View Full Version : Too much oil being registered.

So to start off, my head gaskets will soon need to be replaced. I am going to pull the motor once I have time and replace the HG and Oil Separation Plate.
I recently did an oil change and only put in 4qts into the motor. But my car is dripping tons of oil overtime from the head gaskets and back between the motor and tranny. But no matter how much I lose, when I pull the dipstick it registers that it is way too full on oil.
My car has been losing coolant super fast as well.
Basically, I'm thinking that due to my HG failure all of the coolant is going into my motor which is causing the dipstick to register so high. My question is should I drain out a bit from the oil pan to prevent any damages of too much fluid in there? Or should I leave it to prevent from running just coolant.

Thanks,
Matt

if you have coolant mixed with oil, you should STOP driving your car. Also if you know you have a blown headgasket, sideline her until you can fix it. You run the risk of warping your heads if you overheat your car or get an airpocket trapped. it is a sure way to kill your motor.

I had the oil registering super high issue with my Legacy - wait for the car to cool down and oil to drain down the dipstick tube. Then check it again.

Yeah, that is what I've been trying to do. Car has been running fine though and oil doesn't look milky like coolant is in there. I think ill just do another oil change and see what that does for me.

I only tested the stick after it sat overnight. and it was waaaaay over the "F".

Update: Just drained out a bit of oil and it did not look milky or even watered down. I run 10W40 and the oil still had it's same consistency once I drained it. Guess I'll just have to wait it out and see if the oil on the stick rises over time. This is stumping me, I only put in 4qts when I did the oil change I couldn't have over filled it.

How much oil came out when you drained it?

What does the oil smell like?
Is it thinner than you expected it to be?
Can you see where the coolant is leaking from?

Next time this happens post a pic of the dipstick.
