Okay, so I have a '96 Outback, 2.5 Auto, that just blew a head gasket. Just as I was about to find a new outback to replace it, my shop found another Outback, a 99 2.5 manual, that had rear end damage sitting in a lot across the street. My shop had actually just done the head gasket on this Outback, so mechanically it's ready to go aside from the big bruise in the back it earned by getting rear-ended on its way home from the shop THE SAME DAY the head gasket job was completed. So my plan is to pick that wrecked outback up and swap out the good stuff from it into my dead 96, including the 5 speed. Is there anything I need to look out for? I've asked questions on this forum about the 4EAT to 5MT swap that sounded like the easiest way to swap was to just not hook up all the pins, but since I have EVERYTHING, I'd like to do this the right and complete way. It's funny, I was going to scrap the 96 for a newer outback because I didn't think I had the time or patience for a head gasket job, and now I'm about to do an engine swap haha

If you havent done this yet, it really is not that difficult. It IS time consuming. I have gotten pulling and reinstalling the motor down to a 2 hour deal now. The Trans swap took me all weekend, because I was only using jack stands, and did it mostly alone.

If you had a lift, you could basically unplug the wiring, unbolt the AC compressors from the engines leaving the hoses attached, and drop out the complete front and rear suspesion assemblies as units and you are looking at quite a bit less work as you would not need to separate the motor/trans or undo the Power steering stuff. Just need to make sure the car is up high enough to get the assembly out from under the car.
