View Full Version : 3rd Generation Sedan (BE) Muse's '02 H6 VDC "Blitzen 6" - the un-update!
Well, once again, the Blitzen is changing hands, and so is this thread. I'm taking over the care of this awesome car, and it could not have come at a better time for me. With two blown up EJ25s and a dead-nuts unreliable Audi in my fleet, I need something that I can be sure is going to get me where I need to go.
And what better car to do it in than the car I fell in love with, all the way back in 2014?
I'll be sure to keep the thread updated, as things progress, and I do have some plans for this beauty. Nothing too drastic, but certainly enough to keep it fresh.

holy mother of god that is impressive but if you gonna buy h6 are you positive that you'll be able to use legacy sheet metal? the outback skin at least is wider and suspension is made to match thats why 00-04 legacies have 53mm offset while outbacks come with 48mm and much larger tires. not sure if you'll be able to use those rims with outback size tires and not rub on those nice bilsteins. just a thought though dont get discouraged yet. dont settle for stock exhaust build your own or get aftermarket cause if and most likely it is the same as h6 and it just sucks balls.

Thanks guys. You know what? I originally wanted to convert to the SportShift they have here too, but I had a few problems.
1) I can't find a steering wheel that has BOTH cruise control and SportShift switches.
2) That transmission never came with the RS30/Blitzen6, and looking through the service manuals things don't really match up, so I don't know how easy it would be to make it work.
3) The transmission is just so heavy!

That's why I'm still wanting to get doors. Then the exterior should all match up (except the rear quarter, but I have a plan...). Also, I'm going to be effectively changing all the footwork of the Outback. I won't be using Outback tires or any of that either, so I'm hoping there won't be an issue.

? Do you mean the plastic light covers on the front door panels? I thought everybody had that... I don't have lights until I get the doors.

Really curious what you'll do about the rear quarters. I'm assuming this is being done on a usdm car. Fenders are tighter to the car than usdm as I found out the hard way, was thinking of swapping in jdm doors but the rear quarters would still need to be replaced or "Modified" was not willing to go that far.
Good luck. Your list of part is as impresive as mine for my conversion.

Do you have a parts list I could see? Your rides thread doesn't list much.... and I'd like to see what else I could do. The only thing I don't have is the gauges, but I'm already looking for RS30 gauges.
RS30 isn't common here, so finding stuff is difficult and takes time (Hence, my problem with the hood).

Can't wait to see how this turns out, a great list of parts you have here. A couple questions for you though, do those rear aero spats on the B4 bumper fit USDM bumpers and do you happen to have part numbers for the Cusco front and rear strut tower bars? Thanks a bunch.
How close are you to buying a car? Seems like you have nearly all the parts you need/want for now anyways...

I have no idea if the rear aero fits on the US bumpers. Somebody else may be able to answer that.

As for buying a car, I won't be arriving in the US until sometime this winter. The car has to wait until then. I will be looking for an '03 Legacy Outback VDC Sedan in either Black Granite Pearl or Titanium Pearl and I will accept nothing else. It should still be easier to find than the S401 was, so I'm not sweating it.

I finally found a GT30 illuminated gauge set! Still no hood though. Well, none without damage anyway. And it looks like I'll be getting the doors for free. That is, as long as wagon doors fit the sedan... I'll test fit the rears on the S401 when I am given the donor car.

Okay, so I've been looking online for the car I will get for this project. It seems all the candidates have 100+ mi on the odometer. Are there any problems I should be keeping an eye out for? Are there any regions of the US I should avoid more than others? What else should I be paying attention to?
The things I'm looking for so far:
1) 2003 Outback Sedan H6. 2003 was the only year that had the dark interior. I'd prefer 2004, but there were no dark interiors that year (as far as I know).
2) Color must be Black Granite Pearl or Titanium Pearl. They were the only colors that had the dark interior. I'm having the whole car painted WR Blue Pearl in the end, so the color is only important for the interior.
3) McIntosh audio package. I suppose I could retro-fit if I can't find a car with it.
What else should I be looking for?
Reason
06-27-2010, 08:32 AM
You could always swap interiors, but that would be a task all in its self to find one. If you plan on looking anywhere in the US, I would keep New england and Northern US last since most of the cars would have rust on the under carrige and engine bays.
Yamazaki
07-06-2010, 04:40 AM
So the wife (this'll be the wife's car, afterall) okay'd the WR Blue Pearl (or Blue Mica in Japan) paint job, as long as the interior is decked out in pink or..... "something cute". :smt011
Found a number of the Outback sedans with the dark interior, but none of them are VDC... so still looking. Although, as I said before, interior color might not be an issue anymore....

Yamazaki
07-06-2010, 09:42 AM
Cool, thanks. Yeah, I don't want to have to change it all out. Although if I have to do it up to her "specifications", then most of it will be custom anyway. It'll depend on a couple things:
1) If I can even find a VDC with dark interior and,
2) How bad I want a third blue Subie.

No. 2 and 3 don't look too bad, but with rust you really don't know the extent of the damage until you grind all the rust off down to bare metal. If its just on the surface you can just hit it with rust inhibiting primer and put a top coat on it.

is there any specific reason for wanting 04? i know some of the 02 came with black interior. as far as vdc and McIntosh goes i would opt out any aftermarket stereo will be more up to date and vdc is just another heavy and expensive thing that can fail on you. just my opinion.
Yamazaki
07-16-2010, 11:57 AM
I want '03. '04 didn't have a black interior option. '02 doesn't have digital HVAC controls. That' leaves '03. And no, the McIntosh system in my S401 (which is the same in the VDC outbacks) is far better than aftermarket systems I've experienced. Keep in mind that it was designed specifically for that car and it's just as high-end as the ones in Audis, BMWs, and Mercedes Benz's. I can't explain it because it's something that has to be experienced. As for the VDC, I've been sold on all the brochures I have. I just wish the US had the ADA system, which was the predecessor to the Eyesight system (also not available in the US).
EDIT: Okay, so I was wrong. The '02 has auto HVAC also. That opens up my options. I'll include '02 in my search. I've actually already found a couple, but I don't live in the US, so I can't register/store them.

Well, I finally gave up and settled for a turbo hood. So I was able to put the hood, grille, lights, and bumper on the would've-been donor car to get an idea how my project will look. I didn't bolt/fasten anything down to take the picture, so the parts are all just kind of sitting there.
Before and after pic of the donor car:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/ (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF2872_zpsjadm7x9x.jpg.html) http://krenicki.com/ForumPictures/Vehicles/2002-BEE-Blitzen/th_DSCF2930_zps87bapqfm.jpg (http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/rkrenickisli/media/Car%20Galleries/2002%20BEE%20Blitzen/DSCF2930_zps87bapqfm.jpg.html)
It doesn't even look like the same car! I just wish I could've found a non-turbo hood....

Now this car will be even more Blitzen! The driver's seat needs a little refurbishing, but knowing how hard this is to come by, I don't really care. With all of this taken care of, I am only looking for a muffler now.
Question for Dodik (or anybody else who knows) - Are the regular Legacy mufflers compatible with the 3.0 H6 Outback sedan? Or does it have different places for the hangars, piping, etc?

Why don't you just have an exhaust made?
dodik

yeah h6 muffler is somewhat odd it has bypass pipe im not sure if its the same as legacy location wise but it will be mad easy job with a small welder to relocate hangers. im just waiting for my to rust thru so i can build the whole system from scratch. if you dont have a welder any exhaust shop will do it pretty cheap.

Really? How much was it? Was the driver's seat in the same condition? If so, then I know at least one yard where RPMgarage gets their stuff. Web stores charge way too much, so I don't buy from them. My prices tend to undercut web store prices, so that should show that I don't get stuff from them.

I dont remember, but the prices was for the seat covers only. All sold separatly. They also had the Momo steering wheel with maching blue leather.

Okay, definitely different place then. Wait a minute... Seat covers? There are no seat covers on these. The seat itself is the blue/black leather.
EDIT: okay, I just checked out rpmgarage.... They have some seriously false advertising going on there... :smt011

The seats were complete, but because of the weight they mostly just sold the leather. But you also have to consider the fact that they arent a brand-specific shop. They got a lot of cars they strip so for them to be a 100% accurate in the description is nearly impossible. I myself is very pleased with the customer service they provide.
Tough if i win the lottery i will finish my JDM dreams easily by importing a S401/Blitzen and get it registered with LHD.

Besides the bonnet/hood, it looks the same as our Liberty "RX" Wagon's.
Have you got pictures of the RSK interior?
I left a reply in your Parts from Japan thread too.

Are you saying ALL the B4s have that interior?! The interior was an option for the RSK here, but very few actually have it. Most of the '02-'03 Blitzens have the dual-color interiors. As for the picture of the car, yeah, it looks just like a run-of-the-mill GT. Nothing special, that is, until you bring it to the US... And when you combine EVERYTHING (not just the front) I have for this project, well then it's even a little special here.
Here are pictures of the doors (yeah, I know, one of them is white :smt012):

Hmm, the driver/passenger switches are different sizes here. Looks like I will still have to do some interior magic after all.
Why don't you just have an exhaust made?
Since it seems like it'll be irritating finding one that fits that I like, I'll just take the muffler that's on the S401 now and use that one and have a shop fab something. I'll reinstall the electronically controlled variable exhaust on the S401.

I'm thinking that you can just transfer over the switch panels from whatever US car you'll be putting those doorcards into onto the new doorcards...no need to mess with the wiring as you're keeping the switches. The only thing that would require some wiring and modification is the folding mirrors if you are putting those on as well.

The "donor car" turned out to be crap. So not a single part is coming from it. I wanted to use the doors, but they were all rusted so I went to a junkyard and bought some. That wagon was scrapped a couple weeks after the pictures were taken.
The sticker pack can be ordered from any dealer.

I've been keeping a log of every '02-'03 H6 that comes on the market that I can find. I record year/milage/price/VIN/color/location/and if it's VDC or not. I have 55 so far. Only a few are acceptable.

So in my quest to get the '02-'03 Blitzen foglights, I found out that I can get the lights for about $100 new. Just not from Subaru. They aren't special, they're just regular aftermarket fogs (from CIBIE) that Subaru slapped in there and called them unique so they could charge whatever they felt like.

What's the ETA on getting this project started, it's gonna be amazing to see it all come together... Do you happen to have the part number for the Cusco Underbody Brace and how do you know it will work on the USDM chassis?
Blue Steel Mica would look amazing on this car and I think it would go extremely well with the interior... Have you figured out what color you're going with?

I can't start it until I return to the US (I can't buy/register a car if I'm not there, right?).
I don't have any part numbers off hand. I'm sure you could check CUSCO's site and find it... and I'm guessing it'd work on US-spec cars since this one's for NA Legacys.
I don't know yet what color I want it. To be honest, I'm not too terribly concerned about it right now since I don't plan to return in the near future. When I've figured out when I will return and I start looking for a car, I'll re-visit the issue.

Geez I hate that term. The D model is only the second revision of the BE/BH generation (it was revised twice)...... so I would think if you HAVE to use the term "revision", it'd be a "revision B" or "revision 2" if anything.
Anyway, If you have read the whole thread you will know that I do not have a car to put the parts on, But I fitted them on an A model car with no problems.

Subaru called them Rev A, B, C, D and E, so why can't you?
I understand what you mean thou - "facelift" would be easier.

Japan never did.... That's why it says "Applied Model Code" next to the model code on your ID plate instead of "Revision".
EDIT: Can somebody show me where Subaru officially calls them that as I am having trouble finding it? I can't even find it in cars101.com

I cant even read Japanese but Yamazaki you are correct...
Example 1) http://www.sti.jp list each Letter change as "タイプ" which is translated to "Type"
Example 2) http://www.sti.jp specifically list "適応車種記号" as "An adaptation car model symbol"
http://www.sti.jp/parts/bebh_legacy/readme.html (DO NOT USE GOOGLE TRANSLATOR its GARBAGE!)
So to sum this up.. Legacy BE Model D Rev #
Also to add the model changes stopped at D. No E.... BobbyJimmy your thinking of the BL/BP models which goes to F.

thanks mate. I am aware there were no changes for Rev A to C but the problem is probably due to a mis-understanding. For instance this kanji -> ? (k/gata) is used beside the letter which means style/type. I believe the same kanji is used to indicate 'revision' in other Subaru's. Therefore you have some confusion between revision and style. Its not really that important that people understand that there was two revisions IMO.
chuckthefuk
02-18-2011, 07:56 PM
You clearly don't know Yamazaki !
And style / type have nothing to do with Revision. Style D / Type D are still somewhat a simile to Model D. Revision is similar to Change / Update

yeah, thats what I was trying to say above. I guess I wasnt clear. Basically, the same kanji is used too represent model/revision/style/type, this means that there is widespread confusion as the Kanji is misleading.

What Chuck meant was that I speak/read Japanese. I explain all the terms and phrases here: https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?10738
The kanji is not misleading if you can read it. That character you typed doesn't ever mean revision.

Okay, so the parts collection isn't done. I forgot I still need swaybars (front and rear), rotors, pads, and an adapter for the rear brakes (and I'd still like to find a set of FHI 2pots for a decent price...).
Then there's whatever else I haven't though of that I would have to change on a US Outback to the Blitzen.

Nope. I move to the US in February and will aquire a car then. After I have settled in and everything, this project will finally take off (i.e. actual work instead of just parts gathering)!

You know, I have always wondered... what the heck is VDC????
chuckthefuk
02-29-2012, 02:44 AM
"VDC is Vehicle Dynamics Control, Subaru's electronic stability control system with traction control. VDC is also the name of an Outback Limited model from 2001-2004. The components of the VDC system are:
Direction: uses brakes to slow down wheels to reduce spin and help control vehicle direction.
Skidding: yaw and steering wheel sensors use brakes to slow down spinning wheels and re-direct power to the wheel(s) with the best traction to re-gain control.
Engine power: controls engine output to slow spinning by reducing spark to cylinders to cut back power and help re-gain control." - cars101
and while we're at it.
"VTD AWD (variable torque distribution). New in 2001, VTD transfers powers front to back electronically. The power split is 45/55 front/rear and the rear wheel bias is designed for a more luxury car feel as opposed to the front bias of the Active AWD system. Usually 45/55 front to back split but that varies according to wheel slippage. VTD includes VDC (vehicle dynamics control) Subaru's electronic stability control system with traction control" - cars 101

you have to undo the plastic covers on the A/B/C pillar. You can get away with just loosening the seat belts and shimming the plastic out of the way.

We had to go somewhere with her car so I took out the driver seat and put in the two "Blitzen" seats. Today some more progress was made...
I didn't want to lose the power driver seat when I put in the "Blitzen" seat, so I took apart the Outback seat to see how easy it would be to put the motorized base onto the "Blitzen" seat. I couldn't keep the heater element because it would just be too difficult to reassemble it without messing it up. In the end, I was successful with the motorized seats for both driver and passenger (the passenger seat was a driver seat for Japanese cars and required no modification). Here are some pics:

Okay, after that last post I decided to get something done. So I tackled the trunk and taillights. I had a few interesting discoveries along the way too.
1) US trunks have an emergency escape lever on the inside of the trunk. The Japanese trunks have nice trunk lining instead.
2) The key cylinder doesn't fit into the clip of the other trunk. So I swapped the whole lock assembly. But now the trunk release in the cabin doesn't work because somehow the lever that releases the trunk is too short.
3) The wiring harness had different plugs. Instead of cutting and soldering, I just swapped the entire trunk wiring harness.
4) Even the bulb covers for the taillights are made in different places (even though they're identical in shape).
5) This isn't a new discovery, but now that I have a Japanese trunk the liscense plate doesn't line up with the bolt holes. I have to make a bracket for that tomorrow...

Also, I'm curious, why did you swap trunks? Just to be as close to replicating an actual blitzen as possible or does the blitzen spoiler have different mounting points that wouldn't fit a predrilled USDM trunk?Well, that. And I found the trunk w/spoiler and centerpiece for $150 and couldn't pass it up considering I normally have to pay twice that for just the spoiler. So I figured doing a trunk swap was easier than drilling new holes for the spoiler.

Minor but potentially devastating update: I knew going into this that the US model is 1 inch wider than the Japanese model, but I'm starting to see how that little bit affects things. It actually makes these cars fundamentally different. I am running into serious fitment issues with the interior trim pieces (they aren't wide enough) as well as the rear seats. Apparently the US Legacy has more seat room as well; the Japanese seats aren't long enough to reach both the bolt holes in front AND the part that connects to the back of the seat. I'll post pictures tomorrow. I'm tired and a little disheartened.
I hope this isn't a precursor of things to come....

I actually did add the emergency release to the Japanese trunk, but there's only one bolt hole for it. It's under the liner anyway so it isn't going anywhere.
And I am keeping the US parts until I have ensured that the Japanese parts fit.

Wow that's crazy that they would bother changing so much for 1 inch. I would have thought any differences would be mostly cosmetic or at worst bolt-on, like the bumper beam. You could possibly get some brackets made up, but then if they aren't wide enough, I dunno.
Yamazaki
06-05-2012, 11:14 AM

...which doesn't matter since they don't even match at the top. The Japanese trim is straight and flat at the top, the US one has a slight curve that is very apparent when you try to install the Japanese one.

You can easily get proper gauge bar and bend it to the U shape you need .. Apply a bit a heat from a lighter or torch to the tips of the U and then just push it into the foam. Easy peasy...

So the Outback factory alternator makes 90 amps.... this one is 180. I will be installing a power inverter and outlet so that's why I wanted the upgrade.
My phone camera doesn't take wide angle pictures well, so pics of the interior will have to wait until I find my camera's battery charger.

Did the Japanese center console fit?

That part did. But I believe it may be identical to the US LGT model because the US front part dropped in perfectly.

Were you able to fix the bottom back seat issue?
Yamazaki

Nope. I haven't even looked at it after that first day. I've been ignoring it while I dispose of crate 1 and it's packing material. I'll address it when I open crate 2 and get the doors and fenders out.

So are we gonna get into that one when I get there? Or are you gonna have that open before?

I'm opening up the crate next weekend probably. The rear window is getting installed this Thursday. I already checked, and there is a hole for the rear wiper assembly already there in the rear deck. No cutting necessary.

i dont think seat is an issue my hasnt been bolted in for the past 8 month, just hooked to the back. The two bolts holding the back are turned in by hand. It takes about 5 mins to have a folding rear seat with no tools

I opened the crate with the fenders and doors and put on a rear door just to check fitment....
Not good. Not good at all. The lighting wasn't very good so the pictures I took didn't turn out well and I've since put the Outback doors back on so I can't show how poorly the Japanese doors fit. Even the window glass is a different shape and it doesn't roll up properly.
But I'm not tossing in the towel just yet. I'm going to play around with different combinations of hinges (yes, the Japanese door hinges are different from the North American ones...) and see if it'll look better with ALL the doors, fenders, etc. on.
Also, I didn't think to get the moulding for the rear window, so that set me back a little and the rear window will be completed on Thursday.

So are you saying the actual frame above the window is a different shape on the US models than on the JDM models? I didn't think they varied that much.

I didn't think so either. I actually tried to see a side-by-side difference between the S401 and the Outback, but I couldn't tell just by eyeballing it. I will actually break out the measuring tape and get exact dimentions this weekend....
...maybe. I was drenched in sweat today and I hate the heat (I don't even like the mildly warm), so I may end up doing nothing with the car this weekend. Depends on weather.

What about possibly swapping the windows? I'm sure you thought about that already.

I did. It's a possibility.
But so is just getting Legacy doors here. Then I only really need to keep the Japanese door cards. I'll also be taking the McIntosh speakers out of the Outback doors and putting them into whatever ends up on the car. I wanted the lighter weight, but after actually weighing them on a scale I found out there's only 6 lbs difference between the Japanese and North American rear doors. The front doors may have more of a weight difference, but I won't know until I weigh both sets.

That junkyard near you may have a Legacy with the right doors.

It has two BH Outbacks. Mt Airy is even worse- no 3rd gens at all!
