TylerHartman's 1999 Legacy GT Wagon 5SPD

Well on Tuesday, November 18th at 4 am I was on eBay and Came across a 99 Legacy GT Wagon with a Blown Engine over 2,100Miles away ending at 5:00 PM. Long story short I ended up winning the car...

The Car: 1999 Legacy GT Wagon 5 Speed with Sunroof. Pretty Rare combo I've heard, It has a 137,000 Miles and Suffers from two dents from the pictures I can see and a Knocking engine, although the dents and engines are Aye-Okay in my book since I've been watching for a Rust Free, 5 Speed wagon here in Indiana/Ohio for a while and haven't found anything this clean or sweet.

True story, I want to replace it with subaru so that's a plus ;) I know it looks great and it since it sits lower too its like mini short shifter IMO. Snagged it off a guy on Instagram Cheap. It matches my steering wheel too ;)

Like most people, I tend to get bored with things after a while but for me, those 2004 STi wheels just keep looking better and better. How much if any did you have to roll or pull your fenders to get them to fit? Also nice seats!
He actually shouldn't have had to do anything to run those STi rims since they are the 5x100's, with the +53 offset they fit the same as the GTB wheels do. I run the 5x114's with a 17mm spacer on STi springs on my wagon with no problems.

I think the way I responded was confusing.. I have on my 97 LGT Wagon 17" GTB (17x7 +55) wheels that are the same size and offset as the STi 5x100's (17x7.5 +53), I am currently running 05 STi springs w/ 1/4" saggy butt spacers on KYB AGX struts. I haven't had to roll or pull my fenders for this setup, even when I was using Tein S springs I never rubbed on the fenders (fender liners in the front, absolutely).

I can account for being able to use the 05-07 STi (17x8 +53) wheels with a 17MM lug converting spacer and haven't had any issues with clearance with my fenders with the same suspension setup (05 STi springs, KYB AGX, and Saggy Butt spacers).. The nice thing about stock Subie wheels is ridiculously high offset they use, it leaves a lot of freedom to interchange them.

Sorry i've been slow on Updates/Getting Work done but..

Wiring harness's is getting sent into iWire Tomorrow, I have a 91-94 (94) Legacy Turbo Steering rack, Cross Member, and Sway Bar on order. I need to verify the rack will bolt straight onto my Column, Plan On cleaning everything up and getting new bushings. To anyone lurking what arms can I bolt straight onto this? any arms that will fit a GC8 STI I'm assuming?

That's a heck of an update! Your car is similar to the car that I want my '99 wagon to grow up into! I have so many parts for it that I haven't put on because of a minor front end accident, but it's slowly coming around. Something about white second-gen. wagons!

Out of curiosity, how much did it cost to have iWire do their thing? I have heard a lot of good things about them, but I have no idea how much they charge.

(not that I am planning on using them.. I would do my own merge if I needed one, I am just curious)

I was planning on doing it myself, but figured I'd have the peace of mind it was done right the first time�� So my harness merge was a little more then a straight up swap. I sent in a 04 WRX harness 5SPD + 99 LGT Harness 5 Speed. He deleted TGV's and added in AVCS. My bill was $910 for that. It's also pre wired for DCCD pro if that tickles your fancy.

Are the axles you're using just standard R180 Impreza-length STi axles? Back-checking part numbers at RockAuto makes it seem that there are some differences between the lengths of a Legacy and Impreza axle, but that could just be housing width of the R180 or shape of the rear hub. For that matter, is the wheel bearing in the new knuckle any larger than the Legacy wheel bearing?

The wheel bearing is more beefy but i'm not sure how much deeper it is. That said today I put the front togther and I had no issues and all the axles look to be fine. I'm runnning the full hubs, knuckles, dust covers, etc.. so I should be good. I'll let me know if I come across any issues, but Thus far it all looks perfect.

Oil pan came crushed, So started fresh by upgrading to the 06+ STI EJ25 Oil pan, EJ25 Killer B pickup, and Killer B Windage tray. So i'm selling the EJ20 Pickup now ;D

Got a good deal on clean zero shaft play VF48 with Cobb Waste Gate stopper from a guy returning to stock
Will be slightly laggy but on my 205 with AVCS, and Higher comp, Better cams, Might even get it on Flex fuel before the Shortblock :D it should be fine till I build an EJ22E/T or EJ257 Shortblock. (Leaning towards, EJ22)

Been starting it up for a few mins here and there letting it idle, it's starting up at about 1,500rpm or so at cold start then idles up to 2,000 then kicks down to 1,200. I feel like my CEL's and vac leak are causing this. I need to read CEL's tomorrow but I should have one for TGV's, one for Catless.

I don't want to let it run Open downpipe too long, it's so loud my aunt and uncle that live down the road, actually heard it running lol.

I managed to drain 6-7 Gallons of the old gas out, Got 5 Gallons of BP 93 Octane in there along with a brand new fuel filter. My goals are to clean out the tank as much as possible over the next few months since I plan to be running E85 at somepoint.

I also managed to grab a JDM BG steering wheel shroud Boost gauge, it'll be a few months till I have it tho.

Check list for the car

WRX Gas Pedal (On the way)
Power Steering return rubber line
Hoodscoop shroud
finish interior
fill rear diff
check all subframe bolts etc with TQ Wrench
modify eBay exhaust
Change oil after it's been running for a few hours

no we didn't leave the rear that crazy low with camber. just seeing where we wanted to sit the car. It's about the same height as the front, deff going to need rolled in the rear.

Thank You and Oh she is, Even though my car is Heavier and on a stock tune. It pulls just as hard if not harder then my Friends basic Bolt on Tuned EJ205Swapped 2.5RS. Partly Due to AVCS, Higher Comp and Closer ratio. But still I wasn't expecting it to be that good off the bat. Super impressed and excited for what the Future holds with it.

Well I haven't updated this in a hot second so let's go... Since my Last Update I've Rolled the rear Fenders, I had my friend help me bleed the brakes a few times I must have had a massive airlock because now the brakes are way solid. there's still a good bit of travel in the pedal but that's partly due to having a MC Setup to run 2/1 Pots and I'm Running 4/2 pots, Me and My Dad have started work fabbing up the exhaust this bit is taking a bit as we're doing this on my Gravel driveway with limited tools in our freetime but it's all tacked up and we need to tack a hanger or two and then take it off for final welding. I have Sourced a few little parts (I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff) Defi Genome STI Boost gauge, i30 Auto Dimming Mirror, Although I'm unsure I'll use it I got a Sunroof Deflector off of a 99 Legacy Wagon at the junkyard.

here's a picture of the Exhaust, Yes before ricer claims. Yes the Tip is hanging out a good bit but that's because I think I'll end up upgrading to a nicer muffler later. Muffler is pretty crappy and it's more a less going to be straight piped. I'll probably run this a bit and get a nice muffler that won't get every cop in 50 miles coming my way and something a little more refined.

Nicely done! Did you get your front interior door grabs installed? I modified the front window switch trims to accept the interior door handles and everything else bolted right up.
Have you had any issues with your Kartboy front endlinks not jiving with your aluminum control arms? I have a similar setup and was a bit concerned about the odd angle of the aluminum control arms (I have yet to install) and the dog bone style endlink.
I noticed a few posts back you were looking to source a hatch wing. I have a BG Tommy Kaira wing for sale if you are interested.

Nothing huge to update! Just been driving it and enjoying it, I'm planning to start cleaning up the interior soon. Here's a To-Do List for winter/early spring

-Look into new seats, the Ver8 STI Seats are too high for my liking and I want to be able to use the wagon for AutoX and the Dragstrip. (No Helmet would fit right now with the short roof + Sunroof)

-Fix HVAC Cable Clip

-Mod USDM 97-99 Door pods to work with Door grabs

-New Shift boot

-New OEM Shift knob (keeping the Cobb, just want to try something new)

-Figure out a better system to mount my gauges, Might go to a GD Clock pod style thing. Just hate to cut up my Perfect dashboard

-Find Defi Cable for boost gauge

-Working on picking up a JDM rear strut tower brace and few others brace parts

Spring/next year.

-New Muffler, That isn't a Crappy eBay one.

-New Front Wheel Bearings (Front, Drivers side is Bad)

-Possibly Dial in a little bit of camber for grip and possibly to solve rubbing issues

-HKS EL Header

-Window Tint

+Bodywork + Foglights and consider cutting up front bar for a Front mount intercooler.

and my friend Zeke (@Thedeadhp) sourced me an EJ253 Long Runner Intake Manifold That will be making it's way onto the car in time once I get the ball rolling on a Front mount. it'll need some work but given what they flow and the cost they can be had for it's worth the work.

Yeah, pains me to say it, but they are now "Old". I got the Beast when it was a 9 year old car, with only [70,000 miles] on it!!! And had onwed a 94 BG for two years prior to that... I really am seriously considering finding another black GTB to buy as a spare chassis, should the unthinkable happen to the Beast...

I've considered in a few years once I've got a place set up getting an extra for parts/spare chassis in case something bad happens like you mentioned :(

Picked up a Power outlet from an Outback, sadly unlike my Gen4 It was not prewired. so I need to run wiring for it soon. It's installed and I have a pigtail, so I need to run the wires and I'm set.

Well, Saturday On my way to a meet my wagon started idling rough, threw a CEL, and my AFR's went wack at idle, and wouldn't make any boost. After freaking out, Found out my Evap Nipple Block off blew off, Time to get a hold of an actul screw in plug to prevent that.

Thanks! I was just thinking how sad it was you no longer have your wagon, I'd have loved getting some pictures of them together.

I wish I'm just over the Ohio/Indiana line, Okeana is just a few mins away and they get TWC/Spektrum. Only Options for me are Cincy bell, Third Party Local Wireless Provider called Heaven Wire and Hughes net. Now at best I get 10mbps Down, and Maybe 1mbps Up.

I love the BBS's, I'm also super biased. I hate when I see people I know looking for cheap cast wheels when there's so many nice BBS's, etc.. Floating around on Japanese auction sites for cheap. I still wish I'd have gone with 5x114.3 Conversion. But I wasn't ever planning to go this far with this car hahaha :D I need to take the ride height up and or add camber, I'm having a slight rub on the guards/fenders yet and I can't go full steering lock :p

Picked up supplies to start work on the body

Also found out my seats have gotten mold on the way over in the shipping container so the seller is trying to fix it but we'll see how that goes.

I've ordered a 2004 STI Steering rack, and Cusco Carbon Fiber Rear Strut Brace and a 5,000mi old 2017 VF48 Turbo. Seriously dumb clean.

I just got a Grimmspeed Belt guard, GroupN 6MT Mount, and Tomei Blue Elbow in the mail today.

If it makes you feel better, they were in a 250T that got taken to the tip (rubbish dump, I dunno if you have that slang), and I grabbed the last minute to save them from destruction.

Oh, and hey, we can be CUSCO carbon rear brace buddies! (As well as BBS buddies) I just need to install mine...

Hahaha :P I mean, they'd make sweet Workshop chairs. you'd feel bad though after you sat in some lame as USDM Seats

The 250T seats at least they don't have the as cool pattern as the GTB/TS-R IIRC, at least they were saved ;) Took a little modification to make it fit on my USDM rear Cross member, Next up I need to install the lockdown Bolts. I tried to do it all at once but Looks like I need to loosen the crossmember to make them fit so I'm waiting to tag team install it with some other parts then get an alignment. You have to get the BBS's on man;)

You’re not wrong, the 250T pattern is a bit more funky that the GT’s. And yup, have the BBS’s mounted. For the lock bolts, make sure you have a M12x1.25 thread chaser to clean out the gunk. A tap will work too, but you gotta be a bit more careful.

Good and bad update.

-The Liberal wing I ordered along with a bunch of other parts got sent in two boxes. well, FedEx Lost everything, but I got the package with just wing (Not the extensions parts or mounts) Hoping they can find it, if not then I'll be having to custom make the extensions. I'm facebook friends with one of the only owners I know of with one of these wings in the USA so he's going to attempt to get me as many pictures and info as possible to hopefully make this work if it doesn't work out.

-Back when I bought the front Bumper, I asked the seller what else he had for his legacy he was parting out, I got the rainguards, and I also bought a rear skirt all in a package deal. at the time it was cold out and threw it in the shed and kinda forgot about it. After pulling it out I started to notice it was a special piece. Sent some pictures to subaru_styles. The king of JDM IMO. Turns out it's an Aero majic Piece. Looks super nasty with the Liberal Wing. Now I'm kinda of wanting to locate the Aero majic Garnish Mid Spoiler

Anyone thinking they can just toss this on a USDM Bumper, it's taken some cutting and fiberglass work (Internally) to make it fit, it's almost there. not hard, but not bolt up either

The sound deadening may add weight but its right up there with the best mod I have done to my BK. I did everything floor, roof, doors, all of it. It was a pain in the ass but it make the ride so much nicer with it being quieter.

Good to see you were able to sort out the rest of your Liberal spoiler. Would have been a PITA to replace those.

Man that thing is tidy on the outside these days. Makes me want to get my A into G and do beast yo. My front end is savagely peppered with stone chips! Too much time stuck behind slow arse tourists!!! (Bad tourist drivers here is an extreme problem).

thanks! It's got tons of bug splats now :P Been driving it a lot more then I was pre-paint and exhaust work. But can you blame me, my daily is Auto :D This bumper was trashed with peppered stone chips too when I first got it but more due to trashy country roads :(

installed my Cusco Rear sway bar tonight, along with lower miles C links till I can come up with some upgraded end links

Sad update, JDM emergency after 9 months let me know I wouldn't be receiving the interior swap I was supposed to have in 2-3 months. Since I was starting to expecting this I started looking into other options. The only other BG5 GT-B Interior for sale I knew of was from the place I had bad luck with when I bought my Mirrors, Liberal wing, etc.. So I decided not to put my self thru that hassle again. I considered GC8 STI seats but they we're all beat for anything less then 1k-$800, GD seats sat way too high, and Recaros would have been cool but I was going to have 1K+ tied up in doing that by the time I got the ones I wanted and in the pattren I liked. fwa2500 had some JDM BH5 GT-B front seats (in amazing shape) for sale for a while so just locked in a deal with him, just need to pick them up from him.

Managed to acquire some other goodies on the way.. one of them is BG5 GTB door fabrics (the colors appear to match the BH5 GT-B seats) so now I just need to get ahold of a rear seat at some point.

I want to, but the pictures don't show the ugly truth on them :( they have deep marks and since they are a textured plastic and make them hard to repair and not notice :/ so I'm watching for cool jdm aftermarket set or just a clean USDM set to be my painting victims. New bumper and skirt are colored match, so skirts are my only thing left now. I'm excited to see it go to a good home :)

Adjusted the clutch pedal today, I've had a feeling it wasn't fully engaging making it hard to shift gears sometimes: update it's feeling better, still think I could back the threaded rod out a little more but it's promising, pedal feels much tighter.

Figured I should make a little exhaust clip, I'll make a better one soon. once these two care packages drop I'll do a video and some pics

Mine wont be as crazy though. just a ej205 from an 05 WRX. full exhaust, VF39? VF48? idk yet, STI TMIC, dark blue injectors, toon, uhhhh and a bunch of OEM replacement crap lol.

What did you do for gauges? I was planning on universal A pillar 3 pod or a 3 pod on the dash (universal, 3m tape lolz)

That's about all I'm going to be too for a while :) I have a VF48 sitting on my shelf, just need EWG, Injectors, EBCS, and I'd like to EL Header too but otherwise It's staying basic for the time being

I'll send you a picture tomorrow, but I have my boot gauge on my pillar, Wideband in the vent by the window and oil pressure in the vent above the radio :) worked out pretty well, although I might change it up soon

So up at night thinking to myself looking into the JDM heavens and an idea hit me. I want to do a cluster swap but a jdm bg5 cluster isn't an easy option due to electrical differences in the 98/99 models. and the GD Ver7 STI is my fav but leaves funky gaps on the side :/ well my friend has this cluster gauge pod that covers up all the gauges on the side.. Issue is ZOLVED and fixes my Wideband and oil pressure gauge in my vents. So pretty soon I will be buying a JDM Ver7 STI Non DCCD cluster from G-Rom cluster flashing, bought the cluster shorud so i'm set other then the cluster and pig tails!

I and my friends have been wondering how these eBay solid endcap rads are since there are no options for aftermarket rads in USDM 2G's other than these. if it holds up a while I'll have a nipple welded into it for my turbo coolant tank lines and bosses for a factory WRX Hard pipe so all my coolant stuff is as OEM as I can get! and for $110 shipped worth a shot

Yes, you lose the rumble. still sounds like a Boxer at below 5k, and above that, it sounds mean! it drives nicer, blip downshifts don't stumble and feels overall happier and so smooth closer to redline. overall I'm so happy with it, best thing I've done engine wise so far

Thanks! I love it way more than I first expected for this very reason, it sounds boxer below 5k, and EL comes out hard past 5,200+ under load. It's great, and feels happier too, so win-win. I just wish I had more redline to play with now:P Actually, plan to run the same turbo someday once I do me a built block but that's a ways away.

FX-R Projectors Retrofit using CustomBrackets&Designs(Hinyo) Brackets/mounts. Using the Harness and Ballasts from my old Honda element retrofit go figure, so part of that car lives on in this :P

Had someone tell me your can cut down a stock GD (02-07) WRX Air filter and it'll be roughly the same size as a Type D ARC filter. My engine came with the airbox and Blitz Drop in filter, so Cut it down and Bingo! Need to make an L bracket and Get the sticker now, but looks super baller. Doesn't quite make the sucky noises the Cobb SF did, but it's better in some regards for noise as it's not so in your face, maybe i'll just have to get a BOV now.

Installed the eBay rad, Cool-Nuts hoses, and Prova cap. Also, have the OEM style brackets drying from paint now so the zero/sports shroud can be mounted up semi correctly

Then started on making it work, first spent way too much time on making a Plug n Play adapter just for it to not work. Don't waste your time, flexible PCB's suck

so bought a pack of Tesa tape, yanked the dash and merged 3rd gen plugs in. turned out amazing and also put some outputs in for some stuff to come ;)
