I have a 93 non turbo 2.2l engine. Im looking for the name of the gasket that is behind the crankshaft pulley. Its leaking oil somehow, and i cant find anyone that knows the name of it.

well, yes...but I think he's leaking oil out of the cam seals, personally...

And it all comes out around the timing belt cover.

could be a crank seal out of the oil pump. they leak a lot on scoobs... not nearly as much as cam seals, but I've put in a few dozen in my days.

Ok. I dug into my engine, Took out my rad, took off my timing belt cover. I found my oil leak is indeed behind my crank shaft. But I dont have the knowledge and the tools to re-time my engine. Could anyone give me a "how to replace a gasket for dummies" lesson, or if anyone lives in the PA area can replace it for me for a better price than i have been told, it would be awesome.

get a rapair manual, read it. and stop calling it a gasket, it's not a gasket, it's a seal.

Ah, timing on the 93 is easy. Just line up the marks on the new belt with the marks on the BACK of the cam pulleys.

People get mad to easy. Thanks for the help though.

the marks are on the front of the pullies. the marks on the belt don't really line up with them. If you try, it wont work very well. they're nice for a guidelline though.

i very recently posted a bunch of advice on doing this job. Consider doing your water pump, tbelt, and cam seals while you're in there

the marks on the belt line up perfictly with the marks on the cogs, as long as your belt has them (not all belts do) If they don't line up, you're either doing it wrong or you have a really cheap belt.

my goodyear belt was off by half a tooth on both cams. Caused me a bit of confusion and i counted the teeth off on either side. I think you got lucky sammy.

I've done at least one hundred of them, yours must have been a defect.

what on earth are you talking about?Umm, wasn't there some crazy thing about how there's a difference between the marks on the front of the pulley and the back? or the marks on the block? Maybe I was mistaken.

No need to get in a ****fit, it was just a mistake. Good God...

The confusion is as follows:

There is an arrow mark on the face of the crank sprocket, that when pointing a certain direction, means all pistons are far enough recessed into the cylinders that the cams can be turned any which way without piston-valve contact.

Why they have this on a non-interference engine, I really don't know

Anyhoo, needless to say, if you use that mark to time your engine, your timing will be off, enough where the engine won't run. You need to use the little mark on the crank sensor tooth on the back of the sprocket, that's the correct mark.

Every Subaru guy has used the wrong mark at some point, so don't feel bad if you have

As for the cams, there are also arrows on the spokes of the cam sprockets, whose function I couldn't really tell you. Ignore those completely. Use the little marks on the lip of the cam sprockets.

And no matter what anyone tells you, all you need to do is line up the marks on the timing belt with these three marks, the one on the crank sprocket and the two on each individual cam sprocket. There is NO need to find TDC, there is NO need to count teeth. You can turn your crank and cams completely independent of each other any way you want, as long as you end up lining these marks up. That's all that matters, and that's why it's worth getting a belt that has marks on it (all OEM ones do).

Thanks for clearing up the confusion, Mike
