Cobb proves SPT intake 99.8% ineffective

If you observe the two green lines in the below dyno graph you will see that the difference in vacuum between the stock airbox (solid green line) and the SPT intake system (dashed green line) is statistically insignificant, less than .02% difference on average. In other words the stock intake system creates no more vacuum in the turbo inlet pipe than the SPT intake system which demonstrates the stock intake system is not a restriction at this point. If the stock intake were a restriction then the solid green line would descend at a greater angle downwards.

Out of all the intakes I'v seen, Legacy's stock intake seems to be the closest to the grill for colder air. I don't see a reason to get an aftermarket one.

That's the 05 Turbo. Our cars still benefit from an intake more than they do.

Restrictions inherent to the intake make it worth it to get a well designed/engineered intake upgrade. There are a lot of pressure differences along the intake (the snorkus and the airbox being the biggest) that cause the air to flow more poorly.

I designed a Ram-air intake using my foglight hole, and it worked quite well. Mileage took a big jump.

So wait, this is for the GT only, right? So the results would be a lot more than my stock intake on my '03 Legacy 2.5L engine? This was on my shopping list but I'm not so sure now...

Really? I got the impression it was a really good intake, but then again, I'm a n00b. :lol: Anyway, I read a bunch of reviews and they were all very positive. Care to provide a recommendation? :)

The SPT intake is for turbo cars only (the LGT and the WRX/STi).

The WRX/STi intake looks a LOT different than the LGT intake.

The WRX intake looks like the inside of the airbox, but with a cone filter on the end instead of a panel filter. The SPT part basically replaces the accordian piece between the filter and the turbo inlet hose. It also puts the filter in a more direct airpath.

There is a slight difference in feel when comparing stock to the SPT intake. The SPT intake definately makes the intake sound a lot better.

I was also looking at a Weapon R Dragon air intake. Are those much better?

I have a 2.5 N/A with BORLA headers, RandomTech cat and Stromung cat-back. I wanted a new intake so that the entire system would be able to support higher flow (if I didn't the intake would be the weak point in the system and everything else that I did with the exhaust wouldn't be benefitting to potential). I've seen people say the SPT is good for turboed and bad for N/A so I stayed away from that. I ended up getting the weapon R intake. I got a noticable performance ugprade along with a much better sounding intake. The only problem with it is even though it is advertised for the Legacy makes and will fit into them properly, they don't have the proper number of valves for hoses. You need to know which ones to hook up and which ones to just plug and leave dangling in the engine bay.

Overall I would recommend the Weapon-R though. I usually don't like parts labeled R but this is the one thing in my car that I figured I just had to go with. It is definately worth the money for the upgrade (pretty cheap for the overall performance upgrade it provided).

Hmm, thanks for the great review of the product, I will definitely look into it more. If anyone else has experiences with this, I'd appreciate the feedback as always.

i'm gonna get rid of my ebay intake to fab up my own. i'm not satisfied with the match to the airbox.

my friend john just got a welder for free, it's not heavy duty, but it'll work fine.

i'm gonna make a stainless intake and then... attempt the almighty gravelsports intake.
