View Full Version : Is my Legacy a BG or a BK?

Hey guys,

I've been trying to figure out if my Legacy is a BG or a BK and I'm having a hard time figuring out the difference. I think mine is a BK, but I'm not sure. Can someone teach me how to tell the difference, please?

BG has the raised roof like the outback. BK has the low roof like yours and my '97. I believe the low roof BK was a US model only.

That's interesting, I think the lower roof one looks a lot nicer, personally. I guess most people who get a station wagon would rather have more cargo space, so that sort of makes sense.

As Go Mifune said, the BG is the "step-roof" model. Only the 1996-1999 Legacy Outback in the US came in this chassis. The 1995 Legacy Outback and all other wagons from 1995-1999 were BK.

But, for future reference, the easiest way to check your chassis code is by the first two characters of the "Applied Model" on the VIN plate of your car. Up until 2006, it was on the left side strut pillar under the hood. After 2006, it was on a sticker on the right side B-pillar between the two doors.

Oh okay, the 4th and 5th character of my Legacy's VIN code say BK.
Great info, thanks! I feel pretty confident in being able to tell the difference now.

VIN isn't a great indicator of the model code, because it can change depending on the year or market. The "Applied Model" is what you want to look at. That's why it's called the model code and not the vehicle number (I don't mean that in a sarcastic way).

I see what you mean I think. Your referring to the plate that's riveted in the strut tower, yeah? I was going to looks at that to see, but my car is currently at the shop so I decided to see if I could find it in the VIN on my insurance paper instead.
