo.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/KAtoiADl-1.jpg
Bottom bolt to spring perch is the same, the strut tube above the spring perch is 3/4" longer on the Baja strut, strut stroke length is the same. So overall the Baja strut is 3/4" taller.
Rear struts. Left is an 06 outback, middle is 04 Outback, right is 05 Baja turbo.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/ajYMLMHl-1.jpg
The 05-09 OB struts has a sping perch that is lower than the others, but has the longest strut tube of the bunch. 04 Outback has the same spring perch height as the 05 Baja, but the Baja has a slightly longer strut tube (3/4"). The 04 OB and the 05 Baja have the same stroke as well, the 06 OB has a shorter stroke.

nepbug hmm, this is good info. It's reported the Baja swap lifts third gen OBs, but this indicates the OB's longer strut makes for a more cushioned ride in the third gens. This speaks highly for Baja springs alone. I'm awaiting THAT report! :glasses7:
More fuel for my suspecting OBs are trending more towards the luxery side of the crossover market. The 4th and 5th gens fueled that fire substantially as well.

Baja Turbo Springs on 04 Outback Struts
I installed some 05 Baja Turbo Springs with some new KYB struts for an 04 Outback, here's the result:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/05/tFQNstjl-1.jpg
Here's the wheel arch height pictures.
Rear Before:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/05/qbDv8txl-1.jpg
Rear After:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/05/JmLUXDsl-1.jpg
Front Before:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/05/Tv2RbKJl-1.jpg
Front After:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/05/ybcKEJNl-1.jpg
So it looks like 1-1.25" of lift in the rear and 1.75" of lift in the front. The front is likely greater because these were springs out of an 05 Baja Turbo with automatic transmission and I put them in a 5MT Outback.
The ride is stiffer for sure now, reminds me of my Forester XT. So comfort is slightly down, but I've got better handling now and I'm not bottoming out over my neighborhood speed bumps. I like this change.
I'll ponder whether I want to add in some 0.5" spacers in the rear or not in the future to even it out, but it doesn't look that noticeable to me.
Edited to add:
After driving around on them for a little bit now I really like the ride. Handling is improved even at the higher ride height. If I were to do autocross or even rallycross with this car I think these springs with some amount of coil cutoff would be a good choice, you could get back down to stock height and increase the spring rate a little further by doing that, cheap, yet quality stiff springs.

the lift is impressive for just springs. Expect them to settle with time but you'll probably still be .75-1" in rear and 1-1.25" in front with settling. Maybe just .25" rear spacers. I think coparing front to rear at fender is deceiving b/c of differing fender clearances front-rear.
It looks good t hough, again, i'm impressed with the lift from springs alone. I'd always assumed it was a spring-strut combo but this is good confirmation for Baja springs alone for useful lift in a 2nd gen OB.
I bet it'll ride comparably better when loaded too, this will be a good, loaded, over the road/camping set-up.

Well, I was just comparing them because I previously had stated that the ride felt like the FXT now, but now that I've driven them back-to-back I was correcting that to "not quite". I would still think the OB could use more dampening in the rear even if I wasn't comparing it to the FXT. Going over speed bumps takes just a tad longer to damp out than I would like.
With my setups right now, the OB has a solid 17mm rear sway bar and the FXT has a hollow 17mm rear sway, so it is very likely that the OB has a stiffer RSB at the moment.
I've also wondered just what it would take to fit SH (09-13) Forester suspension into my gen Outback. That might provide more lift than the Baja stuff and stiffer dampers.

Intake Manifold Spacers
I recently made some intake manifold spacers for my Impreza, since I had some extra material I figured I would make a set for the Outback too.
I always liked the ixizIce intake manifold spacers (http://www.ixizconcept.com/ixizigskt/ixizICE_pd.htm) because they measure up well to the phenolic spacers for heat transfer and are thinner, only 3mm instead of 8mm or so. The issue with the ixizIce spacers is that they are made for the turbo heads, thus they do not have the correct guide pin pattern for the EJ251/252 heads. I did a bit of research and it is likely that they are made from G10 material. So, I ordered up a sheet of 1/8" (~3mm) G10 material from MSC Direct (https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/63407738) and got to work hand fabricating some.
I just traced them out on the G10 and then began working it with my drill press and a variety of Dremel bits. It was a bit of a trial and error process, but at the end I was using a few different carbide burrs, a sanding drum and a drill bit to do them. Still took a little while to do each one. I spent the most time on the intake port as it is most critical, the other stuff could be rougher and not affect anything.
First port done.

Mountain biking is a great sport. For a tip, buy a decent bike to start, but not what you think a dream bike should be; after riding for a while you will be able to really hone in on the type of bike you really want. Only other tip I'll give is don't go out too hard, try to keep yourself in check a bit, you'll be able to go further and enjoy it more, mountain biking can be punchy, requiring bursts of power to get over obstacles so try to ease up between those to recover. Slow riding is better than stopping to recover. And get out there and ride as often as you can!

It would be an interesting fitment to do 3rd gen Foz into a 2nd gen OB. Agreed it could provide better lift and shock feel than just springs and Excel-Gs. It could also do good for 3rd gen and possibly 4th gen OBs. . .

My wheels on the OB look like they've been neglected by the previous owner, I'm pretty sure they were never cleaned. So I grabbed some Griot's Garage Heavy-Duty Wheel Cleaner and tried to see what it would do. I only had time to get the fronts done, so the back will be another day. Here's a comparison of the backs that haven't been cleaned to the front that have. I'm happy, the baked-on brown gunk is an eye sore.

Also, my driver's front axle split it's inner boot so I replaced that axle with another OEM one I had hanging around. I'll reboot this one and keep it as a spare. I think the Baja spring lift was the final straw for that boot. Hopefully this one holds up a bit better. I'll have to bust out my Subaru-powered power washer to clean up the rest of the grease spatter as I just gave it a quick wipe with paper towels.

I thought I would change up the grill a little, swapped in an 05 Baja Turbo grill.
So here's a shot of the grill collection I have right now:

Bottom 05 Baja Turbo

Just did an oil change today.
Utilized an Amsoil EA012 synthetic media filter, Supertech 5W-30 oil and a can of BG MOA.
Also, I have had my engine temp rise to the 3/4 mark a few times in the last week. I'm not losing coolant and have no bubbles, so the head gasket is fine. I suspect a possible sticking thermostat, but today I noticed that it appears that my primary fan (not the one triggered by the A/C) doesn't seem to kick on. I'll troubleshoot that a little more before I replace the thermostat (which I've already ordered an OEM one).
nepbug

Well, the main fan fuse was blown (20A in the engine compartment fuse box), so I replaced that. I'll see if it blows again or if it was just a fluke.
nepbug
08-28-2015, 11:23 AM
So it looks like the fuse was the only issue, I guess it was just that fuse's time to go. It's been fine since, no drama. If I come across a good deal in the future I might upgrade to an H6 radiator, plus it would just keep giving me reason to consider an H6 swap or supercharger.

Just realized that a few days ago (Sept 12th, 2015) marked one year of ownership for the Outback. Happy anniversary workhorse, you're much nicer than when I got you!
The next year should be slower in the mods as I feel like I'm getting pretty happy with where the car is. In the near future will be a few body work things as I want to get that done before winter and also some brake upgrades.
I'll say that the best mods to the car so far have been the Baja Turbo springs/RSB and window tint. That would top my to-do list for another one of these.

Cold weather is coming, but it was beautiful out today, so that meant it was time to repair my heated seats. I only had the seat bottoms working, so I just needed to replace the seat back heating elements.
Disassembly is pretty straight forward, the only tricky part if the back cover. To remove it you have to slide it up, pull out the bottom and then slide it back down.

You could see where the element burned up and broke.

The 8-way power seat is a little trickier because you can't manipulate the seat back without power, but still wasn't that difficult.

Finished my winter prep of the Outback today.
Loosened all of my fuel hose clamps that are near the block/intake manifold (4 on passenger side and 4 on driver side), added red loctite to the threads and then tightened them in an orientation that gives me access without taking too much off. No surprise fuel leaks from those clamps backing off in cold weather like last year, that sucked spending an hour chasing leaks in 5°F weather.
I also tightened up the clamps around the fuel filter (no loctite there) and found a few to be "not tight".

I put the outback up on a lift yesterday and did some inspections of the undercarriage. Everything looks good except the headgasket on the right side, it's moved beyond a weep and to a drip.
I might be one of the few people that is excited to have to do head gaskets, time for some upgrades!
I've got an extra set of heads in the garage so I'll start porting/polishing them and I'll send the cams off for a regrind at Delta. I'm thinking 1000 grind, but might go for 1500 grind, anyone have any opinions on the matter?
I might even build a rudimentary flow bench to do some flow testing and possibly velocity tune the heads.

I guess another positive thing is that (in my limited experience) the bolts in areas that have oil all over them (from leaks) don't shear off due to rust. They are actually decent to deal with (even if really dirty).

Ok, there was some brainstorming tonight about a possible head flow bench, here's a thought:
Go to a junkyard and get a MAF sensor, ECU, MAP sensor and OBD2 port from a car, all with pigtails and wire it up so that you can use the ECU to read the MAF and MAP signals and you log it via the OBD2 port. Sounds simple, but I would bet I'd need to simulate some other signals to fool the ECU, but maybe not. I could always go with manometers or magnahelic gauges, but I like the ability to log it and not having to get a calibrated orifice plate to get an actual flow number.
Also, I'm trying to think how important it would be to have a 99.5mm tube on the combustion chamber to simulate the engine cylinder and any shrouding it may contribute.
For future reference, here's some flow numbers for some Subaru heads

Valve Cover grommets: 13271AA071 x 10
Filler tube o-ring: 806923060 x 1
Spark Tube Seals - 10966AA030 x 4
Oil Pump O-Ring - 10991AA001 x 1
Head Gaskets - 11044AA642 x 2 (STi MLS gaskets, will raise compression slightly)
VC Gaskets - 13294AA053 - x 2
Intake Gaskets - 14035AA383 x 4
Cam Seals - 806732150 x 2
Crank Seal - 806733030 x 1
Cyl 4 Wrist Pin O-Ring - 806931070 x 1
Cam Plug - 807045040 x 2
That should just about cover it for what I need and stuff to do while I'm in there, might reseal the oil separator plate too. Now to get the cams sent to delta for the regrind and start a port/polish of the heads. We'll see what seals for the valve train I end up needing.

I've been out of the country and when i got back my wife let me know that the Outback has a new noise to it. It's got a pretty good vibration sound that seems to be coming from the rear end. It seems to start around 60 mph and clears up around 70mph. It's not any louder or quieter when turning one direction, so it's not really sounding like a wheel bearing. Also, if I let off the gas the sound almost goes away entirely. I'll have to crawl under there this weekend and see what I can find.

Well, I had an hour this weekend to do a little troubleshooting. I disconnected the drive shaft from the rear diff and checked the u-joints there and everything was smooth there. I didn't have much time anything else other than some wiggling and prodding. I did find that my VLSD is no longer good and the diff is acting like an open diff now, so that points to a potential rear diff problem. I do believe I have another 4.11 rear diff in my garage right now so I'll look to swap that in this next weekend because I want the LSD action again anyways. If that doesn't solve it I'll take the entire drive shaft out to inspect the other u-joints and then move on to removing the axles for closer inspection.
The noise has gotten worse and now is unhappy at 35mph as well.

Whoa, long time since I posted in here (tapatalk support going away really has cut back my time on this forum)
Anyways, I replaced the knock sensor yesterday after throwing a code for it, everything is happy again. I've developed a little bit of a shake at highway speeds and during high speed braking. I think it is due to the rear transverse link on the front control arms starting to go; I just received some Febest replacement bushings that I hope to get installed today.
In other things coming up, I have new rotors and pads waiting to go on in better weather as well as the seals to do caliper rebuilds all around. Lastly, I've got to take some pictures and write up my 04/05 V-Limited STi front lip install.
nepbug

Ok, new transverse link bushings in, pretty simple, but a PITA to torque things to 181 ft-lbs and 137 ft-lbs while the car is on the ground. Glad I have installed baja turbo springs to give me that little bit of extra clearance. I found putting it on my slanted driveway and then driving on my ramps to level the car gave me a lot more room to work when doing the torques.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/12/1b755TDljpg1-1.jpg
The new ones are from Febest, I've heard good things about them, I hope they hold up. The right side bushing was blown, the left side was actually still good. I'm going to attempt to get the bushings pressed out so I can press in some urethane bushings and use them in my Impreza or Forester build.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/12/2gZ0uD1l-1.jpg
Also, I need to put a more up-to-date pic up, here it is as it sits now (dirty, like it usually is as well, lol), you can see the lip in this pic. I'll have to lok if I have any pics from the summer, I was running some 17" gold Oz Superleggeras all summer, they looked good.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/10/edL5HEpl-1.jpg
I noticed that I have a torn steering rack boot while I was under there today. I think I'll plan on continuing the front end refresh a bit and start gathering parts to replace the inner and outer tie rods, ball joints and maybe the forward control arm bushing, that should tighten everything back up again.

Sorry for the late reply, you can't tell just from an external look. The easiest way is to jack up the rear and then spin one of the wheels. If both rear wheels spin the same way, it's got the VLSD, if they spin opposite directions then it's an open differential.
If it has the cold weather package, you have a great shot that it has the VLSD.

Ok, bad news. Last Friday I was driving to dinner when all of a sudden the Outback died while slowing for a light. No, symptoms before and it would not start. So I've towed it home and started troubleshooting.
I figured it might be the fuel pump cap that is known to crack, checked for fuel at the rail, that was fine. Pulled pump anyways since I just verified flow and not presssure, the cap was good and the o-ring was in place.
Next up was spark, I was getting good spark in for all cylinders.
Ok, pulled CEL codes, no codes at all!
Today, I finally had good enough weather to pull the timing covers and check timing.
Well, fellas, I'm in for some more work. I'm not impressed with the previous mechanic's work.

Me too man, when I started my swap I was flooded with information from guys on this site. Any other site you always get the " Use the search " reply. This site is more of a small community full of knowledgeable legacy guys haha.

Thanks dna, I think I've got a plan figured out, the workhorse sits for the time being though, I've got about another month of insane workload at work, so I'm just planning right now until I have the opportunity to actually dig into this more.

Great build! I did the Woodgrain Steering Wheel swap with Momo airbag as well. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to use the LL Bean Airbag on your car, as it was designed to have a 3.0 engine in front of it (different part number than 2.5 airbags).

It's got a different part number because it's made for a different wheel. The airbag does not care what engine you have.

Well, I feel like I need to tie a bow on this one. After the timing belt slipped I fixed the heads, put all new timing stuff in it, then ended up gifting it to my brother. He put some good miles and years on it and fixed the front fender, before it was eventually sold to a guy that took it to Wisconsin (or maybe it was Minnesota) for college. So, the 2001 outback wagon is out of my life, but damn was it a good car and I still find parts for it in my garage occasionally, lol.
Hope it's still out there kicking, but who knows if it received the love that it deserved.
Oddly enough, I gave it away with the WRX wheels on it, and now I'm running the Outback wheels on my wife's Prius commuter!
