So I have a 2.2L 99 legacy L 30th anniversary and I'm wondering about the intake. When I got the car I was told it is a California spec car so it has 2 air filters. One in the normal intake box before the MAF (MAP?) and one in the Torque box (as I have heard it referred to as). This seems to be a little ridiculous, especially because it's in Wisconsin, not California. 2 Air filters can't be great for the engine breathing. What can I do as far as taking out a filter, using a CIA or hybrid intake? I have kind of run into a wall :banghead: as there seems to be very limited information out there on this subject. Any past experience or general advice would be great as I'd like to see a little more power or acceleration but i don't want to blindly do anything that could hurt power or my car. Also curious if this is an ej221, 2, or 3. I know its phase 2 but that's about it. Thanks!

There should only be one filter in the airbox at the fender. The other box is capable of holding a filter but should be empty and was that way from the factory.

I was gonna say - I've never heard of two filters being a requirement.
If your air sensor is built into the throttle body portion, it's a MAP sensor, if it's by the airbox towards the passenger fender, it's a MAF.

Unfortunately, the OP speaks the truth. I do not believe it is a "Requirement", but some 99s do indeed have two air filters. One in the airbox near the ABS pump, and another near the throttle body. Air filters should not cause restriction, so having two should not impede induction in any significant way.
As for your engine type, it is on the Model Plate under your hood on the drivers side strut pillar. It is listed as "Engine Type"

I've read that the stock intake is the best and not worth putting on a CAI however is there any benefit or negative effect to changing the piping from after the MAF to the throttle body or removing the box right before the throttle body?

I would leave it alone. The intake is well designed and not a restriction on the system without a lot of supporting mods. I modded my intake on my '95 and when I went back to stock, I realized that power delivery had been hurting with aftermarket piping (this was with a stock airbox).
If you want a louder sound, you can remove the intake silencer (referred to as the 'snorkus') in the fender. It doesn't change anything as it's pre-MAF & pre-filter.
