Braap's Broken 'Back
1998 Subaru Outback
Ej25d - 5 speed manual

I picked this panty dropper up Jan 2nd 2015. 235,000 miles service records and needing nearly nothing I gave my $850 over to the gentleman and drove home. There was a MAF code present and an ABS light, no big deal. I changed the oil and drove the car for about a month without issue put almost 3,000 miles on it that month. Randomly, a brake caliper fell off approaching a stop sign. It was replaced and I trudged on. I noticed a loss in power when warm. Compression test came back in good health and I scanned again for codes. Knock sensor, egr along with MAF sensor. All easy repairs and I was happy. Cleaned the knock sensor contact point, egr valve and MAF sensor, no more engine light. Repairs costed me $7, not to shabby. 3 or so days later, backing into my parking spot in my driveway I lost reverse. What fun is it to loose reverse when you can't drive forward. Currently the car is sitting in the exact spot where reverse was lost, new transmission is going in Thursday.

Plans?

Plans are to get issues sorted first then Forester struts and springs with a 2 inch spacer. Bushings all around, 215/75 General Grabber AT2s, bumpers roof rack and lights! Original plans were 04' STI struts and lower the car, but I realized its a damm Outback.

So many blue Outbacks and I can't find one around that's being parted. Its quite sad!

I do think the blue is one of the best.

Sweet, another deep sapphire pearl! Personally my favorite factory color from Subaru.

Seems like you've been a member longer than me, chances are you may have come across anothernord's build thread, but if you haven't his Outback is lifted and completely rad, so you can probably learn a lot from his build thread.

If almost every WRX is WRB, I'm fine with a hoard of blue backs!

I've read his thread a few years back. I went into a small Subaru hiatus and bought an E36 M3 and a B5 S4. Fun times just not for me!

why'd you end up swapping the engine? what transmission went in?

I bought the engine for $100 guy claimed it was good. I bought it and figured I'd see what's up. So I spent the afternoon swapping, I notice the power loss immediately, I'll most likely swap back this weekend.

Same transmission just different one.

well the ej22 is more reliable even with less power. id still keep it for the time being. consider using it for a hybrid turbo build in the future. =)

Its an absoute dog, 3rd gear up 5th gear hills. I am researching ej22 turbo builds. I'd like a very low boost. 2.5 heads low compression, peak about 5lbs build.

Personally, the ej22 is fine for me 99% of the time. But I hated life when I drove my wagon across the country and drove through the Rocky Mountains.....

High altitude + hills = bad day with 2.2

Yup. It was floored and would only go about 40-45 mph up the mountains.

Highest the car will ever see is just under 7,000ft. I also carry what is practically a rolling garage in the trunk. From PB plaster to torches, the unexpected happens a lot to me. I know the car isn't supposed to be quick by any means, but damn I now know what it feels like to be passed by a Prius. I can quite comfortably boost my motor for well under $2k. If I could get 200hp I'd be a happy hippo.

Picked up a new daily driver. 05' OBS, I'm not sure if I am going to sell the Outback or not. I may finish and sell, who knows.
