Engine Swap Shopping list

Hey guys,
so the time to swap my legacy's motor has come
i think i have all the things i need for this swap but if anyone could provide some additional info that would be vary helpful.
all the items i have so far are:
EJ20 motor (its a phase 2 SOHC, from what i gather it'll bolt in no problem and can be run from my NA EJ25 ecu)
new clutch
single mass flywheel
plenty of oil and coolant
im not sure what else i'll need other than hoist so any advice would be welcome

Wiring Harness and spread sheet
LOTS of crimps
LOTS of plastic baggies and labels
A turbo cross member(otherwise notch your stock one to be able to run the dp)
Rear diff and drive shafts(if you plan to also swap the tranny)
Engine reseal kit(never hurts to do while its out of the car)
bushings replace em while you are there
upgraded brakes WRX or better(more power need to stop better)
16 in or larger for the brake upgrade

EJ20 what? You say SOHC, so I guess it is non-turbo? EJ201, EJ203, EJ204?

its a JDM ej20 normally aspirated i dont have the whole code all i know is that its of similar vintage to my car.
doing all the bushings an everything would be a good idea while im in there and have planty of space to move around

This is probably stuff to order once you receive the jdm engine to inspect if these need replacing
rear main seal
timing belt kit (belt/idlers/tensioner)
this are the newer engines so it probably have the metal oil separator

i was planning on doing seals and stuff once i had the engine
the funny thing is my ej25 is 156 hp and the ej20 is 155
do you think the timing belt should be done before i toss it in or could i wait for later?

Hmm, something's not right. The EJ20 engine that made 155hp was the EJ204, but that was DOHC...

Either you were given the incorrect power numbers, or given the wrong engine. It's probably the first one. I would bet that it's an EJ20E, that engine was pretty common. And if it's the Phase II EJ20E, then the numbers were 135hp.

[EDIT: nevermind. You said it came from the same type of car as yours. I just figured you had a 2nd gen. Since you have a 3rd Gen, the engine is probably an EJ201, which is VERY similar to your EJ251, but with 0.5L less engine. The output number for that was 137hp.]

weird, i've only seen 2 threads documenting this swap one was a forester and the other was an impreza both were just about as old as my car
IIRC both mention the ej20e being 10 hp less then the 251/253 and drivablity being smoother with the power loss almost unnoticeable. Wikipedia states the ej252 in my car is 115 kw while the ej20e from the jdm legacy is 114 kw

The EJ20E was used in the 2nd Gen only. You have an engine from a 3rd gen, right?

i guess wiki was way wrong, it lists the ej20e being fitted to numerous legacys and a few imprezas and with a range of power levels, i'll have to look for the whole engine code to be sure.
i havent gotten the engine yet, im still shopping around the lowest i have seen is 650.
if the wiki is correct with my engine being rated at 156 then 137 shouldent be tooo bad, might be able to squeeze some more out if i get the engine to breath better. IIRC with supporting mods a port and polish job made somewhere in the ball park of 20-30 hp.

edit: im also thinking about just putting the ej20 heads on the ej25 block, assuming everything inside looks ok for some high compression and more grunt

As a general rule, I don't believe anything on the internet and try to find somebody that can show visible proof of what they post. I happen to have a lot of information on Japanese Legacys and older Imprezas (GC/GF and GD/GG) from Subaru itself, so I post it when I am backing up what I say. The problem is, I'm completely rubbish when it comes to mechanical stuff and can only translate what is in the information books. I am not able to help with swap/modification (what's needed, what works with what, and so on) information.

I thought the US Legacy was 165hp... I don't know how authoritative these are, but here you go:

like i said, there are only 2 threads that i have found documenting the processes both seemed pretty happy with the results
taking what you said into account i guess the lower power rating of the 00/01 manual transmission ej252 subaru legacy its probably miss information.

Yea.. the Wikipedia article is extremely wrong. It says that the EJ20E was found in all Japanese NA legacies from 1989 to 2009. The BP/BL cars were EJ203, the BE/BH were EJ201.

The EJ20E was only in BD/BG Legacies, and in a few Imprezas of similar years... But it is really important to identify what motor you actually have, there are a few different SOHC EJ20s..

You can, and I have in the past, but someone else will come along and revert it or otherwise change it to be incorrect again. I eventually gave up, as I could not get any accurate information to stick on there.

oh well at least we have accurate info here
137 hp is kinda disappointing but eh, if i can figure out were to get ej204 pistons and a few breather mods it should really help
