Can anyone show me or explain to me the actual differences between the two variations of the STI rack? What differentiates one style from the other? If I was buying one, how would I confirm it was an 04, not an 05-07?

Will the 04 rack bolt directly up? Will the 05-07? If not, what can I do to make it work. I have a lot of fabrication experience, can weld and have access to all kinds of plate steel

Basically, the top steering rack looks like the 2004 sti (like your stock one), bottom is the 05-07 sti rack (like newer cars, 05+ legacy, etc).

From the research I've done, it looks like you'd just need the matching crossmember to use the newer rack. You would gain fixed mounting points on one side of the rack, seemingly making the feel of the steering input more solid. If both utilize urethane bushings, though, it might be impossible to tell the difference.
