Hi! So basically I'm new to the Subaru world but I've traded for a 96 ob with a ej25 with the auto trans. I've had a 96 ob with the ej22 and the 5spd. The ej25 has a bad head gasket. I just want to swap engine and get the rust free ob on the road. So... How is the difficultly level? Is this going to be worth it? What am I going to really need off of my parts car? Thank you in advance.

My 97 LGT 5spd had a shattered cam gear when I bought it. Pulled it out, bolted in a 96 L auto EJ22E, drove it. Hell, it even runs off the 2.5 ECU. You'll just need the complete motor from oil pan to intake manifold. The EJ22 engine wiring harness will plug right in, all the hoses go to the same places.

The 5spd EJ22 might not have EGR (exhaust recirculation valve) and the EJ25 ECU will be looking for it, so you'll have a check engine light from that. Has no effect on performance, just an emissions thing. My EJ22 came from an auto car, so it had EGR. The 2.5 power steering hard lines will not bolt onto the 2.2's intake manifold like they did on the 2.5. Again, doesn't affect anything and they're plenty secure without it.
