Post 1001, the introduction of our third (my 5th) Subaru!!!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/03/giphygif-1.jpg

On April 14, 2015 (USA Tax Day), I was gifted this white 1998 Outback Limited, 5MT.

I'd been following its slow demise offering a "hundred bucks" for it a few times, but Bruce wouldn't budge. "You know what the sand rail guys in CA pay for and can do to these engines?" He let me do a little picking (stereo, windshield wipers and the leather seats) over the 2014 fall-winter months, and he eventually got tired of looking at and just gave it to me. :wink:

I did tell the great state of Utah I payed $1.00 for it, so I gave them $.06 or so in taxes.

Mountain biker Bruce bought it with 188,910 on 5/23/2006 and I took over ownership with 265965 on 3/14/2015. There's record of plugs and wires at 188K, and the HG was done somewhere in there (evidenced by mileage and visual inspection).

It had been going through about a qt of oil per 1,000 miles from 2/2013, then stopped when an idler pulley flamed.

About as stock as they come :happy8:

Bumper skin included (He was trying to strip parts for his '96 replacement car). He kept the 5 spoke limited rims so the typical stockers came with this car (beggars can't be choosers ;)

After a vacuum job (I'd pilfered the heated leathers for the Superu, but they'll come back to the White Shadow as the SUPERU's just been fitted with 03 OBS seats)

So, with a big thanks nepbug for his keen eyes and help, I've acquired a '97 legacy's DOHC (nicknamed Pennys), with the following alleged history:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/pennys-1.jpg

running when pulled;
ran well above 3K RPM, but missing at idle;
suspected intake valve leak on cylinder two (hoefully not piston/ring problem) as compression there was low, all other cylinder compression reported good;
WRX oil pump installed;
bottom end rebuilt with new rings and ACL crank bearings;
heads rebuilt (questionable job);
Valve covers, intake and oil pan painted copper

Have engine stand but lack engine hoist:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/IMG_4259JPG-1.jpg

BUT, borrowing friend's bucket truck with a hoist completes the picture:

Have will and tools, will manage:

Flip Flops, yeah!!

Pulled the passenger head b/c working in pairs makes sense, and it had the lame OE single layer (albeit new) HG installed post head rebuild:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/IMG_5306JPG-1.jpg

I clamped off the T-belt to pop cam shaft bolts with the impact gun.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/IMG_5308JPG-1.jpg

To gain access to the head bolts, you must remove the cam caps and cams (in FSM-provided sequence):
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/IMG_5312JPG-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/SNAG005-1.jpg

Intake cam is the upper while and exhaust is lower.
*NOTE: pictured (from FSM) is right/driver head, make appropriate adjustments for the pass (left) head

keep track of where everything came from so you can put them back in the proper locations
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/IMG_5319JPG-1.jpg

Remove head bolts as instructed in the FSM:

Cool start! That looks like a Fel-Pro gasket... I hate those things. Look foward to seeing it tip top and on the road! ;)
