Which version STi?

It should bolt up, but you need to rotate the flange for the hangers to work right. Rear hanger usually needs an extension.

It's a tight fit. The STi can is pretty big and the BD recessed opening is tight. Mine hangs down a little due to the 3" tubing so you could probably get it sucked up another 1/2" with 2.5" pipe...

The longer wagon bumpers mean you have to do some other mods, and OB's are even longer.

Sorry I don't have a better low shot, but my muffler is tucked up as much as possible, out of the way, with almost a foot-long extension off the muffler to get the tip sitting perfectly in the bumper cutout.

Anyone putting an exhaust on a car with a painted bumper would do well to pick up some Kartboy hangers; they'll keep it from shifting and tweaking near enough to the bodywork to bubble the paint.

No, it'll actually take more work. Search in the engine forums for the recent thread about it.

It's not that much shorter - 4-5" at most. All it would take would be cutting a length of pipe, welding on some flanges and then you have the ability to run any WRX/STi axleback you want - providing it's a bolt up for a WRX/STi.

I just replaced my old apexi n1 with a stock sti axleback, had to have a local shop do it because I don't have a welder at the moment.

Anyway, they got it to tuck up nice and tight to the hole in the bumper (I'll try and grab a pic when the weather is a little better) but to do so they modified the hangers and tilted it on a slight (maybe 5 degree) angle.

I got my WRX catback for $50. Its a 2 3/8" mandrel bent exhaust that requires about a 5-6" extension and the midpipe hanger extended. If the local exhausts shops weren't out to get me for an arm and a leg, it'd be done now. I am thinking about cutting and extending it myself with clamps, then driving to the exhaust shop for them to button up the joints with welds. Still, its looking like this is the ultimate cheap catback solution, considering my last OBX based catback was $200 all said and done.

What's the sound like on that? I have a 2.5" all the way back, with a Corazon muffler I picked up from JHOT, and even with the cat and a resonator, its LOUD.

I'm looking to unload my muffler in hopes of a quieter solution.

It's not super loud. A bit of drone in the cabin, but I have a wagon and the tip isn't all the way out from under the bumper.

Outside the car, it's louder than stock, and much much deeper, but not enough to make the neighbors upset.

I have an STI canister from a friend. What would I need to complete the system? Should i just run new piping or should I look around for an STI setup?

You would be best off having a local shop custom bending you piping to fit your car's factory hanger locations & the fact that you shouldn't run any larger than 2.25" pipe unless you have big time engine upgrades installed.

The mid pipe is shorter and so is the factory muffler inlet pipe. Legacy models are longer than the Impreza/WRX models.

Pretty much the exhaust length on the WRX & STi models have stayed very close to the same length over the last 5 yrs. So anyone of those would need to be extended to fit a Legacy model.

i just installed a STi muffler this winter on my BD and i freaking love it. it's not loud loud, but a tad louder than stock and super deep.....

i replaced everything from the header back, so i removed all the stock cats in favor of a single high flow cat from magnaflow. for the midpipe, i just had the exhaust shop custom bend/weld 2.25" piping in there. and yes, they had to reweld the pieces on the muffler to match my hangers on my BD.

initially, i didn't have them install a resonator, but this is definitely something you'll want. pulling off the accelerator at high rpms caused a horrible farting/buzzing/backfire-ish noise. not cool at all. i got a nice, big resonator installed afterwards that cured this and balanced out the nsound a bit. totally worth it.

i noticed a bit of a change, but i bet if i'd replaced the headers too it would a lot more impact. new headers come this week, though....local shop who did my exhaust makes custom headers for suby's.....$140 installed, i figure it's worth a shot. plus, a couple of the local suby guys have them on their RS's and rave about em.

anyway, STi muffler def recommended!

Yep, a resonator is definitely worth it. I used the STi midpipe mostly for the resonator, and don't regret it.
