Hey Ma, that's a great upgrade from your stock shifter mount bushings. I'm thinking about installing the same part. My legacy is a '96 though so I'll have to look around for that part. At times my gearbox is pretty "sticky." I don't know if this bushing would fix that problem.

What kind of improvements have you noticed since the install?

The bushings along with the billet-like shifter take the slop out of the gate. I also have the STi 5MT hardened mounts as well, so that also helps big time.

The gate is more defined, and the throws feel more direct, not so cushioned as they were out of the factory.

honestly....should have been this way out of the gate.

Sticky? Describe when its 'sticky'.

gator, you answered my vague question right on. I was just using non technical terms to describe that my throws were very cushioned.

So for parts you would recommend the following?

•Gearbox Bushings
•Billet shifter, &
•Hardened Mounts

Any suggestions on which supplier to go to for a '96 gearbox?

Thanks

jasonbasu - I hope by 'gearbox bushings' you mean the Kartboy shifter bushings....if so, then:

1) yes
2) yes
3) yes

Unfortnately, I have no idea where to get the gearbox. My first thought before seeing that you were from Montana, was Super-Rupair...out in Colorado. That might be your best bet considering you ARE in Montana, being relatively close to CO.....closer than I am. :-D

What condition gearbox you looking for? new, rebuilt?

Hey Gator, I'll probably stick with my current gearbox for now and look for Kartboy shifter bushings for a '96. Hopefully that'll cure my need for a rebuilt gearbox. I'll post up after the install. Thanks.

Just go straight and by them from Kartboy, great guys, a little pricey but I wouldn't mind helping that company out. If you want to go all out, you could get the STI shifter assembly with shortened shifter and STI upgraded bushings, which comes with a whole new linkage IIRC, but thats 289 bucks or something around that ballpark. The Kartboy items (shifter and bushings) as a set from Kartboy cost $160 (last I checked) and do pretty much the same thing. Only thing to consider is taht the Kartboy short shifter is 40% shorter than stock, the STI one is right around there, yet kartboy makes a short throw version thats around 30% shorter than the STI short shifter kit....thats quite a reduction in throw, with a new crisp linkage to boot. Thats one thing I'm going to have to address sooner than later...I have a lot of freeplay and slop which needs fixing. One other thing to consider is changing your gear oil...can turn a pretty awful gear box with hard shifts into a seemingly brand new one...or at least exponentially better than it was. Try changing your tranny oil with Redline Shockproof, I just put it in my transmission and the stuff is amazing. Go with the Light weight to keep it around stock numbers, it will be a little lighter than stock when cold which will give you easier shifts on cold starts, and more protection when things start to heat up. I have the heavy weight in right now which is a little much, acts up to a 250W at high temps, which doing as much highway driving as I do isn't to great with my gas mileage, so I'll be switching to light soon enough. In the winter though heavy would be perfect, has the lower friction of the stock 75W90 oil, but not so much in the warmer temps.

Hey guys, go check out Kartboy's site again....they just came out with a new bushing for the REAR of the shifter assembly. $35 plus $3 for shipping. Takes up the last of the slack and mushiness of the shifter.

I'm ordering the 6MT and the rear bushings today....it'll be easier to install them with the shifter assembly out. :-D

Plenty of rave reviews on that new rear bushing though. Easy to install too, that is if you don't mind being under the car.

Thought I'd give you guys a heads up!

Have fun finding gearbox bushings....I waited three months for one of those, because third gear was almost unthreadable....  Hope you have better luck.
