so on my 01 outback I'm looking to turn off the auto a/c feature when on heater defrost since I have a manual a/c button. does anyone out there know how to disable this option? thanks

Without modifying something, there is no way to disable the AC on defrost. That is to say, there is no button combination or switch to make this happen.

If you wanted to just disable the A/C system completely (without damaging anything), you could just disconnect the A/C clutch wire. There is a connector right on top of the A/C compressor for it. Pull those connectors apart, and you have effectively disabled the A/C system all together.

You do know that the air from the AC clears your windows faster, right? Just making sure that you know that.

Yeah, the AC kicks on to dehumidify the air it blows on the windshield. You could run a relay to the A/C power wire and add a switch inside the car that when flipped disables the AC compressor. would need to make a Normally closed circuit that opens when power is applied. Not too difficult at all.

yeah i know that it helps dry out the air to defrost the window faster but I have a factory a/c button that can turn it on in any mode. so I disconnected the a/c pump and it continuously ran until i plugged the pump back in and it cycled through and shut off then the fan shutoff, I then took out the a/c fuse and the whole heater quit working so I'm going to have to rethink the approach.
