View Full Version : The send off for the 300K EJ25D?

I have had a turbo setup sitting in my shed for almost 2 years. I know it will more then likely kill the 25D. I wanted to get the motor up to 300K before doing it since everyone talks so much crap about 25D's. The car has 267K on it right now. The motor has 297K (spun a bearing years back) and the motor is getting really tired. As in a bit of oil usage, much louder piston slap, and a little loss of power. All to be expected with any engine with 300,000 miles.

So I have been thinking... I think it's time to do my little turbo conversion. I have the turbo crosmember, all the exhaust to the down pipe and a worn out TD04. I might just use my VF22 that I have from my EJ20H. I didnt plan to use much boot at all. I also have a completed 5 speed swap that I have had as well, but I didnt want to convert it to a manual till the trans died.

Let me know what you guys think. I will be tossing the turbo setup on, knowing it will more then likely kill the 25D. But I was thinking of doing it while leaving the car an automatic.

Note: My girlfriend does not know how to drive a manual, so this is a factor. I let her use it when I'm working on her Jeep.

A lot of people also talk crap about the 4EAT being weak. I say turbo both, the tired 25D and the auto trans, they both should hold for a little while, but it shows they lasted for a long time!

The 4EAT is weak? I've always heard that it can handle power better than the older 5MTs - after all, they threw it on the WRX as-is.

The 4EAT's have crappy center diffs, but I have never had a problem with it. It's still working great at 267K and I have only serviced it once.. haha

But yeah, I did want to kinda see how it would hold up to the power, but then again, there may not be much boost going to it.

Go TD04, you don't want a spun bearing to take out your VF22 with metal pieces.

I say turbo it with the auto since you're trying to figure out how long will the old 25D will hold. How about nitrous instead of turbo lol

I've got a 25D with 450,000 miles on the original block. I don't think it's been rebuilt, but I'm not positive. Yours can make it to 300k!!!

I wouldn't worry about the 4eat too much. The guy I scooped my current engine from had it running in his 98 gt wagon and it was auto. He said it pulled hard and held boost well until the ej20h dropped a piston. He replaced the bottom end with a 20k and I bought it, and I will be running it in my 99gt (also auto). I was told that the fastest way to kill the 4eat is to boost launch it. You'll sheer the output shafts clean off. Which is exactly what I'll do when I'm ready for the 5 speed swap. Good luck!
