Which Subaru should I keep?

Okay, I just keep going back and forth on this and it's getting me nowhere. I need to figure out if I want to finish the H6 and sell the FXT or take care of the FXT and sell the H6. Here are the lists of things that I feel are relevant to the conversation:

H6
Reasons to keep going:
1) It has VDC (which is great!)
2) It is mostly a North American Blitzen6
3) I LOVE the 3rd Gen sedan
4) Very little left to do
5) Amount of time and effort already put into it
6) Higher fuel economy than FXT and cheaper gas (89 vs 93)

Reasons to sell:
1) The work remaining is pricey (at least $4~5K)
2) It's a 4AT
3) It's the slowest vehicle I have
4) No real options for engine performance upgrades


FXT
Reasons to keep going:
1) It has carrying capacity
2) It's a 5MT
3) I'm able to use it during the time I have everthing done
4) Everything that needs/wants to be done is minor
5) Can continue to upgrade in the future, if desired

Reasons to sell:
1) Fuel economy/costs kinda blows
2) The total costs of everything I need/want to do is as high as the H6
3) Over 210,000 miles on it.
4) Easier to sell as is than the H6
5) Not as nice (inside or out) as the H6


So vote and share your reasons! I need some fresh thoughts and ideas with this problem.

I vote keep the H6. Like you said, the time and effort put into is more than the Forester. I think its more unique. For me at this point, comfort matters. You also have the Imprezsaab for when you want to go fast.

I'd keep the FXT, but the FXT will sell much faster. But, if you have a turbo Saabaru as well I guess selling the FXT makes the most sense.

So far it seems pretty straightforward. But only getting a response from 3 people isn't definitive. I'm going back to Japan in a few weeks and plan to make my decision before then. One way or another, I will have one less vehicle by the end of the year.
(If I choose to keep the H6, I will have to hold on to the Forester until the work is finished)

I have mixed feeling on it, so I'm not voting. As you (and we) have so much time into the H6, there is a lot of work left to do for sure. The FXT has much more room and is much more usable then the H6

That being said, the H6 is much different and still fun. It might not have the same power, but it is something that is not easy to get. The FXT is a turbo car making the cost of up keep continual and with the miles, to will be constant from this point.

I think this would really come down to what your wife wants to do. She's the one driving them both and she seems to like the FXT from what you have said. I know she did like the H6 also...

Yeah, she said she is fine either way and trusts whatever decision I make.... so no help there.
If I could sell the S401, then it's plausible to keep both, but I really want to reduce the number of cars we have.

I think the FXT would be much easier to sell close to how much money you've put into it - especially since its manual. The H6...not as many people appreciate the work or understand the reasoning behind it so it may take longer to sell.

Also, I've seen the tuning issues you've had with the FXT - any thoughts on getting an open source dyno tune? No need for any AP/Ecutek or any other piggyback.

How about putting both up for sale and see which goes first? Let fate decide which car you'll be keeping :razz:

Well after glancing at the H6 and FXT build threads, I fully agree with keeping the H6 now. Very unique, love it, and sadly you wouldn't be able to get what you should out of it because it's not a turbo. I'd sell the FXT. Plust FXTs are easy to acquire if you want to get another down the road.

I made an appointment at the local body shop I trust (they did the Saab-ification to my Impreza) to take the H6 and get a panel by panel estimate for work. Hopefully, it stayes within my estimate. Otherwise I have to figure something else out.

I am also going back to Japan in a week and bringing back an STi top mount for the FXT. They can be had for half the cost of the cheapest ones here, so I figured why pass up that opportunity. Then I figure I might as well just find myself an '04 STi ECU anyway since it'll be the same setup...
But then that's IT for the FXT! no more mods since I will focus on the H6.

I'd sell the FXT & keep the H6. You might have different responses if you posed the same question on a Forester forum! We are biased around here. The FXT will be easier to sell without a doubt.

Well, I was quoted over $8k for the work I want to have done. So that's definitely out. Either the H6 has to find a new home or I have to figure out a new plan. I spoke with dead91silvia and we're cooking up some creative ideas....
