So out of the dozens of boards that I'm on (all with the same name if you see me somewhere else), I think this is the first introduction thread I made. Anyway, my name is Anthony, people call me Junior. I have a shop in upstate NY (Woodstock). There I spend late nights building all kinds of crazy shit. I'm not a fan of the bolt on, I basicaly make everything myself. Not to much I can't do with a torch and a welder. My last project was a BF Legacy wagon with the stock NA 2.2 boosted by the spare Toyota CT-26 turbo (from an MA70 Supra) I had laying around. The car was built 100% with spare and junkyard parts, the up and downpipes were literaly made from crap I pulled out of my junk metal pile. The thing performed pretty well (about 160 whp on 7-8 psi), but it was ugly as hell. It the motor was teh victim of a trail dammage when running through a quarry trail at a high rate of speed. Coming off a small jump the car bottomed out and bunt the exhaust up, which moved the turbo and caused the oil return line to leak. Rod knock showed it's nasty face in short order as it didn't take long at 6k to dump most of the oil out.

That car is being stripped now and has been replaced with my new project (if you need parts, let me know I'm crushing it soon). New car is a 95 BK4 wagon. On the engine stand right now is an EJ22 with ported EJ25 SOHC heads with pollished valves (http://www.trdsupra.com/library/subaru/EJ25%20SOHC%20Heads/), EJ25 intake, wrx stainless header with the end chopped off. Right now I'm fabricating the rest of the header to fit my t3/t4 turbo and external wastegate with dump tube. I've got a giant front mount IC for it plus I some other tweaks and tricks.

Anyway, that's basicaly what I've got goin on right now Subaru wise (have my Toyota project and a few Audi's I'm working on too).

sounds cool man. Why are you wasting your time with the N/A EJ22 block though? You'll never be able to run enough psi to make any power. You should try and track down an EJ20t, EJ22t, or EJ257 bottom end to put in that setup, you'll be much happier with the results.

because I want a high compression motor. When I break the pistons on this shortblock I'll have some custom pistons made. That's the only part I'm woried about.

Aren't you worried about damage to other internals if the pistons disintegrate?

Sounds cool man, props to you for being so mechanically capable.

Welcome, any pics of the project?

haha, i recognize this project. It's the toyota-subaru hybrid!

Nice to see you here.

1. Why do you want a high compression motor if you are turbocharging it?

2. Even if you get new pistons, the block itself won't hold much more psi. Get a turbo block and raise the compression if you care that much

because what he's doing is pioneering and fun!

Plus what he's doing is making stuff with what he has, so he's not sinking a lot of money into it.

From a performance aspect, I agree with you sheepdog, but I don't think he's looking to set any 1/4 mile records.

I can understand the idea of doing something cheaply or with parts you have, and I really don't want anyone to think im ragging on him. I'm just asking questions ;) because its not the way i would do it. If he is talking about replacing pistons down the line, he might as well get a turbo block now, in my opinion.

It's a street car so I want high compression. Better throttle response, better area under the curve, better fuel economy, overall more efficient. The expense is slightly less peak horsepower on pump gas. The result will be a car that's overall faster than others making up to 50+ more horsepower on low compression engines. With my turbo and intercooler setup I should be able to see over 200whp pretty easily and instantaneous spool on my turbo. That should be enough to put the car well into the 13s and be more than enough fun on the street. At that level I'm not concerned about the block at all. The pistons, maybe. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to ward off detonation, but the pistons are stock NA pistons, so I'm not to sure what horsepower they’ll be able to handle, simple by means of cylinder pressure. If I could have found a forged piston off the shelf that would have yielded me the 9.2:1 compression I was after, I would have bought them, but the added cost of customs pistons swayed me to seeing how far these things can go. I'm kinda a pro at that anyway, I've done it a few times on various other projects. If they can’t get me as far as I want to go I’ll have some custom slugs made.

The end result will be a pretty nasty street machine. With Waterfest over I think I’ll have some time to finish putting this engine together before I need to prepare for //S-fest. A few Audi projects and a lot of beer drinking have been distracting me lately.

that does pretty much sum up how the project started. The only record I like to go for is how far I can push stock parts. As a general rule of thumb, I don't replace things until I break them :)

Tell that to douglas vincent too...supercharged EJ22E.

Yup, Doug has a pretty nasty project... he's been doing a lot of engine management experimenting and his concoction seems to be coming along pretty well. He might make that 200whp number pretty soon himself if he hasn't already.

I'm pretty sure he has. He ran a mid 13 at his last 1/4 mile track run.
