A US market 1997 Outback would be a BG.
On the car, there is a metal plate on the drivers-side front strut pillar under the hood. On that plate, there is the "Applied Model" code. The chassis code and engine type is the first three characters of that code. In your case, that would be a BG9.
I have a breakdown of almost every applied model code used around the world, that breakdown is located here: https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?17388
There is also this breakdown for chassis codes for US model years only: https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?955

If you are looking for Japanese parts... if it fits/came from any BG (such as a BG5), it will fit your car.
