Hah, I made one of those a few days ago, posted photos in my MR1. It's funny how a $15 DIY power supply outperforms my old $80 commercially available one.

VERY TRUE~~~!!!! and it cost me next to nothing only thing i had to buy were the alligator clips and a switch(which i will solder in eventually) and having the availability of multiple voltage and Amp sources is really nice.

One of my favorite sets of pictures of my baby.... these actually really old but still relevant. Near and old abandoned house built by one random guy on another persons land but never torn down. Odd thing. She didn't have any mods in this picture hadn't even really been thinking about mods just driving her around these back roads with a friend alot at the time.

sadly they have all been different engines... Instead of replacing the HG(which I had Agile do on a motor that threw a rod bearing 5 days later and another motor that just decided oil+radiator = fun after 3 months(evergreen headgaskets) I've just gotten low mileage jdm motors... I'm hoping this time to mill the heads and do head gasket job myself and call it a day till next year.... the heater core because car has almost 200k... and rather do it now than wait for it to go bad and freeze.... I've just got terrible luck lol

There is no such thing, unless you are Yamazaki.. Heh.

Most of the "under 70,000km" JDM engines sold in the US have many many many more miles on them than that.. The importers don't have a problem with outright lying about miles, and it has been well documented that they don't care.

Something to add to this is the number of damaged cars from the tsunami in 2011. Most of those cars/engines made their way overseas.

Car has been back up and running for a few weeks now. Hardly have anytime to work on her between everything that is going on. Here is a recent picture of her. Still quite dirty. Also picked up some tires from WPEC hopefully will get a chance to throw them on before I get the snowflakes back on for the winter. "new" tires will be going on the snowflakes as well. Picked up some charms from Yamazaki will have pictures of their placement soon.

Thanks everyone!!! Made some more progress. Picking up a bumper and got a new set of shoes. Had a minor fender bender in the snow a few months back. May need to replace a control arm and ball joint but nothing cosmetic other than needing a new rim lol. Hit the curb pretty hard doing like 10 in the black ice.... for the time being it drives just fine. getting SUPER tired of my grinding transmission and squeaks. The Rays wheels look awesome on your car - they definitely suit the 2nd gen very well.

Cant wait to start. Hopefully picking up a 5mt drive shaft and pedal assembly soon!

5 speed swap will be the first stage! Engine will be pulled out to have shortblock rebuilt for reliability(and boost).

Once its finished it'll go back in and both cars will get gutted. Its a process but I will keep you all posted!

05-29-2016, 03:05 AM
Picked up my 5mt drive shaft, 5mt pedal assembly, 5mt shift knob, 5MT shifter surround, woodgrain vent for dash on a whim(lucky for me since my original one just broke), some extra gt fogs (I hoard them Ill admit it) and all hardware needed.

Just need an NSS now and maybe a Reverse switch but I think I can reuse that from the AT Tranny!

Will be posting pictures as I make progress!

Hinyo
06-02-2016, 07:44 PM
Made some more progress. Put the car up on jack stands. Invested in a car port. Planning the tranny pull for this Friday.

Is it bad that I just want to do it on my own? lol so many friends have offered. I just don't trust them all with wrenches on my car

Hinyo
06-04-2016, 10:05 AM
Made some more progress.. Sorry for not posting pictures yet. A bit lazy atm. lol but I have tons.

Rear diff and drive shaft are pulled exhaust is pulled. Down pipe, radiator, and intercooler have been removed. (all in 1 day)

Transmission is ready to drop as well. Just being held on by ground and support.

Still need to remove shifter assy but that's not so bad.

As well as make some drive-shaft clearance but Ill get it done.

Going to borrow a harbor freight low lift trans jack and get the job done

I think that will be it for this weekend.

Would start work on Lucy but have a few things to take care of for my business. Might need some help with that hefty auto trans not looking forward to it. lol

Anyone have insight for the wiring of the VSS and NSS? as well as tricking the ECU and TCU. I found a couple links already but never hurts to have too much info.

98legwag
06-04-2016, 10:11 AM
Ask Tim about the wiring for the VSS and NSS and the ECU/TCU. He has done that on his car and a friend's car.

Hinyo
06-06-2016, 10:31 AM
So I got the transmission out on Saturday quite the struggle and learning experience. If someone tells you to empty the trans first... just do it buy the T65 and just do it

Besides that. Using the steering to pull the axles from the trans is really helpful.

Used a harbor freight jack and another jack to help with the lifting and positioning I needed

Manual trans is actually much lighter than I was expecting.

I'll be starting the transmissions swap this Friday. Ill keep you guys posted!

Starting to gut the donor now!

06-06-2016, 06:29 PM
Hey man I know your prolly busy swapping things but that impreza your ran into looks like a limited! It had the fancy red subaru calipers with raised lettering! Please tell me you got the whole car?!

98legwag
06-06-2016, 10:21 PM
It has unpainted mirrors. As I discussed with Hinyo, I think its a WRX TR. All 06-07 WRXs had the 4/2 pots.

Hinyo
06-06-2016, 10:35 PM
Yeah I got the whole car! No worries there!

Wont be using the 4 Pot/ 2 Pot setup they will be for sale soon!

Already have plenty of braking power from my brake upgrades I did before the swap.

Picked up some other goodies for the swap today. I'll put them on once the swap is completed

Hinyo
06-14-2016, 11:34 AM
In other news.

Auto Transmission is out!

Swapped over the axles from the WRX. 98 Legacy Axles from the auto are NOT the same as the 2007 WRX axles. One is a male type one is a female type.

Went much easier than I thought it would.

Swapped over the speed sensor for the time being as well. Had to break the plastic speed sensor from the 07 to put the metal one from the 98. Not sure the they changed the material. Would have preffered it in metal.

I was going to go without it but id rather not have the car in limp mode.

Trans and diff are in place.

Clutch is in.

Things still left to do?

Pedal assembly.

Lift trans and diff into place

NSS and REV wiring

bolt the manual starter in

Still a ways to go but its progress!

Ill keep you guys posted

Still no pictures. Maybe soon. Trans is in and seated

Diff is in.

Need to fill everything with fluids.

Things left to do are: Slave Cylinder. pedal assembly, starter, wiring.

Need a new shiftier circlip otherwise good to go.

Hinyo
06-21-2016, 07:01 PM
Learned A valuable lesson.

Be very careful when installing and removing axles. Ill have to replace an axle seal now *head desk*

Have to drain the trans again to fix the seal since I found out while I was filling it...

07 WRX slave cylinder + legacy slave are not the same. Interferes with the throttle assembly.

I'll be able to use the wrx slave once I finish the swap though.

Filled everything with fluids.

Starter is in

Pedal assembly is in.

I think I'm going to let the trans leak at least till I get it home. Tired of it sitting in my friends driveway.

*fingers crossed* find a junkyard slave and getrdun tomorrow. If not it will be finished and home next week and ill order the trans seal just finish it all at once.

Reuben
06-30-2016, 06:38 PM
Oh god, axle seals... You will need to lookup the service manual procedure on you to set the diff preload, as the thing that houses the seal also sets the load.

Hinyo
07-01-2016, 02:17 PM
So updates.

VSS is wired
NSS is wired
Reverse is wired.

Just need to ground pin 81 and put in 1 more bolt than I should be good to drive it. (at least a little bit)

Still need to repair the axle seal

Hinyo
07-05-2016, 12:26 PM
5 spd swap complete ish...

Axle seal repaired

Car runs drove it home in limp mode.

ABS light is on
CEL is on P1507 and another related code

Need to attach pin 82 to the NSS and ground the other side than hopefully Ill be good to go!

Also adjust the TPS because when it wasn't completely in limp mode it was TERRIBLE off and on throttle

Might also need to bleed the brakes the have been quite squishy since the swap not sure why

Also need to remove the tone rings on the wrx axles.

Well conflabit all!

Almost 100% sure I fried the ecu...

Went to fix the P1507 today. Wired from ecu pin 82 to NSS and grounded other side of NSS to Starter ground.

Pretty sure eithier back current fed into ecu and killed it or it fed back current because of wrong year NSS. Need to get a pre 05 nss.

OBD2 Port shows no connection to ECU but ecu light is on when key is in on position. Cranks infinitely. Great....

Hopefully get a few ECUs a main relay some sbf2 fuses and track this sucker down...

Lucy im sorry ill figure it out promise

Could my spare ECU (04 FXT w/EJ255) help you out at all?

Once I finish the swap it might be but for now I got 2 ecu's from the junkyard one from a 97 and one from a 98 and an NSS out of a 3rd gen. So hopefully later today Ill plug in the ecu's and have an update.

Not guna ground to the starter anymore. EVER

Hinyo

5 out of 6 of the flares dont leak. Need to finish the least one and bleed the brake system.

Figured out what was wrong. Make sure you have the right couplers when replacing harlines.

Drove the car around today and love it as a manual.

Had a mechanic friend take a look at it.

Needs a new pressure plate(heavy ass clutch) and input shaft bearing. Whines pretty bad in 5th gear.

But I'm happy!

Update on wrx swap

Changed my mind in terms of interior swap. I think I'm just going to have Iwire do a harness merge for me. Not committed to the idea of cutting more holes in the fire wall + more downtime. Pull the dash once. Send it out for the harness merge while the engine is being built plug it all in and on my way!

That's pretty cool that you can just send the loom off to get merged! Makes the process pretty accessible to anyone who can pull a motor out!

Bug guard was broken while trying to fix the hood latch. It works now perfectly.

I don't mind the bug guard less look but It def has to come back!

Part Number in case anyone wants it

Hood Deflector / Bug Shield is a direct fit for the following:

1995-1999 Subaru Legacy
1995-1999 Subaru Outback

Well....

More updates.

Got the Block torn down. Took it to a shop and its getting built. Should be done by the end of the week.

Trans noise is coming from transfer bearings so that will get sorted once I pull the subframes out.

Found a "99" SUS at the junkyard but its actually a 98 So Wiring harness should be going out this week.

I'll be gone for 2 weeks in europe so no updates while I'm away but hopefully once I'm back it can all come together pretty quickly!

I currently have 2 Perrin EL headers in my garage and a Ported and Polished OEM turbo header. Either of those options would work well here, but shipping out to you would probably be a bit expensive. Plus, I still have dreams of having a use for each one (just haven't let reality set in fully yet).

Engine is timed and ready to drop in.

Just need to put the block of plates on the heads.

WELP! Lucy is eithier calling for or complaing about the swap. Gave up at a light the other day.

Found out what the misfire code was about. Seems the timing belt stripped itself on something. I MIGHT re-time it and just drive it otherwise Ill have it towed and start gutting it for the swap.

Setbacks suck. Motor will likely need to be pulled again.

On the bright side. I am learning ALOT about turbo motors.

Hinyo
06-21-2017, 03:22 PM
So it took a while but she is back on the road.

Had the heads rebuilt Supertech valves.

And than had to pull it again ito have valves adjusted.

Has a few leaks I am currently chasing but is otherwise good to go.

A bit paranoid while driving

Also got around to installing my exhaust.

Blitz Nur Spec Type R.

I will be ordering a silencer probably but anything is better than the open DP I had before.

Friend was nice enough to help me extende the mid pipe with some stainless.

Hinyo
07-10-2017, 07:35 AM
I have about 700 miles on the engine now.

Tune is for the 29th of July. Got my base map pulled a TON of boost and timing out feels nice though. Fixed all the leaks. Oil/coolant etc. Turned off all the light except the airbag light I still need to figure out. Might have to pull the dash to fix the heater core and blower motor controller but we shall see. All in all very happy to drive it. Much more comfortable.

Might need to sort some suspensions noises but the brakes are all good to go now after figuring out dust shield noise and replacing seized calipers.

Wow. Its already been about a year since my swap.

Still a few things to sort out. Mainly need to swap the spindle to the correct type for the tone ring and the airbag light.

Otherwise just doing some Boxerfest prep for this year.

Stay tuned for pictures. Lots of goodies getting installed!
