I'm bored at work so I'll make a thread. Now I don't have to use other's threads.

The day I bought it @73K miles. Swapping over my WRX wheels from my old car.

https://scontent-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/v/l/t1.0-9/10360834_749760965081286_1909320772118069759_n.jpg?oh=8899239cdc3851cbfcd3165cc14570e3&oe=557B6F49

After:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/14845162319_8ca5cf038a_c-1.jpg

Interior was pretty clean. Bought it from the OG owner who used it to drive to and from the stables. (Or so I assume, as there was a bunch of hay under the rear seat)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/14850319784_969a85a60c_c-1.jpg

Then I did something:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/10601708_601155550002146_1981128636_n-1.jpg

Then another thing. (A kind of stupid thing at the time. Damn you CL!)

I replaced the audio system (Have to go back and re-wire everything :( )

Painted my winter wheels. SPARKLES!!!! with a coat of glow in the dark paint on top (not pictured)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/81cPjmRjpg1-1.jpg

Then I ordered an OEM bugshield and rear spoiler. (spoiler is not on yet)

Currently I have new Foglights that I tinted yellow, and side markers that I bought from r3v_v3ng3. (A+ seller BTW) I bought a can of black plastidip to refinish the fog covers and match the side markers to the black moldings.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/8Pp7199jpg1-1.jpg

That's all I've done so far IIRC.

Future plans are (in order):

1. BC Racing Coilovers (7K F/R)
2. Replace all gaskets (HG, VCG etc) or possibly do a high compression build using a 251 block.
3. Possibly new headliner (Thinking fabric that looks like the night sky. Stars +moon type deal)

VERY rough MS paint edit of how I picture my car looking this summer.;)

Looks like a good start.

Nice! I'm still considering redoing my door cards but I can't find a material that I like. And also what made you choose 7k rear spring rates? In my opinion that may be a bit stiff for the rear. I know a few guys are running 7k Front 5k Rear, I'm 8k front 6k rear and I think 7k rear might get a little rough and bouncy, although I can't say for sure so take that with a grain of salt.

CaleDeRoo
02-26-2015, 03:39 PM
I regularly hail things in the rear so I just wanted to be safe.

That want my first choice for door cards but i spent less than $10 in materials so I can't complain

Looks really great especially with the STi wheels!

KNaph
02-26-2015, 04:13 PM
Oh okay, yeah that makes sense. I might suggest getting the swift springs to help with comfort for the times you're not carrying anything, and they're just higher quality in general. Also I think the fabric you used works really well with the car. The front seats have the blueish fabric which ties in with the door cards.

Love the silver BBS's.. Even the rex wheels look good, and I think they are hideous on the rex!

Its gonna be sick!!! Are you planning to tint the car?
I like that lip idea, reminds me of the bugeye wrx 3 piece. Its still hard to find a lip for the outback front because of the way the bumper shaped on the bottom

KNaph
03-02-2015, 03:31 AM
Oh wow that actually looks really good, I feel like it needs something down the middle though. Maybe throw those on and then figure something out to add onto it. Is it the Home Depot garage seal thing? I'd hate to steal your idea, but I might have to if I can't come up with my own idea for a lip! maybe you can do something similar with the side skirts too.

I'm thinking attach the Legacy skirts, and then on the bottom of those lay the HD garage seal flat along the bottom and attach them and it might look a bit like a side skirt splitter. Could be cool, could be really ugly.

CaleDeRoo
03-02-2015, 03:50 AM
I don't plan on tinting it at this point.

And KNaph it's essentially the garage seal stuff, although now companies are selling it for auto applications. I planned on doing the front like the picture, then the sides all the way down, and the back to mirror the front.

I have also tossed around the idea of getting Legacy skirts but I'd like to keep my OB mud flaps/guards I think. I just want this cold weather to be over so I can get to work!!!

I had my fun in the snow, but now I'm just so done with this.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/03/78JOyOyjpg1-1.jpg

KNaph
03-02-2015, 04:09 AM
Oh yeah then you're way ahead of me haha. And I wasn't aware that there were alternatives.

I kinda like my OB mud flaps but they don't flex enough for me and I scrape the front ones on a lot of stuff even driving cautiously and I'm not really even that low. I think the car still looks good as is though, Legacy skirts aren't really necessary and I think if you put that stuff on the rocker panels it should hide the pinch weld which is my biggest reason for wanting side skirts.

CaleDeRoo
03-02-2015, 04:20 AM
Way ahead of you? Hell I'm way ahead of myself!

Didn't even think of how the flaps will basically be draggin on the ground...

KNaph
03-02-2015, 04:32 AM
I feel that way all the time about what to do with my car haha.

I've been thinking about a solution to them dragging, basically just chop off the lower inch or so that's just a flat piece and it'll basically avoid all dragging/scraping unless you drive off a curb or something with a drastic drop. Dunno how it'd look though, gotta chop the bottom off and then trim the sides a bit to round it out to look factory again.

CaleDeRoo
03-02-2015, 04:43 AM
Is that bottom piece plastic, or molded into the rest of the mud flap? I never looked at it closely but I just always assumed it was a rubber extension.

KNaph
03-02-2015, 04:59 AM
It's all one piece of plastic so it's relatively rigid. Another idea is to just heat up the lower portion and bend it backwards a bit. It looks like mine is bent backwards in that picture from just hitting bumps and stuff, but I can't say for sure. Could just be like that from factory.

Working overnights is hard on the wallet. Just bought 25ft of this stuff

So I tried dropping the body as strait down as I could as I'm trying to estimate what size spacers I'll want. Will the wheels sink in a little more due to the car being lower, or no? I plan on running a little camber in the front.

Personally I would do the Bridgestone also, it just evens out the look a bit more. Did a quick little photoshop in case you needed a little help imagining it.

KNaph

Kinda looks like an '05 STI V-Limited front lip.
Can't really tell 100% but that's my best guess.
173
Using one of these would probably require some modification. I would imagine you gotta chop the center ridge off so that it doesn't push the lip downwards leaving a gap.

That's one of the lips I'm considering, also this style for the winglets on the ends.
174

But the center portion being recessed might look kinda goofy on an OB bumper.

CaleDeRoo
03-19-2015, 06:59 AM
You're right it does look like the v-limited lip. I wish I could get better pictures of the white OB because at least in that picture it looks really good.

I might buy one for the hell of it even though I already have 3 rolls of EZ-lip. I wouldn't be butthurt about cutting up a $50 replica lip

KNaph
03-19-2015, 08:49 AM
Yeah they're cheap on Ebay so it's not really a big deal to cut it up.
Might even be able to stack the EZ-lip underneath it to give it a more pronounced look.

Put my summers on today. Check clearances to try to figure out what size spacers to order. Still unsure on that, since I don't want extended studs, but to go big enough to get spacers with studs in them already might be too much...

I plan on running a couple degrees of camber in the front to tuck. What's everyone's thoughts on spacer size? I can get more pics if needed in a couple days. I'd also rather not modify the wheels to clear the nuts on the spacers, since the BBS wheels really don't have any cavities in the back. So does anyone by any chance know the length of the stock studs?

Instead of cutting off that section, find a Legacy (non-OB) at a Junkyard with flaps. The Legacy's didn't have that lower section, would bolt right on and look factory!

Just upgrade to Rally Armors. Buy the generic ones for like 20 bux, then pull off the stockers, trace the holes onto the new flap, and then bolt them on with supplied Rally Armor hardware.

About 50 so far. Gonna need to raise the back if I can. Is it tough?

KNaph
04-26-2015, 12:23 AM
Kinda tough with the weight of the suspension pulling on it. Make sure that you clean the threads thoroughly before you make any adjustment, something to blow the road dirt and stuff off. Brake clean might be too aggressive.

Loosen the bottom collar and then spin the spring assembly down into the bottom bracket. Pretty straight forward but make sure you aren't adjusting the spring preload.

The wrenches wreak havoc on your hands so I would grab a rod/bolt anything that fits in the hole at the end of the wrench and pull on that. Also use the jack to support a little bit of the suspension weight. Jack it up by the brake heat shield, that's what I did.

CaleDeRoo
04-26-2015, 01:11 AM
I figured it'd be easy to raise it since the weight would be pulling down. Oh well I'll find out in the morning.

Looking good so far. The wing is gonna give the car a whole different look afterwards. The tint looks pretty good too but I'm partial to the no tint look. And make sure you go a bit bigger on the holes you drill for the wing so you have more room for adjustment. And dont go too heavy if you use auto sealant, cause I used a little too much and my wings never gonna come off now lol.

CaleDeRoo

I agree. Any 3rd gen Outback and GT would have those skirts. I would expect they would need some modification to fit a 2nd gen nicely, but they should be pretty close as they are.

Pretty far from there actually haha, but I've never seen or heard anything about that car, I wish the 5x100 marquis promadas came in a lower offset.

And 25mm is gonna be fun to fit haha. I did a slight roll on the front fenders, the lip is angled up 45* at some spots and even more right around the center. It pushed the fender liner up a couple mil but there's still a small bump that hangs down, I don't think I've rubbed on it yet though, mostly just my flaps.

Valve cover gaskets are leaking real bad, and head gaskets are not in great shape. I just wanna do them all in addition to timing belt and new exhaust.

meepers
07-16-2015, 09:49 AM
I vote OEM. And the valve cover gaskets, well that might be a Giant pain in the ass as there are 3 different revisions of valve covers that all have different gaskets. I actually trimmed a part off my gaskets to make a different style work. When I built my motor, I ordered a subie 255 factory full gasket kit, and it came with nearly everything including half a dozen rear main seals lol. But it was not cheap.

CaleDeRoo
07-17-2015, 05:40 AM

Aww That is sad to hear! It is unfortunate that 3 of my 4 Leggy wagons I bought BECAUSE they were blown up. Spin a bearing or what happened? The nice thing is you should have a P2 block which lends itself nicely to STI/WRX 2.5l Takeoff parts. Have you inspected the Carnage yet? The 99 I bought for its shell, lost the right side in such a catastrophic failure that it grenaded the right head plastic Timing gears, tore the teeth off the timing belt, and I am sure killed a bunch of valves and possibly pistons. But that bottom end is going to basically be turned into an open deck ej255 backup motor for if I ever kill my real 255!

CaleDeRoo
07-29-2015, 03:05 PM
Cam and crank seals decided to dump all the oil out. I've sourced a few 251 blocks. So for a high CR build I should go for 257 gaskets?

meepers
07-29-2015, 06:39 PM
I wish I was the best person to answer that... I was lucky to get guidance when ordering my gaskets so I did not have issues. I am using 06 ej255 Bottom end, 98 EJ25d Heads, ej255 Complete gasket set and a VF48. Basically a high compression boost ride. I dont remember off the top of my head, but I think my CR is right around the 9.1/1 range.. but I also broke my squash, so without going back through my notes do not quote me on that. And I know my heads were surfaced as well when I had them gone through.

I'm assuming without pistons? I've been thinking about getting my block machined and getting new pistons etc. My HG should be fine to re-use if the engine only ran for 45 minutes or so right?

KNaph

Been a while since I caught up on your build. Sucks on the high comp motor, but it seems like you've got good plans going on regardless.

I don't remember if you ever got those endlinks, but once you get the new motor in and running good you should definitely try aftermarket endlinks and those lockdown bolts, the car feels incredible. I would even try to do it in stages, rear endlinks, front endlinks, then lockdown bolts to see what had the biggest impact, seems like that would be a fun test.

CaleDeRoo
09-05-2015, 12:53 AM

Glad you are back on track! I am currently stuck in between dumping more money to get the auto to work correctly.... or the Fun fun task of doing my 5 speed swap/subframe spacer removal. I have a part coming today.. If that doesnt solve my issue of only having 3rd gear... then I am goint to send my 5speed starter out to be rebuilt.... then yank all the hard parts off for a glorious 2 day swap.

I have to admit though.. I do like driving a quiet car, that I can see around people in. I do not however like that I am unable to get out of anyones way. The joys of being grown up. lol. Looking good tho man!

chevyman1968
10-08-2015, 10:40 PM
Yeah the 251 gaskets will bump the compression more. Just as a heads up with them. Make sure you let the car warm up before you do any form of hard driving. It's a single layer steel gasket and it will be touchier and not as forgiving as a MLS gasket. Esp during the winter although I am really picky about letting my car warm up. I let it sit for 5-10 mins in the winter since that's about how long it takes me to clock out. My machinist recommended that I let it warm up about that long to help keep from warping the aluminum. Anyways, rabbit trail there but all that to say. If you beat on it cold you will skyrocket your chances of having to pull it back out. Your compression ratio should be about 11ish to 1 with that setup. 86bratman Shannon do you remember the exact numbers from when we ran them a couple years ago?

I'm wanting to say it was 10.9:1, but that's been a while since we were talking that build over. I have a deep distrust of that style gasket though even on 251s, every one I put back together gets sti gaskets. I did discover recently that subaru themselves switched the sohc ej25 to a MLS gasket in the 5th gen legacy as we've been looking at them as an alternative to the wife's fusion.

Alphius
10-09-2015, 10:27 AM
The EJ251 gaskets are poor, but they'll last alright and usually only seep oil and coolant externally when they fail.
I always use the 257 STI gaskets on every SOHC EJ25 I put together. Haven't had one fail yet.

I'm in the same position, I want a 3 spoke wheel but not really that keen on losing the airbag. We'll see though, I might just bite the bullet and buy the OMP wheel that I've wanted and lose the airbag...
The main reason why I want to swap is just cause the factory wheel is huge and it's hard to drive aggressively with a school bus wheel.

Curious what the wheels are...
What middle man service did you end up using?

Good guess for sure, but not quite it. I went out on a limb with these wheels and I'm not 100% how they'll look. I should have bought a strut brace through him too. There were a couple basic Cusco ones for under $10.

Shut down my car today because it appears to be puking oil out of the rear main seal. Guess that's what happens when you put together an engine while working full time and going to class 25hrs a week. I don't want to take the engine out again so I think I'll try getting my car on a lift and dropping the tranny instead.

Brought the car home the other day and have driven it 50 miles or so. Runs great. Unfortunately I have some electrical issue regarding the headlights. Only the drivers side light works and the high beam indicator on the dash is always on. So I can't even take my car to work until I fix that.

The driver's side like works like normal. I can switch the beam off and on, however the indicator on the dash is always lit, which I'm sure if making it so I can't turn the fogs on. The passenger side headlight doesn't work at all.

Nice Outback dude! I'm moving up to Rochester in a week - heard the winters are pretty brutal. Got any rust prevention advice?

Is your car rust free? Honestly there really isn't much you can do. You could pay for undercoating, you could spray the car with oil, or make sure you wash the underside often.

Also the winters here are totally unpredictable. Which area will you be moving to? You should PM when you get here.

EDIT: Just realized you have an '05. If it has the same factory undercoating as my mom's '06 you shouldn't have to worry about rust much as all. A little surface rust on some things underneath but nothing that'll destroy the car.

I'm moving to the NOTA (I think that's what it's called). Saw a bunch of Subarus when we were up there to visit/find a place/job.

Good to know about the factory undercoating. I'm still getting accustomed to the BL/BP platform. I'm going to undercoat my Jeep but that's significantly more apt to rust.

I'll be up there this week. I'll hit you up. Any updates to the BG?

Ah The Arts Disctrict (That's what I've heard it referred to, but it looks NOTA is also correct) Only updates being I'm ready for my second oil change since the engine went back in, I need to check my exhaust gaskets because I have a leak somewhere, and my speedo dies randomly when I'm on the brakes.

Also took my cross bars and fork mounts off, but I think I prefer the look with them on as it gives the illusion of forward rake.

Have you done anything with the fender liners? I ended up having to make custom Z clips to hold my fender liners up because my fenders were rolled flat and even with those clips, my tires are eating a hole through them.

I think if you go a little lower you might have to start worrying about those, but you should do it anyways because front rake is the best look.

CaleDeRoo
06-03-2016, 01:31 AM
I've done absolutely nothing with the fenders/liners at all. I've narrowly avoided having to roll with this setup.

If I do drop it I'll have to hit you up for info on those clips.

Also just a thought... would it be possible to hit the liners with a heat gun and stretch them a bit to clear the tires?

I think I only touch the liners on larger bumps right now

KNaph
06-03-2016, 05:03 PM
The clips are pretty easy, kinda ghetto, but they work decently. They would probably work better if I didn't wait until I had holes in my liners to put them on.

I used heavy duty hose clamps, but you could use some relatively heavy gauge sheet metal and cut them up so they're wider. Just cut strips of themy about an inch wide and about 3-4" long. Then just replicate the Z clip that holds the fender liner to the car from factory. I'll draw something up when I get to a computer.

And yeah, I've tried heat gunning my liners, it helps a bit, but you're gonna need a few extra hands to stretch it properly, otherwise it'll warp and end up having one part higher but till stick another part even lower. The issue on my car isn't really the inner portion of the liner, it's where the liner connects to the fender that rubs. My best solution was the Z clips.

If you heat gun them you should be able to eliminate all your rubbing at this height. It should only be the outer 3rd of the liner that's rubbing because there's a little bubble thing from factory. Just make sure you don't stretch too far or the liner gets kind of weak too.

It's a Kienzle 1016 BT (BT meaning bluetooth)

If I had any complaint it would be the color of the back lighting being red. There's a couple knockoffs with green lighting though I can't seem to remember where I've seen them. Oh and it's also in German, but that can be changed.

https://www.amazon.de/Kienzle-Autoradio-Bluetooth-CD-Laufwerk-Einbautiefe/dp/B00F3D2RI2

Aux/BT/USB/SD compatible, and also does half frequencies just incase your station isn't quite coming in clear enough you can make those half way adjustments.

Ex: 94.1 isn't coming in too clear? Try 94.05 or 94.15. I found this out by accident.

No I won't be trimming the bumper. At eye level it's hardly noticeable and I'll have to remove it for winter anyways. No way it'd make it through the whole season.

The wheels have grown on me, but the paint has proved to be very weak (chipped off around some of the lug nuts), so instead of selling i'll probably give them to my mom for her SWP '06 Legacy. Unless someone else wanted them, but I'd be shocked if I could get more than $400 or so with the paint how it is. Can't wait to get my BBS powdercoated.

I still have parts that never made it one as well like Audi end links (like Kyle) and NIB window visors. The more I think about it the more EG swap sounds like a better idea than financing a S2000 or NC2 Miata (cheaper overall). EG33, headers, etc? Think it can be done for under $2K?

KNaph
10-26-2016, 01:42 AM
I've fumbled with the idea a bit, debating between building the EJ22e-T vs just a simple EJ20g or the EG33.

From what I've read quite a few guys made the EG33 swap work for around the $2,000 mark, but a lot of it was doing custom fabrication, cutting out the core support and welding in another plate, stuff like that just to get clearance for the radiator.
I don't think it's entirely necessary to cut it out but you've got to mount the rad in front of the core support, no way it'll fit otherwise. I think stock headers work, wiring is what it is, take your time and DIY or have a relatively quick turnaround and have someone else do it. If you want to keep it a daily car though, I did a few things about setting up the heater core and A/C but it was kind of wishy washy. Some said that routing for the heater was pretty easy, some said they couldn't do it.

I think an EG33 swap would be so badass. The sound and powerband are pretty raw, those are the things that draw me to it so much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7IPo6jmn-8

It's our cars RallyX cousin.

You can get a little peak at the engine bay in this car just to get an idea of what it physically looks like in the engine bay.
Looks like they just made a flat rad support bar, drilled holes in the existing core support and bolted the new support bar in, seems kind of tight but the fabrication doesn't really have to be anything more than cut, drill then bolt up. Seems like they retained the bumper beam and stuff, hood latches are a requirement so if you've got to get locking latches if you live in an area with assholes nearby.

CaleDeRoo
10-26-2016, 06:29 AM
I've got no problem modifying the core support. I think even with paying someone to do the wiring I could hit the $2K mark. Although it would be SOOO hard not to tear into the engine just for inspection, but that would drive the cost up quite substantially. I'd also probably not be satisfied with the stock headers knowing that I could probably make my own. The only issue is I just put $1200-1500 in completely rebuilding the 25D. And I hope that I can mitigate the knock so I can sell some parts to recoup some cash. I'm sure I could find a buyer for my rebuilt heads, STi crank (if it doesn't get too damaged) pistons, new oil pump etc. I think think I could hit under 2k if I could get $5-600 from various parts of the 25D.

How could I NOT try to make my own long tubes after hearing this

thedeadhp

It would be totally awesome! If you still have all of your stock parts you could part with some of the aesthetic bits and sell your aftermarket ones. That would turn a decent project, but I wouldn't stress about it too much until it gets bad. We have leggys come into the dealership with BAD knock that have been doing it for 50k+ miles.

Just looked at the site and nothing about the EG33. They did mention OBDII but you'd probably have to contact them. Prices look to be $700 and up.

Yeah I'll have to email them when I get into work on Sunday night. I'll let you know what they tell me I'll post it here.

IWire replied saying they will only attempt it if a standalone ecu is supplied. Yeah not looking to spend $1500+ on the wiring

Small, if somewhat meaningless update. I had my BBS wheels powder coated. I wanted to do it last year but never got around to it so I wanted to make sure I did it this year.

They are a light gray (think Nardo Gray, but slightly lighter) with a machined outer circumference/lip. I wanted darker gray but once I got them on the car I loved them. The lip isn't very noticeable in sunlight but you immediately know something is different about them.

Pictures don't really do them justice, and I'm a total believe in powdercoat these babies are SMOOTH

Should be getting plates for the SVX this week. I'll take the engine out of the Outback soon. Still haven't decided if I'm going to use the SVX ecu/harness or go EJ20 ECU + standalone.

I will probably get my BBS wheels refurbished when I need tires again. But that likely won't be for a few years.
