Hi everyone! Figured it was time to make a build thread on my outback :read2: Currently in the middle of the swap hoping to have it on the road in about a week. Its actually going to be my fiance's car until she gets the car shes after then i'll get to drive it all the time.

This is actually my second outback, but nothing ever happened with that one because of my WRX:toothy10: So it went away.

What was the WRX in question? This crazy science project if you will. RWD converted running a toyota W58 Trans, nissan r180 rear diff, nissan brakes blah blah blah lol.

Fast forward a few years from the old outback to about a month ago. Got a call from a friend that he was gonna send his outback to the junkyard with a blown hg. Told him to give me a week to get the money and boom. In my Driveway. :happy2: 98 outback 230k miles on it but manual.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/04/IMG_20160318_163704_zps6pwlctgv-1.jpg (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/Justin_Sloman/media/IMG_20160318_163704_zps6pwlctgv.jpg.html)

Long story short, due to a couple good/bad friends  and realizing with it wouldnt be much more than putting a rebuilt stock motor in, we eventually decided to use my wrx as the donor car and to go ahead with a full wrx swap on the outback. It would get all the goodies on my car but keep the outback driveline to stay awd.

So thats where it is today. Most of my pics are on instagram (@j.sloman ) so im just gonna put a few in progress ones up now and I'll try to keep this thread updated as I finish the car.

alittle update.

This past weekend I made it a goal to get it started up at the least.Well after some weird grounding issues and having to drop the tank again because it wouldnt vent, it runs!! Still needs some little things but it should be driveable by the weekend.

Since converting to RWD is something I fantasize about very frequently I'd love to hear about what changes it made good or bad to the overall driving experience. My ultimate dream would be an EG33/RWD swap for my car.

I've been slacking on keeping this thread up dated but the car has been done for a couple months now. Its running great! Just needs a few things buttoned up and it will be good to go. Paint and body work would be nice but who knows if we'll make that work.

We took it out this weekend to S3 so heres a couple pics from the show and the prep.

Parked next to my buddy's obs that we wrx swapped last year.

Since converting to RWD is something I fantasize about very frequently I'd love to hear about what changes it made good or bad to the overall driving experience. My ultimate dream would be an EG33/RWD swap for my car.

I should prolly answer this finally :happy3:

When I went rwd it was purely to build something to drift with, so i dont really have a good comparison for "driving experience". Overnight it went from a reguler awd wrx to a rwd wrx with a welded diff. It drove completely different, but all the things you would expect were there. The car didnt pull as hard down low put also didnt fall off as much up high in the rpm ranges either. It was a different experience driving it. I never drove it rwd without a welded diff, but it was alot of fun in the corners even when not trying to slide everywhere. One random thing is that since the subarus run such little caster from the factory, when you take away power to the front wheels, you have to work alittle harder to return the wheel to center. Not a big deal but something I notcied right off the bat.

EG33/RWD would be awesome, I know someone whos doing that right now in an impreza and it looks like its gonna be alot of fun. Going rwd made the car alot of fun, but it was also alot of work. You will break things, theres no way around that unless you spend big bucks. Someone once said "if you want a reliable rwd subaru, replace anything that says subaru". He was pretty spot on there.
In the 3 years my car was RWD I broke 6 sets of transfer gears,3 diffs, 1 whole trans and no less than 10 axles. Once I swapped to a nissan r180 I stopped breaking diffs and just axles. I swapped in a w58 from a non turbo supra and stopped breaking transmissions. I eventually wanted to go r200 with 350z axles. That setup is pretty stout for any car but it just never happened.
If I were to try it again (i plan too one day) I would go either sti trans or something actually rwd off the bat and swap in the r200 right way. That way the drivetrain is reliable and all you have to worry about is the motor and normal "drift" setup stuff.

Hopefully that helps alittle haha, feel free to ask any rwd questions you have. I'll do my best to answer them, hopefully alot faster next time :)

The car looks good! All of my friends have been trying to get me to rwd convert my car and I definitely would but I keep worrying about breaking stuff.
I figured since I only have a stock EJ25D I'll have enough power to break stuff, but if I don't launch aggressively then it shouldn't blow up as quickly. Also I'm thinking since it's a pretty long wheelbase car I won't have to abuse it as much with clutch kicks since you can throw the weight around a little more easily. Of course that's all just speculation, let me know if I'm on the mark or missing something.

I'm also trying to talk to Logan Noel from Drift Union, he's got the purple 1st gen legacy, I'm sure you know about him. I think he runs an r200 now but not entirely sure.

Logan is the only person I know that has not broken a 5 spd trans. I dont know how he does it but everytime I broke one thats all he would tell me haha. I never really broke something from clutch kicking. It was all at random times. I broke a set once when I transfered from wet to dry pavement once the tires gained traction. I broke an axle pulling into my driveway once :smt022

My only real advise if your gonna keep a stock 5 spd is to leave the front diff in. I took mine out and I think it caused issues that made me break so many transfer gears. I wasnt beating on my car as hard as some others have and I was breaking transfer gears faster than them. My first set of transfer gears broke 2 days after swapping so just be ready to break something.

Hmm, I don't know if that makes me more or less confident haha. What was weak in the diff? I've read somewhere that the r160s only have 2 spider gears but a lot of aftermarket LSDs run 4 spider gears so they're a bit stronger. I've been debating going r160 with an LSD, or r180, I think r200 is probably too far out of question for me right now.

And I figured maybe if the r160 isn't really the weakest point, maybe stay r160 and get custom axles made? It's probably better if I didn't try to skimp on it though since it's just gonna get more expensive if I do. How much power are you putting down? I feel like the r160 will hold up with my stock power/torque levels but I'm definitely worried about the axles.

Is the r180 a direct swap in? Maybe I can slowly just swap in an r180 and run that open for a while until I can get custom axles made or something. What are you running axle wise to convert the r180 to the hubs? Are you running the stock 5x100 hubs or did you convert to 5x114.3 rears?

Also, just curious cause I don't think I'll go that far, but did you get a bell housing adapter for the w58?

slamdspec
06-27-2016, 05:58 PM
One r160 broke the pinion, two r160's broke teeth off the ring and pinion. I would atleast go r180, lsd or not its a stronger diff. The nissan r180 is a direct bolt on and can use the stock subaru r160 with minor mods. It is harder to find an lsd for the nissan r180 but not impossible. People have managed to break r160 dss axles and at the cost of a set of those, your not too far off from what it takes to just go r200.

I found someone making bellhousing adapters to run the w58 with an ej motor, its for sale :smt112

Your car kinda makes me want 18's

i wanted 17s but my girl wanted to stay with nt03's so it ended up with 18's. Its weird because the car pretty much tucks tire all around and rubs on all the inner wheelwells, but it still looks super high. My jack even still fits under it without driving on blocks. The 235/40's arent helping but sometimes I think 17's would have been the better route. Its her car and shes happy so i dont worry about it too much anymore lol

Theres alot of oem parts listed because I tried to put everything down to help with others doing the full swap like we did.Lemme know if you have any swap questions, im always happy to help. If your in socal, im always down to turn wrenches too :headbang:

Small update. Took the outback on a pretty big road trip last month. Went from SD up to Trinity Lake area then camped our way home down the 1. Pretty epic drive over 2100 miles and for the most part the wagon loved every second of it.

*instagram pic
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/14068442_10202071993237042_7405529741598523092_o.jpg

Anyway, the only issue we had was with cooling. On any long hill with a decent grade, the car would start to heat up. I think the highest it got was about 3/4 of the way up the gauge but as soon as we hit the top of the hill it would cool off and be fine. Havent had any issues since we got back to SD but theres nothing really here to replicate what we saw on the road trip. Anybody else with a swapped car have issues like this? IT just seems like the car cant rid of the heat fast enough going up hill under load so I was thinking about getting one of those turbo blankets and maybe a heat sheild to see if it helps any. Id like to go to a better radiator also so somebody suggest something :D
