1995 Legacy GT Wagon (BG5) with EJ20/twin turbo and A/T

My wife said that I have to at least ask for help before I can part out essential stuff:

So here I go:

Engine -
Very hard to start.
Really bad in wintertime, usually have to crank for 30-90 seconds before it'll turn over. It'll stumble sometimes and the stumbling eventually results in starting.
In the past few months it's gotten worse and sometimes won't stumble or turn over at all, especially when hot.
Now its to the point where it will die while idling and then not start again. I'm confused as hell.
The exhaust smell is extremely rich once it does start.

At this point, i'm not willing to invest any money in repair of the engine or transmission, since both are broken. Basically if I get one fixed, the other is b0rked and I can't sell the car.

Transmission (AT) -
I have 2 gears. 1 and 2.
In D, I have to accelerate to 40kph to force it to kickdown into 2, and once into 2, I have nowhere else to go.
It used to work flawlessly, up until about 6 months ago.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If I can't get this puppy running again, it's off to the chopping block.

I agree...sounds like a coolant temp sensor problem, and possibly a need for a tune-up along with it. Sounds like the transmission is just shot...check the fluid and such, possibly change it...I doubt that will help though.

A coolant temp sensor is a VERY minor fix, man.

The tranny is probably another story, although it could be the TCU reading a problem and protecting the engine or tranny.

Fix the temp sensor and see what happens.

Should be a VERY easy fix... gearbox is probably shot, but the running rich part is easy enough.
