Okay so, here follows my EJ22R build.
The EJ22E is an extremely robust block. No ifs, ands or buts about it. 52mm rods, forged crank and rods from the factory, it is easily one of the toughest engines in existence so I thought, why not throw a little boost to it. I did some research and found DOHCEJ22E1's account of his build. I found him on Facebook and began chatting about the possibilities. He instructed me on many things, which EJ25D heads would work, which ones to avoid, what head gaskets would work and so on.
After learning that the EJ25D shares the same casting as most of the Phase I EJ turbo heads (20K/20R/20G/20H) I remembered a good friend had some warpped EJ20R heads sitting in his storage shed!
I disassembled the 20R heads and replaced the old, low tech 25D valvetrain with the high performance 20R components. One of the camshaft thrust flanges was broken by a previous owner so I shipped it to Delta Camshaft (25$ fix!!!)
Junkyard research yielded the difference between the 96 25D and the 97-99 25D intakes. There's a pic of it in the first thread. The 96 runners are HUGE. Same size as the 20R intake manifold I have. After seeing that size difference, I went with the 96 intake manifold and had my 25D heads ported to the 20R size.

So I installed my 20R cams and thus completed the 25D to 20R valvetrain swap. All but ONE lobe shimmed up PERFECTLY. Now I wait for my head studs!

So the 22R as I have nicknamed it consists of a 90-95 EJ22E bottom end and EJ25D heads with the EJ20R valvetrain. Specs are as follows:
90-95 22E bottom end
97-99 25D heads
JDM 20R valvetrain
96 25D intake manifold
Fel Pro MLS 22T head gaskets
OEM 22T oil pump
OEM 205 water pump
Gates timing belt
ARP head studs
Should make for a nasty little boost motor.

Cool! I like mechanical bits. What's your engine management solution?
My car is a '99 Legacy GT sedan, WRX EJ205/6MT swapped with a harness merge and 22E bottom end. I run 18psi on it and have no expectations of failure. The 22E is a stout motor!
I've had issues using the thin .8mm EJ22 MLS headgaskets, so I'm glad to see you are using the EJ22T thick ones. I went with 1.3mm Cometics after I identified the issue on my last shortblock.
I also fully support the SUS grill, easily the best grill on a second gen. Looking forward to seeing how your build works out!

I LOVE every 205/6MT WRX I've ever driven. Can't imagine how BADASS that is in a light car like the BD!
For engine management I'll just keep the stock 25D ECU for my 5PSI break in period. Later on I'll be swapping on a 205 wastegate onto my TD04-13T for the 8PSI pressure. After that I will be investing in a Ralitek PP6 or a GReddy Emanage Ultimateor something like that.
I'll probably slap in my EJ208 injectors, and a RRFPR and lay 14-18 PSI to it, depending on what Dale at Boxer4Racing thinks, tuning-wise.
Thanks for the kind words! I'll go check out your build thread here in a few! I'll be investing in a 6MT when taxes come back [emoji16] [emoji16]

It's an ebay 04-05 v-limited lip. Here you can see how I installed it.

So my head studs came, along with many other pieces of the puzzle! Also swapped to a 22T IACV soit won't interfere as much with the turbo inlet
