Painted side skirts - let me know what you think

I just painted my skirts last week and just got around to putting the pics up, but im extremely happy how they turned out. It was alot easier than i thought needing about 5 hours and only spending $60 for 2 cans of paint and one primer. I took off the side skirts and painted them off the car but i painted the back one on the car. I did 2 coats of grey primer and then 3 coats of Rio Red (paint code 946) bought from the local NAPA store.

I like it! You should get that strip behind the rear doors in front of the rear wheels color matched as well, that would really complete the package.

Did you just get the paint code from subaru and have it sprayed at a shop?

i like it, it looks good. I'd say leave the black piece in front of the rear wheel, it adds a little bit of contrast.

but anyway, i think it looks real nice. i think in the near future i will be doing this also. the black skirts just dont look as good. i think when they are color matched it makes the car look lower.

thanks everyone, im probably going to leave the rubber in front of the rear wheels black and im really considering buying clear corners and tails. Can anyone give me a approximate cost and installation difficulty level?

Neither are very difficult. Do JDM tails though, I've never seen a set of clear taillights that don't look terrible. Of the two the side markers would be the most difficult, and I rate that at a 2 out of 5 at the most.

well i just ordered 3 cans of Glacier White paint from NAPA.... it will come in next week, then im gonna get down to it. i picked up the primer and clear already. i had to buy 5oz cans of the paint though. did you have to do the same? is 15oz of paint gonna be enough? i have to paint the front bumper as well.

Not sure if they were 5 oz cans or not JPAUL. The cans i bought were $20 a pop if that helps. If they are the same size that should be enough. A good idea is to try and suspend the skirts from a ceiling or something and paint them like that, way better paint coverage. Make sure you post pics when done, the white on white should look awesome!!! :grin:

well they are little cans of duplicolor paint. 5oz each.... i was thinking of buying a big can of white paint to shoot between the primer and the actual "glacier white" paint. that way i can use less of the color matched paint and get enough paint on there. any problems with this idea?

looks wicked, i remember when i first did that, makes a huge difference!!! and for the piece infront of the back wheel, i took it off and filled the holes :D looks a lot smoother!!! its worth it to do up!!

Also on a seperate note, someone should get the guy with the Japanese wag to send them the side mouldings they are very flat almost like they are shaved.

so this is the first time i have dealt with NAPA..... and im pissed. it has been 8 days now since i ordered/pay for my paint. and they dont have it yet. i called tonight and the guy said "try tomorrow the ups guy comes around noon". what? the UPS guy only comes on fridays at noon. i want my shit i paid for it!!!

well last night i went to get my paint at about 730pm. NAPA is closed. the sign on the door said open till 8!!!

i went back today and i said something about it cause the NAPA is like 20 minutes away from my house and i completely wasted my time last night to try and get it. he said "oh we close at 7 on fridays, its just not on the door sticker..." then i ask for my paint and he procedes to go out and take it off the shelf. MY 3 cans of paint, they put them on the shelf where someone else could have picked them up and bought them. and i had paid for the paint last week. I will never purchase anything from them again.

-i just repainted my side skirts and rear lip valence and used just walmart paint! cost is cheap and color is ALMOST PERFECT, check it out!

I am finally going to do this ... but I have one question.

The GT skirts and lower bumper lips are textured, where as I don't think that the Limited ones are.

from the pictures the paint looks smooth but, is it really, or do the dimples show?

Also do the limiteds have that black chuck of plastic in front of the rear wheel on them? I dont think so, but I cant remember if it is painted body color or if the holes are just filled.

I like the side skirts painted on ah alex car. The only thing missing is some JDM ness. Tails and head lights and grill will look so good on your car.

Ive got a few questions to ask about painting some stuff as well. I might pick up a JDM front bumper, and since most of them are already painted.. i need to know some stuff.

1. What type of scuff pad should i use to scuff everything down with. 3m red?

2. Once i'm done scuffing everything up real good, I can lay down the paint. I shouldn't need to wetsand in between coats as long as they are nice even coats correct?

3. When i put down the clear coat.. do i need to wetsand at all? If so.. what grit do you recommends?

I'm thinking I might paint my sideskirts as well sometime soon.. since they are getting a bit worn. I also have a few other spots on the car I would like to paint.

Say for instance i had a small area i wanted to paint on the door.

Would I just mask off a square area on the door, and everything else around.. then scuff / paint. Or should I sand / primer / paint / clear / wet sand in order to make it blend with the rest of the paint on the door?

Also, i plan on using napa paint code matched spray cans. Can anyone recommend this stuff? I know paintscratch is a good source.. but WAY too expensive!

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

d1giPhux, great question on scuffing. I dont know how that will turn out with the textured skirts. They will need a good wipe down prior to paint that is for sure.

As for spoting in on a door panel .... you will have much better results just getting the entire panel painted. You will always see the spot otherwise.

I have found that a good portion of the cost of body work is materials. If you are having a door painted anyway, it usually isnt that much more to have say some side skirts sprayed at the same time.

I have never had spray bomb paint hold up as well as a pro job. I had a bumper, skirts and mirrors painted a while ago for around $400. The difference between that finish and the spray bomb finish is VERY noticable. The spray bomb always seems rougher, although perhaps only because I went too light on the coats because the first time it ran like crazy.

The reason I asked about the texture in the first place was because the body shop wasnt sure how the side skirts would turn out ....

^ DAMN! where did you get that stuff painted at. I asked around here for a local shop to paint my front bumper, handles, and a spot on the door, and they wanted $1200... nuts huh? I dont know why a shop job would hold up any better than a spray can job of the same type paint if done properly.. i mean, it would still be clear coated and prepped correctly. But thanks for the info.

What I mean is that it doesn't look as glossey. Like I said could just be my workmanship .... Orange peel maybe.

I took the parts in off the car .... Price was for scuff, prime and paint only. I am hoping for a similar deal for my sube stuff.
