Copy and paste my post on LGT about my rust repairs...

Pulled away my passenger side fender to clean out the dirt and start eliminating rust... Was unpleasantly surprised when I found several inches deep of wet degraded debris rusting away the bottom of my fender... I'll post some nice shots of what came out when I get home today, I also repainted some rusted brackets in the engine bay.

NOW WE FIX IT! Well, kinda...

Cleaned up both of the fenders. Pretty straight forward. Pulled off the bumper, grill, headlights and fenders. (: Then i took a wire wheel to the rust, primed and painted it! The rust actually got pretty bad in some spots.

Side note, while I had the front end of the car off I took the time to take out my old horns and actually heat shrink and spade connect the hella horns on the front. So I officially have some better horns! Much louder than the stock ones and I didn't even run the upgrade relay.

Well you guys never knew that I even had issues, but I blew my headgaskets! overheated a few times and got tired of it. I drove the car to the subaru dealership I work at and started teardown. So here is the story!

I'm honestly not worried about lowering this car. It'll happen someday, just not now.

OH! Remember those coilovers? I bought them for 50$ traded them for a WRX 3 inch straight pipe and downpipe and then sold that for 150$, so a nice net profit of 100$!


WELL, SHE'S BACK!

Thank god, it took me long enough.

Here is what I did!

During teardown I used tape to keep the buckets in place so that I didn't need to keep mind of where they originally went. HERE IS A WARNING If you do it the way I did you will not be able to keep the head 100% clean and you will introduce alot of dirt and aluminum dust into the oil system... That means, bad.

Here is the table we used (made of soapstone I believe, measured with the straight edge and had .0015 of deflection at the very ends) and the machinists edge (in the yellow package) then we glued sandpaper down on the table and sanded the heads.

Anyways here is the head before and after sanding. Before it was actually 100% flat but I wanted to clean up those DEEP firing rings so that it would actually seal correctly this time around.

Then here's the final result.

You can VERY slightly see the compression marks still, but it isn't even felt with a feeler gauge.

Then I cleaned up the block (I was so unsatisfied with how this came out.) The final RA for the head was like 10 and I would estimate the block was at almost 40-45 RA. So if there is another head gasket leak I know which part its on...

I swear it took me like 4 tries to get the stupid time on this engine correct! (The guys at the shop were making fun of me for it and then one of the guys there whispered to the guys that were making fun of me."Dud he's only 17" and they all shut up :lol: Hey I still got it all together by myself didn't I?)

Finally I torqued everything back up, stuck the intake on and ran the rest of the wiring harness.

The rest I don't have pictures of, but the engine got back into the car and it started first try... Kinda, #1 I am an idiot and STARTED IT WITH NO OIL trust me I felt like an idiot. I ran it for about 2 seconds and shut it off so quickly. I didn't see the oil light go out and about shat a brick. Thank god for the gear lube I used to lubricate the engine when I was putting it together.

#2 It was misfiring REALLY bad, turns out its because I unplugged Injector 4 for some reason.

#3 It got really hot when I initially started it because I didn't open the bleeder on the radiator and I thought the head gaskets didn't seal haha!

But she is finally back together and running happily.

Damn, nice work on all of that! I wish I was able to work on a car at that age, I'm 21 so not that much older, but I had a lot of wasted time back in high school.
The car looks really clean and seems like you're putting in some pretty thorough and quality work on it.

The first time I had to pull the fenders off I found a ton of mud and stuff in that same pocket of the fender so I try to clean it every couple of months now to prevent any rust, luckily I haven't had any issues with it so far.

And that ride height with the coilovers seems pretty close to what mine is at, I think on stock wheels/tires the only rubbing I had was rubbing on the fender liner and a little bit of contact with the inner wheel well when turning at full lock, but obviously no need to roll the fenders. The fender liner basically sat on the tire though, so I just let them eat a hole through the fender liner and then relocated the wiring harnesses on both sides of the car.

This weekend I was on the way to work when disaster struck........

I going about 25 MPH (Thank god) and my steering wheel shock, seconds later my car lurched right and I got out to inspect the cause. Found that my wheel was only held in by the strut and the steering tie rod.



The threads on my lower ball joint stripped along with the cotter pin getting sheared off! How on earth did I mess this up so immensely???



Either way, I got it home. Had my dad bring me a floor jack, pulled the axle out on the side of the road. (I put an axle stub in so that I wouldn't mangle the wheel bearing) put the ball joint and a spare castle nut on the stripped threads so that I could limp her home. (that was alot of fun to do on the side of the road...



I drove it home on 3 axles!!! (Yeah the diff was dry... but I only went 1/2 of a mile)



Put it in 2 as to divert the power to 50/50ish split. And drove home. Went an bought a new axle at autozone, ball joint and a few other things at the dealership.

Don't mind the lack of a floor jack... I swear I have a death wish...

Getting these freaking things out is a pain in the butt!!!

first the bolt that holds it in tried to break on me so I had to use the oxy torch on it, then let PB blaster sit in it for awhile. An air hammer, pickle fork and alot of abuse later, I finally got it out!

next job was sticking the Axle stub back in the tranny. That was easy since I literally did that a month ago when I replaced the seal on that side so that slide right in. Now... the CV joint, that was a different story. I fussed with that stupid pin for half an hour because I didn't realize that the CV joints are offset so the pin only goes in one way... I guess the 5+ other times I've done axles I got lucky and coincidentally put the joint on the right way and the pin slide right in... ugh. Put the new ball joint in with lots of anti-seize and then put the new axle the rest of the way in. (I also stuffed a bunch of grease in the bearing area in hopes that it might find its way to the bearing to keep it happy.

The rest of the story went smoothly, and Darlene is once again driving happily. (Still lots of inner tie rod slop but thats fine till next year) lets hope I actually put it together correctly this time...



I did 37 FT-Lbs on the ball joint holder bolt and 32 FT-Lbs +Whatever it took to get it lined up on the castle nut. Stuck a new cotter pin in and called it a day...

Glad to hear that you're okay and in good spirits after that scare! Suspension and brakes are a couple of those areas where extreme care has to be taken because of what happens when they fail. When it comes time for you to look into lowering your car again I hope this drives you to look into some more reliable options than Raceland. Not saying that poor quality choices led to this, only that incidents can give you added perspective.

Anyway, I really like your car! I don't think I could give up my postal anytime soon, but if I did, it would be for a '98-'99 Outback Limited with the dual sunroofs!

From reading it I think he took the Racelands back off before the accident. I could be wrong though!

Anyways-- At least you're back on the road now!! I recently had a similar incident but my issue was with my lug nuts. I tightened them after doing work and they were fine for a month before working there way lose. Things happen and you learn for the next time!

Thanks Michelle! And yeah, I put the stock suspension back on thank god. I think when the time comes that I go lower I will buy some WRX struts and lowering springs. Either that or I will go some mid range coilovers. I think we might lower it next year because I will be needing tires and I want a different style wheel, something like 17" I really like the Drag DR31 bronze/Work emotion Kai. And as you guys know, Aftermarket wheels at stock height are ehhhhhh...

These wheels will be passed onto the Camry.



Over the weekend I fixed my climate control and PRN321 Lights. I installed some white LED's. They hotspot pretty bad but are MUCH nicer. Also got a LL.Bean Steering wheel to put in. I'll need to get a WRX airbag next to make it a MOMO Combo wheel.

Good thing you weren't going faster when it happened though, could've been a much worse accident for both you and the car.

Did you find out what was the cause? Did the taper end come out of the control arm or did the ball end work loose from the hub?

The tapered end came out from the control arm, I think I probably messed up the threads or put a weak cotter pin in when I was bringing my suspension back to stock. And in doing so I guess my neglect led up to it popping out... As for the anti-seize I just put it in the hub portion, not the tapered section.

I went and installed that LL. Bean steering wheel. The install was pretty straightforward, just had to swap a few things around and blam. I like how it turned out, I wish it was a deeper color to match the other wood grain, but still satisfied. Next I think I'm going to install one of those tinted license plate covers.

Guess what I did over the weekend! Kaboom!

Well, alittle less so than that, but I still dicked the engine. I put a momentary switch in line with the ignition coil so that I could cut ignition and spit flames, well it honestly worked really well minus my cats. But doing it on an engine that had iffy bearings in the first place? Not a good idea. I guess it shook it up enough to spin one of the bearings, so now shes knocking. I drove her home about 7 miles and parked it. I'm pulling the engine on my parts car this weekend and will take all of my parts and slap them on that motor and we'll see how that goes.

For now I am driving the red Outback, Ruth. But while my engine is out I will hollow my cats so I don't have to worry about then getting hot under my car when I want to be a ricer. Stay tuned. There will be lots of pictures!

She's back! Motor is happy! Hard to believe this motor has nearly 460k miles on it! I almost don't believe it!!!

told you guys the timing pulleys were sketchy, here is what was left from one of them!

but then I got it apart and look at these insides! Golden valve train and clean cylinder walls!

After redoing everything I could, I put new headgaskets on, new RTV on that plate in the back that leaks, transferred ALL of the parts from my old motor which was, Timing pulleys, intake, Heads, plastics alternator, AC pump etc. my pulleys actually made a tiny bit of noise, so I soaked them in 15-40w oil and now they stop quickly, feel tight and are quiet! Incredible what adequate lubrication can do!

The shim that sits ontop of the bucket came out! Incredible! It destroyed the cam too haha, I took those parts out of the parts motor, so all is well :)

Motor fired right up but overheated, Our coolant systems don't bleed as easily as the later ones to say the least! I thought the Head gaskets didn't seal! It runs way better than before! Super smooth, NO KNOCK! THANK GOD. my old engine had really annoying rod knock since I had bought it haha. We will see how this motor holds up! I hope it all seals, I re-used most of the seals because I had just replaced them when I did head gaskets, so I was not inclined to buy more from subaru. Next I gotta punch out my cats! but I won't do that until all vitals are perfect.

Finally got my latest roll of film developed! Had some really great shots, but as this is a Subaru forum I will keep it to Subaru's. This is back from January when there was still snow on the ground. As for the car, it has been solid. No problems have arose as of yet. Need to get the Toyota running and then Darlene will be going down from the Manual trans swap! Then my EJ205 will be pulled apart!

Nice work.

It does suck but this motor is running much much better, no knock period! Less fuel economy but much better! I really dig your build too! Love your color scheme ;)

In the past couple weeks my brake lines in the rear have blown, my dad jacked up my car via the core support and now the hood sits stupid, and I got fresh wheels and tires!

You can see the awful hood gap where the support is bent... I got 2004 STI struts and springs to put on! The tires make it feel better I can't wait to install my struts! Next will be removing my subframe spacers and other outback bits. When the engine gets pulled I am going to be cutting the shaft on the steering column so that it will all fit correctly.

It has been a minute since I posted on here. In that time several things have changed. I now have BC coilovers, full 3" Exhaust from the headers back to a varex style muffler. Tribeca front calipers (Same as LGT if anyone was wondering) and 2013 outback limited rotors (Same as LGT also). Bug deflector on the hood. JDM tail lights and a soon to be 5SPD manual transmission. First some junk iphone pics.
