So I decided to buy those gauge overlays on Ebay.

I really like them, although they're a bit bright at night. I wish I could turn off that center part where it glows bright light blue. The dark blue numbers rock. I also wish my needles were lit up, but these guages do a good job of compensating for that.

Maybe I should put tint film on the plastic cover to compensate for brightness?

How hard was it for you to wire up?

Wiscon_Mark
08-23-2006, 11:31 AM
Not hard at all. It came with a relay and everything.

Did you get the one that allows color-changing?

How hard was it to do the overlay on the needle?

OT: Did you ever get that rust fixed?

1. No, I haven't seen those in ages.

2. Not hard at all, there's quite a lot of room to slide them in from the side.

OT3: No, the bondo fiberglass repair kit I bought exploded on me...I haven't bothered since

So... Do you lose use of the stock rheostat to control the brightness?

Wiscon_Mark
08-23-2006, 09:25 PM
pretty much. Except that I can still use it for all of the other interior lights.

So... Do you lose use of the stock rheostat to control the brightness? Lighting=dimmer, that is all. BTW blue is bad for my eyes.

Wiscon_Mark
08-24-2006, 07:26 PM
Lighting =/= dimmer in this case. The overlays have their own lights

That is all.

BTW this blue is much less intense than the red I used before, or the stock green, even if blue is supposed to be worse for your nightvision.

that so bling! you ain't neva gonna see dat!

with the exception of the needles, it actually looks good.

I would say tint the outside plastic...but without backlit needles...might be hard to see them. :-?

I'm definitely musing ideas at making them light up. I may end up needle swapping. BAC5.2 is going to, and I want to see how he does it.

ZOMG... I just found this and I have to say WTF is up with that?! The rice hater went and bought APC guages for his car.. damn..

BTW, I would take the guages back out and try and tint just the center piece somehow so you don't take away from being able to see the rest of the guages as well as you can now.

They're not APC...if they were, they'd say "APC" all over them ;) I know they're kinda rice, but they do look a helluva lot nicer than the crappy stock guages.

I've found that I've gotten used to the brightness and have no issues with night vision anymore...the new headlights might've helped a tad too ;)

As for the tinting over the center only...I think that would look awful

Hey..... where is that thing anyway? am I supposed to have a dimmer on my interior lights? We were rooting around in the dash while installing the Hellas on saturday, and now I can't see my gauges at night.

it's probably in some obvious place, I know....

THANK YOU!

that was it... god it's cold out there.

you should have seen what I had to do on the rally the other night, when we left the drivers' meeting and realized I couldn't see my odometer or speedometer... both kind of important

but to stay on topic... those gauges look nice during the day, but I couldn't deal with all the colors at night.

Weird little quirk to this that I thought I should mention...whenever I use my rear wiper, they turn on. Without fail, they turn on.

I honestly can't imagine why they would, I didn't wire anything in with the wipers for god sakes (just used power from the cig lighter). If I turn the rear wiper off, no they don't turn off.

It's just really strange...I can't for the life of me figure out why that would happen. I was thinking maybe a power surge just trips them or something, but the front wipers don't do that and they take a heck of a lot more power.

I wonder if you added some type of glow in the dark clear paint, or something like that to the guages, if the blue light would make it react and light up the tach needle? Just a thought...

mark.. also, what year did the listing say the guages were for? I see some, but they say 93-96 only? Wtf.. i didnt even think those years had the same tach? Let me know.. im looking at buying some.. especially for the cheap price of .50 buy it now! How much did you pay for yours with shipping?

Also.. if you figure out how to get it working with the stock light adjustment on the car.. please post a DIY.. but yea, you should make a DIY anyways.. because we want one!

well i do...

edit : also, i noticed you dont have the door open signal thing.. does that work with these guages? I really like the feature that tells me if the doors are open.. thanks.

Wiscon_Mark
01-09-2007, 10:27 AM
I actually do have the door open thing, it's in the upper display, and lights up only when the doors are open. It's just one light, and doesn't tell me which door, like the later models did.

This would't work for you, because you have a 120mph speedo, and mine is 140 (that means my car goes faster....).

I dunno about 1993 though....95-96, yes. I guess it depends on the seller, but they're overall pretty cheap no matter who you go through. Shipping will always be a ripoff. They show up in a small bubble wrap envelope...probably costs 60 cents to ship, but they usually charge 7 bucks or whatever for the listing.

So it wouldnt work on a 99 LGT? Wtf.. wait.. i thought ur guage on the 97 was the same as mine? Now im just confused..

and that is kinda weird how your speed goes up to 140.. wonder why they changed it from 140 to 120. LOL

For anyone else, beware that only some of the Speedo's went to 140MPH, the GT's especially only went to 120MPH. Big difference when applying overlays

The 4EAT's cut is 112? I think the 5 speeds have a cut at 135, right?

I've gotten my BK above 115 already. o.o

We went over this many times. 4EAT cut isnt 112 (at least the 2.5 isnt. And would a tranny determine when the fuel is cut from the engine??

This is what I got today, they won't work with the 93 gauges. The speedo and tech is recessed in the trim, yet the fuel and temp is part of that piece. I know of a one piece, but it's around $55. When it comes time to get gauges to match everything up I decided weather to get them or not.

Question. Has anyone had problems with their guages after using these overlays? Has anyone problems with their guages without these? And I'm not talking about the intermittent '99 speedo failures.

More often than not my temp guage reads really low. Its almost like its stuck. My tachometer will run okay for about ten minutes and then it will stop reading engine speeds under 2500 RPM. So Im wondering if perhaps the motors that control these needles perhaps have worn out due to friction with the overlays. Just a thought.

Thoughts anyone?

Reason
01-06-2009, 04:09 PM
The needles sit high already. I'm pretty sure they clear the overlays.

SLegacy99

That they do. But the overlays also wrinkle and thus are higher.
