Bored at work, reserving a spot for my newest Legacy. Another free Subaru.

It started out as a friends friend wanted him to look at it but he didn't have time so I said I would. It was overheated real bad, the "mechanic" did head gaskets and all new timing components etc. Got it back together and it wouldn't start. He threw everything at it, maf, igniter, plugs, wires, coil pack etc. After that it sat for 6 months or more.

Found out the "mechanic" used the wrong crankshaft sprocket tab for a timing mark and it was 3.5 teeth off. Took it apart and reinstalled the belt and it fired right up.

Later found out the alternator had a short in it and caused one hell of an electrical phenomenon.

The owner didn't want to put any more money into the car so I pretty much took it over for labor to get it running.

Not going to go too crazy with it but I plan on using as a daily.

Have tein coils, JIC camber plates and pillow ball mounts, bbs and some other small JDM stuff for it. Projector fogs and a turbo hood if I can find one.

Hahahaha, springs, camber plates, pillowballs, bbs's - on yah daily BJ. Respect!

I just got a white facelift BF Ti legacy, though JDM Ti's are SPFI 1.8. It is SO staying stock (well, except interior, it stinks, so we are putting in our spare leather interior). I'm so enjoying having a bash wagon that I can just chuck equipment in with reckless abandon. So far it's carted a gear box, an engine, and an engine crane 4 times, and it's only been on the road a month!

I hope to be daily driving asap. Just waiting on the title. Plan on buying a new shell for the '99 and swapping everything over. Once that is done perhaps a JDM impreza swap is needed for this beater.

I love how no model is too low spec to be considered for epic builds over there. Here, everyone looks at you funny if you even touch an N/A! I told clubsub what I have done to Blighter (my BC Ti auto), and what was planned, and I literally got responses back like "why don't you just sell it and buy an RS?" Pisses me off no end! If the chassis is straight, fair game I say, regardless of what it rolled out of the factory as!

I'm still new to the first gens but I think the '94 Ti in the US was one year only and so is the white pearl paint.

Over here to get a decent turbo model wagon or sedan you need to pay a lot...at least in the Pacific Northwest, most of the turbo models have been completely ruined by kids. So the easiest option is to buy a beater L,Lsi,gt, Ti etc and swap everything. Wish I could go buy a clean turbo wagon or sedan for $2000 but that doesn't happen often.

What do we have here? I knew there had to be something done to the ecu. Race daily now I guess...
Only have 92 octane in the US :( guess I'll have to be doing a 50/50 mix of 92 and 101.

Can't you get it remapped? Isn't that what the data selector is for, to switch maps? I believe the sticker on the ECU also shows when it was remapped.

I have no idea on the older ECU. Obd1 so no open source tuning. Assuming the selector is just for that, changing the maps. Kind of like a diesel banks power pack.

I'm not sure either, it possibly has a daughter board(?) like with the older Legacies. In that case you would just need to find someone who knows what they're doing and get it remapped. Would be nice to have switchable maps too.

Going to splurge some of my 20G knowledge here for yah.
Assuming internals are stock, hydraulic 20G's are pretty much all cast 8:1 or 8.5:1 compression, with the exception of the STi's with their HF3 forged Pistons (and maybe some WRX's (RA's?) with HF2 stamped on theirs). They all run grey tops, and all are pared with 2-bar map sensors, meaning boost cut is around 15-18psi roughly. As a result of the low comp and low boost, and conservative tunes from factory, you can run them pretty much on any fuel you stumble upon... But if that things been tuned to buggery, who knows what's going on! Tuned to fuck for hundred octane? Conservative power bump on standard fuel? Hmmm. I'd love to find out what the deal is. Any sign of injector swapping, 3-bar map? Or is she looking standard as heck?

Post up the vin (GC8-xxxxxx), and I'll tell you exactly what motor the car rolled off the factory floor with, and if you could post a pic of the rocker covers too, I'm looking for lines on top, but not bottom which is direct hydraulic WRX. All smooth suggests later engine, lines top and bottom is legacy roller rocket hydraulic.

As far as I can tell, the only thing changed on the engine performance wise is an hks mushroom filter.

Someone removed the strut tower vin tag.

i would see if you can find another ej20g ecu and sell that setup to someone overseas possibly. or just get that one chipped by rob. tons of people run his tune. u8 ecu would date this as a 93/94 wrx sedan which very well could be a closed deck block. also has the td05 16g turbo.

I was planning on buying a stock ecu after I see how the current one runs.

GC8-003849
Applied model: GC8A48D
Engine Code: EJ20G - Full number not listed in fast for some reason...
Gearbox: MT, 4.111 diff
Build date 16th December 1992.
Power: 240ps/237hp @ 6000rpm
Torque: 31Kgm/304nm/224lbft @ 5000rpm
Compression: 8.5:1

So this is what us kiwi's call a Version "0", and this particular example is a standard wrx. These were the release models, and simply known as 92 WRX's, the STi wasn't released until GC8B, then the STi "Version II" was a GC8C, so one can interpolate back and call the A's a "Version 0" for simple and quick identification. These "V0's" are the lowest power EJ20G's available in the WRX range, weighing in at a whopping 240ps/237hp, but that was still a decent upgrade from the legacy roller rocker 20g's which were 200ps for GT's, and 220ps for the RS's. I would expect to find a TD04 on this, not a TD05 sadly. But the sales brochure does depict a closed deck block! No guarantees though. The sales brochure also depicts alloy control arms! bonus! I've seen many WRX's of this vintage with standard steel, this is actually a huge surprise to me... If you have steels, then my guess is that would be a WRX RA feature.

This is the sales brocure pertaining to your little rex, the spec sheet even shows your gearbox ratios:

That's awesome info! I couldn't find anything searching the vin.

It does have alloy control arms and a torsen lsd. Also does have a td05h turbo.

So its been upgraded a bit. I can't tell what color the injectors are.

Thanks again Reuben!

Looks like you lucked out! Also seems that in the absence of an actual STi model, the v0's got some cool gear, like alloys and TD05's. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I see some locally.

So you going to stick with the factory setup there, like a mostly stock JDM GT look, or going to do custom turbo mount and front mount intercooler etc?

If you want I can get you a water to air intercooler setup, you'll just have to wire it to 'on' with the ignition, that's all.

Oh and in case you didn't know you'll need to keep the legacy's propshaft/driveshaft, as that impreza one will be the wrong length. I'm sure there'll be a GC owner that will want one for a manual conversion!

Well....I'd like to leave it as-is if I can. Right now I have an outback sport/2.5rs and stock legacy hood at Dead91silvia 's so he can weld the scoop in (since finding a turbo hood is impossible) so I might have to run a wrx top mount. I'll probably run the slanted tmic.

Isn't the water to air setup almost the same as an st165/185 celica alltrac/gt4? I'd be interested but I bet shipping would be a lot?

Hey Reuben, if you have time. This half cut should be bone stock. I have one other Sti RA cut that I want to buy mainly for the transmission (supposedly cryo treated) but has a hole in the block. I need to get you the vin if you don't mind looking it up for me.

Threw the ecu in my buddies 1st gen turbo wagon since he is running a 20g ecu. What a fun test drive it was. I will be able to run on the number 1 setting with pump gas I think.

Setting 4 hits 19-20 psi. Can't wait to get this in the car!

GF8-014623
Applied model: GF8C58P "Version 2" Standard WRX wagon.
Engine number: Not listed again, just says "EJ20G"
Manufacture date: 07/08/1995 (7th Aug, 1995)
Transmission AT.
Power: 220ps / 6000rpm
Torque: 28.5 kg/m / 3500rpm
Compression ratio anywhere from 8.5-9:1

Nothing greatly exciting about this model, but you can assume that being an auto that engine has probably never been thrashed as bad as a manual sedan for example. As always with hydraulic 20G's (yes this will be the same design as your sedan, direct hydraulic heads), the composite head gaskets tend to fail after 250,000km, just from pure age related degradation.

The auto's tend to be detuned from their manual siblings, so tend to be more reliable. By 1995, the WRX had been pumped up to 260ps, the STi RA a stagering 275ps (On the small green AFM and grey tops!! Relying on a 5th injector to atomise in the intake manifold to reduce intake air temps, kinda like water meth injection), but the lowly auto wagons still only put out 220ps, like the legacy RS 6 years prior to it, and are actually down on torque compared to the first release WRX manuals. These engines also DEF do come with a TD-04, nothing fancy. I can also tell you they are def open deck too. Sorry, don't know compression ratio, but my GUESS is 8.5:1, but there's a good chance they could be 9:1.

BUT don't let these comparatively "dull" numbers fool you, they are capable engines, and given a different ECU, they liven right up. Even the lowly auto rex engines still have far more potential than the legacy RS motors, and only take a gently tickle to produce very very decent power!

Love this build, but I'll also advocate for no mini scoop in the hood. I do however like the OEM Subaru hood vents on this hood... I'll stop preaching my opinion now! LOL

3 months since my last update... a lot has been done.

new dash along with factory stereo and cd player. nardi wheel and subaru shift knob. ver 6 GF8 STi seats. Fujitsobo titanium muffler and exhaust system done. hydraulic clutch conversion. polished out the headlights, they matched the gold wheels before they were so yellow. color matched mirrors and door handles. new tint.
JDM taillights. JDM bumper (not installed yet) JDM front 4 pots. vented rear disc brakes. kinda decided to go with a Syms theme.

Aaaaaaaaw yeah, looking fucking good! You've done a bloody epic job with conversion, and done over only a summer. Good stuff.

It's really coming together for sure! Just need to do a bit more paint work, at least on my end. I was happy with how the hood turned out too.

What do you think about the scoops? More so the side scoop... I know you didnt like the idea. What do you think?

Reuben

I've always disliked the little side scoops. I understand Americans like that sorta stuff, with a long history of non fictional scoops on mustangs etc (even though this does feed air to the filter!) but yeah, nah... Doesn't suit the vehicle in my eyes, and I don't like asymmetry.. Just an opinion, but hey, thats what forums are all about, sharing thoughts and ideas.

On the WRX scoop though, meh, 100% essential if one is to run an air to air top mount. Trust me in this, legacy scoops are inadequate for hard driving, intake temps skyrocket. but for daily duties they are ok. I know I need one on beast, but I'll live with the high temps because I really like the look of that car as is right now. There's a BG GTB limited in town with a WRX scoop like that and every time i see it I think 'yeah.. nope, not happening to beast'.

Dead91silvia

Fair enough. It actually took me a LONG time to get the side scoop to fit right. And yeah, we do have a lot of cars with scoops, that dont do a damn thing. It had to have the scoop for the intercooler, but the side was an after thought. We both like it, I just like to hear what others think about it.

To me the scoops on the BG/BK/BD's are really small and any time I pushed the GTB, it would get really warm and didnt like it. Sometimes though, they can just be too big, like using an STi scoop, those are massive and look out of place most of the time.

Reuben

That scoop you used is an STi scoop to me btw. 96-00 STi :p (yeah I know to you it's a 2.5 Rs scoop) I agree, GD STi scoops are silly big on any other car. I hate how many GC's in NZ have them fitted, they really ruin the lines of a car that doesn't have the harsh edges and flares that a GD does. Style is important too! GC scoops work on pretty much any other 90's subie though, they have the rounded edges to match the lines of the car, and they aren't too chincy and big. I like the GC scoop you've done there, it doesn't distract you from the rest of the car, which is what you want.

You know the stock vents the GC's have on the turbo bonnets each side. I would have gone with those. That part of the bonnet is a negative pressure zone, so any holes in the bonnet there draw air out (not push air in)(thank Ol Bruce mclaren for finding out that neat trick). You could get excellent air flow if the vent was above an otherwise sealed off air box, that could only feed from the fender, or front of car.

Bit of trivia for yah. Those aforementioned vents the GC's have, the keen Impreza guys will know they are blocked off from factory. The covers that block the off are removable, Subaru called them winter covers, and it's implied you take them off during summer to reduce engine bay temps if that's your thing, they aren't fake like some might suggest!

No I'm not trained in aerodynamics, so if I'm wrong I'm wrong btw.

Dead91silvia
08-21-2016, 12:12 PM
lol.... Interesting bit on the airflow. I know on my GTIR I can take the vent blocks out, I just forget to put them back in after winter. haha... I actually have been meaning to take some string to that scoop just to see if it actually works. And yes, for us the RS and Outback Sport came with those scoops, I think after 97 over here. The big scoops are a little much on the older cars.

Car has come a long ways since my last post. Cant believe it's been this long. I wish tapatalk worked so I can post pics from my phone.

Car now runs an enduring solutions board, Nissan 300zx twin turbo maf and is tuned at 20psi.
Comp clutch stage 3 segmented disc installed with a 4.44 trans and suretrac diff. Apexi modded vf22 turbo and a JUN 1.5 scroll equal length header, sti 550 injectors.

Car gets up and moves. Taking it for another tune soon and going to push the turbo to its limit.
