Brake Calipers Between Models

Let me preface this by say I know this info is buried somewhere deep in the recesses of SLi but I am in a hurry trying to get ready for autox this weekend. I looked at the stickes and didn't see anything, So are the front calipers off a 2004 Forester compatible with my 2000 Legacy GT Ltd.

looks like subaru made a change for 02' and up, don't know if its a mounting change that would make bolting them up a problem or if its some internal thing that doesn't matter like bigger pistons or something, the parts # aren't the same, but its like a 20 min job to fully swap and just see if it works.

The calipers themselves should work on both platforms, but you may want to double check that the rotors are the same size. If they are not, then just put the 04 Forester rotors on too.

Fyi the brake sizing upgrade happened in 2001, so 2000 was the odd year out.

Brighton: 10.1" front disk with single caliper piston. Rear 9.0" drum
L models: 10.7" vented front disc with dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc.

2001
all models: 10.7" vented front disc with dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc.

2002
all models: 10.7" vented front disc with dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc.

2003
L:10.7" vented front disc, dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc.
GT: 11.4" vented front disc, dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc

2004
L:10.7" vented front disc, dual caliper piston, 11.3" rear disc.

The only difference between the 2000 sizes was for the Brighton.. which was produced in such limited quantities, that it is barely worth mentioning. I did, however, forget that only the GT got the rotor bump with the 03 changes.

Well I'm going to be doing brake stuff on my 01 outback this weekend so I can confirm, but I swear I had the bigger rotors last time I was in there.

After looking it up, You are right for the Outbacks. They got the bump in 2001, and Legacy GT got the bump in 2003. Legacy L had no size change for the entire generation.



2000: Brighton - 10.1" front disc, Rear 9.0" drum.
L/GT - 10.7" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
OB - 10.7" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.

2001: L/GT - 10.7" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
OB - 11.4" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.

2002: L/GT - 10.7" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
OB - 11.4" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.

2003: L - 10.7" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
GT - 11.4" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
OB - 11.4" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.

2004: L - 10.7" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
GT - 11.4" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.
OB - 11.4" front disc, 11.3" rear disc.



This is straying a bit away from the OPs question since he is not asking about an Outback, so I looked up the Forester information too. 2004 Foresters have 11.4" front discs, so you will need the whole caliper with brackets and rotors, but that whole setup will bolt on to your hubs with no problems, as long as your wheels clear.

I did the 2001 outback front brake upgrade with slotted rotors and 02 WRX rear calipers with slotted rotors and stainless braided lines all around on the 98, what a difference!!
