View Full Version : 4th Generation Sedan (BL) fwa's '08 Legacy 3.0R Limited - A new beginning

Well, I finally got something newer. The wagon was really starting to show its age and was no longer reliable. I was originally looking for a third gen of some flavor, either a Baja Turbo or an H6 Outback but between the known issues with that gen turbo engine and the outback only coming with beige interior I settled on a 4th gen. Again, wanting more power but also not wanting turbo issues there was really only one option. The 3.0R Limited.

Niiiice, not a bad upgrade I have to say: 2nd gen ---> 4th gen facelift :thumbleft:

fwa2500
03-08-2015, 11:17 PM
Not to mention the jump from a 2.2 H4 putting out 135hp (when new, supposedly) to a 245hp 3.0 H6 with a small mountain of torque. This thing is like a rocket ship in comparison and I love it. It is also considerable more fuel efficient than my wagon has become.

Hey now, all you had to do with the H6 Outback is swap the interior out. And that job is really easy and totally not a pain in the ass. /sarcasm

Hahah, seriously though these 4th gen 3.0 Legacies are really nice looking. Congrats on the new purchase!

Very nice. You and I did the same upgrade except both my cars are a year newer. I highly recommend a Tribeca FSB and a bigger RSB with reinforcement brackets on the 3.0R. The mounting brackets for the RSB on the 4th gen are pretty weak and can bend easily with an upgraded RSB.

Oh and since your car should have the Bilstiens, lowering springs will be limited. The Bilstiens have a different front top hat from the GT KYB struts. Some springs are designed for one or the other. All will bolt on to both sets, but the front may sit higher or lower depending on which the springs are designed for and used on. From what I have read, the springs people like most for the Bilstiens are the JDM pinks and Swifts. There is good info on legacygt.com, but that site can be kind of similar to Nasioc with the way people respond.

I used to be on there but I left a few years ago after a new moderator pulled some BS and stole a FAQ that I put together without crediting me, unpinned my topic and locked it...I was starting to look into going aftermarket with the suspension again, but whatever I end up doing is still a long ways down the road, I have other things that I need to take care of first (and it is kinda nice having a comfortable car again).

=) yay for the new car. hopefully you aren't planning on letting the old girl go?

Unfortunately that is likely what will happen. I need to see first how much the repair on it will cost before I decide if I will sell it or part it out, but that is yet to be determined.

Sad that my USDM broskie for beast may be no more, that BK and my BG are what kicked off our friendship all those years ago. But onwards and upwards, you've picked a bloody nice replacement, I fricken adore the EZ's! Don't worry, Beast is in no danger of going anywhere, and you'll def be given the keys when you finally come say hi!

I'd love to see this thing continue on with someone else that can give it the love it needs (maybe even swap it!), parting out is the last resort...and to be pedantic, I think X-Plane started it all....holy shit, what has it been, nearly 12 years now? It looks like I joined the .org in '04 but I can't remember if there was time before that. Ah, memories...

Put in LED license plate bulbs in last night

When I did that it was a nightmare. I kept dropping the LED in the compartment for the bulb. Once it was done and I got used to how bright the LEDs were I was pleased.

fwa2500
03-20-2015, 10:49 AM
LEDs are almost all in, low/high are done, license plate lights are done and I have the indicator bulbs. I'm still not thrilled with the performance of the projectors, there wasn't as much of a performance boost over the halogens as I was hoping for (not near as much as with my friend's 2015 WRX)...but holy balls the high beams are like turning on two mini-Suns on the front of the car :lolz: I also swapped the fogs to yellow bulbs as I have grown to like them on the wagon. I'm just waiting on the controller to arrive before swapping the turn indicators over as well. I ordered a unit that will allow for one tap indication (one tap=3 flashes along with several other functions) like you find on lots of modern Euro cars. I'm not sure if I will swap the tails to LED or not, they are pretty solidly bright as is, I'm also torn on doing the interior lights and door puddle lights.

What LED kits did you go with for the lows and highs?

They are both the 80W bulbs from NewBrights on Amazon, they highs are great but I think I'm going to switch the lows to HIDs and return the H7 LEDs, I think the lack of performance is due to the LED unit being better suited to reflector housings as opposed to projectors.

Have these for map lights, one panel for each side: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331086497423
Two of these panels for the main dome light: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231112786654 and two more5 panels in the trunk(bright enough, no need for LED strips or anything).
Some basic LEDs for door lights.

fwa2500
03-27-2015, 04:31 PM
I had most of the internal lights in the wagon converted to LEDs, the warm white I had in the dome lights were fine, but I just wasn't a fan of the cool white on the interior.

fwa2500
04-07-2015, 11:36 AM
On Friday I swapped the reverse lights over to LEDs, love the result, Saturday I tried putting LED switchback bulbs in the front corners and blew a couple fuses, so I think I'm just going to go back to normal bulbs for the turn signals. I think the slower flash suits a Japanese car better anyway (ze Germans can keep their crisp LED turn signals...). Yesterday I swapped the brake lights to LEDs, those I like a lot.

So as it turns out the HID bulb bases on the new-style Morimoto bulbs are *JUST* too long to clear the caps. Grrrrr...Back to halogens until I can figure something out, might order a pair of DDM bulbs as those still have the traditional bulb base style. I will also be going back to standard bulbs for the turn signals, just not feeling the LEDs there, I'm currently looking for some of those mirror-coated ones but haven't found any that have decent reviews yet. Next up: tyres, I keep going back and forth between a couple different ones but will likely get the same model Hankooks I have on the JDM wheels from last summer.

What dash cam did you go with and did you hard wire it?

And what "TapTurn" module did you use?

Few questions.

What dash cam did you go with and did you hard wire it?

I got one of these (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F2GMUPU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3EOB49LGWP1FK&coliid=IA0FQ9X5FNWUR&psc=1) cheapies from Amazon a while back for the wagon and transferred it over to the 3.0R, I haven't gotten around to hardwiring it but I am debating saving up for a better unit.

And what "TapTurn" module did you use?

I got one of these. (http://www3.telus.net/s_mcphee/orderTAP.html) It also solves the hyperflashing issue with LEDs which was part of the reason I got it, but now I decided to go back to standard bulbs for the turn signals.

fwa2500

I just got the basic one and so far I like it. The only issue I have had is my own not being used to just tapping the stalk, once you get used to how lightly you tap it isnt bad at all. A bit expensive, yes, but I dig the features and have always wanted one-touch functionality like this.

Ya, same deal as on the wagon, I ends dup grabbing some 5000k "Kensun" bulbs off Amazon, they have the normal generic bulb base and clear the caps just fine.

Your car probably had the stock JDM 20mm rsb. Over here we got a 16mm rsb. And for FWA, I recommend adding a Tribeca front sway bar. It makes a big difference on these cars. But you will need to unbolt the headers to do the swap.

I think mine was 18 or 19, noticeably smaller than 21mm Z/S that replaced it.
I'd recommend some good swaybar links too.

Dropping the headers wasn't too bad (with some help of a mighty breaking bar :D)

The bar made a massive difference, I'm sure the reinforcement and endlinks will help even more. I will also eventually get a beefier front bar (might as well go with a Tribeca bar again, loved it on the wagon) and endlinks too.

fwa2500

They are Andros Spec Ds (made for and bought from Tire Rack) in 18x8. They are pretty light for their size at 19.5lbs. I will be going with 235/40r18 summers and doing at least springs at the same time. The AVO bits are, as I suspect you guessed, rear sway brackets. I'm hoping to have all of this on and done in the next month or so. All the other cosmetic stuff like wingless trunk and "power bulge" hood I am shooting for next year though I am sure something will sneak into this year...

Looks good. What are you planning on for the center caps?

fwa2500
07-21-2015, 11:18 AM
I had been hoping I could make the stock caps work but they are *JUST* too small. I think I'm going to try to track down some Subaru stickers for the ones that came with the wheels and just go with that.

98legwag
07-21-2015, 01:16 PM
That is a good idea. I am still trying to decide on what wheels I want. I may wait till next spring at this point and kill off the tires I currently have since they are feathered. The previous owner of my car apparently didn't believe in alignments. The tires have been feathered since I bought it.

Strut and spring upgrade has been a complete success. Now rolling on brand new KYBs with H&R sport springs. The swap was done on Sunday with the help from a couple friends and we also knocked out brake pad an oil changes on their cars.

This feels SOOOOOOOO much better than the stock Bilsteins and still quite comfortable (better ride than the coilovers on the wagon were which were better than the STi stuff before that). Very nice. I think geckoboy86 wants some Bilsteins....for the right price. Any particular reason you chose to go to the KYBs instead of keeping the Bilsteins? I am assuming you got the right top hats for the KYBs as well.

Oh, there is someone on legacygt.com selling SPT mufflers.

fwa2500

The part numbers I'm finding for the scooped and flat hoods appear to be the same from 05-09, I don't see why the bulge one would be any different. The non-USDM facelift Outbacks also came with them while ours got those horrid chrome-trimmed things:

Re: Bilsteins.
I found them to be a bit harsh when you go over small road cracks at lower speeds. That was causing some interior squeaks, especially the vents under the windscreen always came to alive. Ohlins solved this for me, never had any squeaks since then, even at the firmest settings.

Re: headlights.
Seen some on Yahoo for something like JPY20,000-30,000 a few times (that's for a pair).

fwa2500
08-19-2015, 09:39 PM
I found the US-spec Bilsteins to be way too soft, they felt horribly under-dampened to me and would wallow about after going over a bump. Not to mention the nose dives under braking and squat under acceleration. The KYB/H&R combo has cured all of that. I'm quite happy with how it feels now (though I would still like to get Kartboy end links and Tibeca front sway bar again at some point). As for the lights, every time I have looked on there and on Croooober it always seems they are selling just the left or right lights. The one time I saw a pair listed in the US they were asking something crazy like $1200 for them, no way I am paying that. I'll keep looking, but as with all the other planned mods I am in no rush and quite happy where the car is now :)

Speaking of that, I just ran out for a couple quick photos…

Such nice photos. And yeah, the USDM Bilsteins are equvilant to the JDM GT Rev C Bilsteins, not even any JDM Spec B Bilstiens. The US spec cars are much softer. With that said, I do like them. But I want the front to sit a touch lower. Maybe someday I will get JDM GT Pinks or try to track down some Eibach/Epic springs (discontinued) and get Konis.

fwa2500
08-28-2015, 10:19 AM
None that I have noticed, it seems to be just about perfect. Fills out the guards nicely while also not having any clearance issues. I might be able to get away with 245s but these tyres should last for a couple more summers. I'm not a big fan of stretched tyres and the 235s ended up slightly more stretched than anticipated, but it really isn't bad. One of my friends is slightly lower with Konis and Swift springs on his Spec B also with no issues:

Hey man, I was going back over your thread and have a question. The Morimoto HID bulbs that did not fit with the caps, are they from the Morimoto Elite HID kit?

fwa2500
09-09-2015, 02:31 PM
Yes, they are the ones from the Elite kit. If they were 1cm shorter it would have been perfect but it was not to be. Their new style bulbs have a plug directly on the base of the bulb, which is nice so you wouldn't have to pull the whole pigtail out of the cap when changing bulbs, but it makes it too long. Oh well, the standard HID bulbs fit fine and work great with the Morimoto ballasts and harness.

Yep, it is one of the many ways that we got screwed by SoA. We also never got digital climate control until halfway through the third gen. Legacy cycle and even then it was an optional extra as far as I can work out. There was digital climate control in the first gens in JDM-land...I think the only good stuff we have gotten here that is special in any way are the closed deck EJ22 turbo engines in the first gen SS and the Baja family, everything else seems to be watered down and worse versions of what the rest of the world got.

Most of the people I know with FRS/BRZs either replaced the wheels or painted/powder coated them a solid colour, no-one likes the two-tone look, but they were kinda pitched as a tuner car anyway with the expectation they would be customized.

Most of it is just stuff that I had around, the only new stuff really was going to Harbor Freight and getting a DA buffer (this one (http://www.harborfreight.com/6-in-57-amp-heavy-duty-dual-action-variable-speed-polisher-69924.html)) and various pads. Here are all the other products I used:

Wash soap: Turtle Wax Ice
Clay: Mothers California Gold
Polish/compound: Meguiar's 205
Wax: Sonax Liquid Wax Hybrid NPT
Wheel cleaner: Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus
Tyre treatment: 3M Auto Essentials

Definitely a learning experience using a DA machine, I had never used one before. The time and effort was definitely worth it, I was able to remove the majority of the light swirls that were in the paint. There are still a ton of deeper marks, but it is a start!
