96 Outback Legacy 5MT compatibility

I recently got a 1996 Outback Legacy with a failing transmission. I had hoped when I got it that it was just the linkage that was the problem but I've been hearing some pretty awful sounds and 4th gear is totally shot.

I located a 1996 legacy (non outback) 5 speed awd Wagon but a local Craigslist subaru mechanic said that it wouldn't be compatible because of different final drive ratios. Is this correct?
What other transmissions would be compatible?

Sorry to start out with my first post as a question, I did search for this but I'm confused by the information I've found that seems to say all the ty75 transmissions are compatible.
I tried to check out the links to different transmission charts but they all have been dead links (possibly because I'm on a phone?)


Anyway thanks for checking out my post and I would appreciate any guidance as it seems my transmission is on it's last legs, it was getting very noisy and difficult to get into gear as of last night.

I believe that is correct - the Outback has a 4.11 FD and most of the EJ22 models besides the OB got 3.9.

I mean, if you'd like lower highway revs, you could certainly swap the rear diff to match, but I'm not sure how you'd address the speed sensor issue due to different diameter tires.

www.cars101.com (http://www.cars101.com) is a good source for info like this. If indeed your Outback uses 4.11FD, then you'd want to look for a manual from a 97-99 Legacy GT.

As far as final drive ratio goes you an use a 96-99 outback, 97-99 legacy gt, 98-02 forester, and 98-01 2.5rs. These I know for sure have 4.11 final drive and will all be hydraulic clutch like yours after these years I'm not certain if the final drive rules subaru used still apply. 99+ transmissions are phase 2 and will require you to swap in your existing speed sensor, and tap the hole for the bottom starter bolt as they no longer have the stud for it to mount. Outback and forester will keep the speedo correct, while the others will read about 10% slower than actual vehicle speed.

03-05 Foresters are 4.11 as well. Not entirely sure about 06-08, but they're likely that as well.
