Hey crew, My old man has a 1990 LS AWD Legacy. 2.2 Trans code is tz102za1aa. I have been searching all morning on multiple sites and have not received a definite answer on the final drive. It APPEARS that it is most likely 4.111 but I need to know for sure. his rear diff started howling, and I have the one out of my 98 2.2 auto that I know is 4.111 that I can swap in if they are ratio compatable.
Thanks in advance!

The first gen will have a sticker on them with the gear ratio. Unfortunately the second gen rear diff isn't a straight swap, the pinion flange is different and the diff has stubs coming from it like the front.

ah Thanks Bratman.. I guess I will just have to hit the pick and pull yard for the stuff the old man needs. Well wait.. Now I have a complete set of rear axles.. Do you know if the pinion flange is just held on with the big ass 32mm nut or whatever and can be swapped? I mean worse case scenario, I swap out the rear section of the drive shaft, and use the spare set of 2nd gen rear axles I have in his car. But if I am just making more work then I need too, I am sure I can get a rear diff for cheap. Maybe I will get them pulled and take a closer look side by side, or get an LSD diff, bearing kit, and swap the final drive over. he has a bearing singing in the rear at highway speed.

Yeah man, swapping the pinion flange would work as well as the 2nd Gen rear axles. I'm 90% sure the 90/91 autos had 4.11 though now that I think about my first gen stuff.

so it is 4.11 vs 4.111? from what I gather the turbo guys are lucky and got the 3.90 like later Rex's had. I will have to see what I can find at the yard. I did not realize the differences between 1st n 2nd gens were as much as they are.

I believe it is, but check the sticker on the diff to be sure. It's right on the back cover, probably covered in grime lol.
