Need help!!!

I HATE Bambi... because the jerk leaped out in front of me on NEW US 392 and wiped out my beloved 99 Legacy SUS on Halloween '15. Now, I'm in the process of trying to replace "Rose".

I need help.

Rose has 166k miles, the 30th Anniv rims, a new water pump and head gasket and thermo (replaced last year), the winter weather package, a full-size spare I bought, three new-er tires, a new rotor and caliper and pad on the rear passenger, a new headlight and indicator on the left side, new driver's front quarter panel, new bulbs all around, a double cig/power outlet mod(aftermarket), and went through an oil change 1500 miles ago. I also have all the paperwork for the repairs and work done to "Rose".

The shop says it's $2000 to repair, and KBB says that's what this car is worth...
...I know I could get a chunk of change parting her out, but once again, I turn to SLI to help me find what this car is worth.

My parents (due to the fact I deliver pizza for $4.75 an hour) are having to dip into their retirement funds to help me get a replacement. Any pictures? If the damage isn't too bad, it might be worthwhile to kludge together a cheap fix out of junkyard parts and keep that car on the road. Since all the bad stuff that usually goes wrong has already been fixed, that sounds like the most financially responsible plan to me. Even if you do have to put the full 2k into repairing that car, could you buy another one that has had all that work done for the same 2k? If not, it's probably best to suck it up and repair yours. I'm guessing you didn't have anything except liability insurance...

Post up some pics of the damage. Your profile says you're in East Tennessee, I'm in southwest VA and know of a few places around here where parts can be had very reasonable. I'll do what I can to help you find stuff to put her back together, hell I have quite a few parts here that could probably help, such as hood, bumper and headlights if it was a front-ender.

UPDATE

State Farm got an estimate of the damage to "Rose"... $3892.07 to repair the hood, hood retainer, radiator, serpentine belt pulleys (all), battery, left headlight and indicator, left foglight bracket and lamp, and other sundry parts on the top of the engine. (Bambi hit high-er on the left front half of Rose.)
SF has offered me $4774.53 in compensation.
I have no pics to post as I have no transportation at this time, and I never thought to take photos.

FURTHER UPDATE
Have been looking at AutoGurus.com and AutoTrader.com... finding LOTS of Foresters. Is that bad? I've found a couple legacy's and at least one Impreza hatchback.
I need SLI's help figuring out JUST which model of Subaru is going to be the best for my new-to-me car that will likely wind up delivering pizza through the winter until I can find a REAL job. 86bratman can tell you, winters in Appalachia are nasty. you get LOTS of slush and ice, and it's more vertical than horizontal out here.
I also do a lot of tooling around the Tri-Cities of TN, and a good bit of Civil War reenacting in NC, GA, TN, VA, so I wind up hauling some of the gear for the crew.

$4775 is not bad for an insurance payout on a 99. Did you ask what the buy-back would be? If you could get around $4k and the car back, I would say.. buy something else and part out the old one.

$4774+ was the payout for the claim and they keep the car.
I haven't the knowledge, or the space to get the car parted out, and the hood is sealed to the latch... I don't have the tools.

My father, in one of his rare helpful moments has sent me 30 links on 12 Foresters between 02 and 07 with fewer than 115k. I've investigated similar year Legacy's, Outback's and Impreza's. Budget, with MOM's generosity (digging a hole in their retirement fund as a loan), is $8250 to drive off the lot.

I wouldn't take the loan from your parents. For that amount of money, you should be able to find something that will replace your Subie. I bought my 98 with 170xxx miles for $3k, although it was probably inflated up here in expensive ass NY. You can find plenty for that price. Don't lean on the parents for this one.

Yeah, I agree that with the payout you should be able to get a new car without the loan from your parents. Bummer about the car, sounds fixable for someone with the tools and space.

Foresters are fine, they are less common than outbacks in my area, so I usually see Outbacks cheaper than Foresters. Impreza, Legacy/Outback, Forester, you'll be fine in all of those. I would steer away from the 98 Forester as that had the slightly more troublesome DOHC engine.

Also, on the older models check for rear quarter panel rust, especially in the Imprezas.

Just bought a pretty clean 1997 Outback in Virginia for $2500. $4k should be plenty enough to get you into something fairly well taken care of on Craigslist. KBB for many Legacys and Outbacks are around $2500 or so in very good condition. That should give you plenty of room to find something that will run, even if it's not in the greatest of shape.

Hell, I saw a couple of really clean looking cars floating around in the $1250 range, although they weren't Subaru's.

They are actually giving you a nice payout and that is a bit of a shock from that company. Keep shopping, it's a buyers market right now and cars will pop up, you just need to be on it. I'm actually trying to sell a friends 96 OB with 240k on it for $1900. You will find something, just need to keep looking.

Don't be afraid to spend less on one that may have a cleaner body or better features, but needs head gaskets. You can get decent cars if you buy one that needs them and haven't overheated too much then. Buy one, fix it with the leftover money, profit.

Well, I DID find one '02 Forester w 118k on it at Auto Hause in Swannanoa, NC that needs a head gasket, a brake caliper, new tires, a windshield and some VERY MINOR interior parts... $4300.

Leggacy, Impreza and Fozzy are all pretty much exactly the same vehicle in that age group. The Legacy is the biggest/longest. Foz has the highest roof. But drivetrain wise, they are all pretty comparable. I almost went with the Foz over my legacy. But in the end, I am glad I didnt. I paid 2700 for Ruby my 98 outback 5 years ago with 120k on her, and I havent paid more then $600 for the other 3 legacy wagons I bought, including my 99 LTD. Forester sounds like the way to go for you, but 4k with a blown HG is Crazy stupid money. I Might buy this 02 in my area with a HG issue, zero rust, needs a front bumper for 1k. Still a driver.

Honestly, you are going to need to relax at least one of your limits here.. Either year, price, miles, or distance. You are not going to find a cheap, local, low-mile, under 10 year old subaru.

Is the extra $2500(ish) the subject of their approval on this? If so, just take the insurance payout and buy something with it. You can get quite a bit of subaru for ~$4500..

You are looking at the exact wrong time of year to buy a Subaru though, right as winter is starting is the worst time to shop for Subaru deals.

You're not wrong Nepbug. With the knowledge that a 1997 Outback in excellent condition is listed on KBB for $2450 though, there might be some wiggle room for OP to bring the prices down on something (like that '98 listed for $3300). There's no (good) reason for an individual seller to expect to get much better than KBB best case prices. Once they are made aware of those prices, they may be willing to take a lower offer as an obo price.
