does anyone know what kind of power you can get out of the 2.2? i was hoping to get from 175 to 200 sounds like a long shot but may be possible without boosting (i hope). brand names and what not if there is a such power gain. i will go as far as full upgrade not just intake and exhaust.
thanks
will.

I can't imagine 175 is out of the question. I don't see how .3 of a liter would create a big difference in mods for the engines. Besides the cam work, exhaust, etc... I've started looking at e85 mixtures. Apparently its good for boosting power for minimal fuel modifications.

Up the CR and get the thinest gaskets you can put on it and you should be close to that.

You'd want to run 89 octane and get a wideband O2 plus air/fuel controller.

i do always run 89. ive read it will help an older car last longer.

You read bad advice. Higher octane than necessary is never necessary, and it's actually detrimental.

yea i read premium is bad unless its called for but it said the 89 wasnt. i dont remember where i read that now though. you think im hurting the car though? it doesnt seem to be in any pain infact seems to run almost better but that could be in my head. also i think really beefing up the legacy may be a bad idea becuase i just found out not to long ago that my odometer was turned back at the dealership, so the real miles on my car are unknown. i might be better off to save and buy another BD in the future(i love BDs).

It's placebo.

Yes, 89 isn't really considered "premium" but you don't need to be running it regardless.

And to be honest, 89 really isn't 89. It's just the overflow tank for both the 87 and the 91/93. So it's somewhere in between the two. Anyways, run 87 unless you go high compression or turbo. Any more is just a waste of money (and actually will net worse mileage & performance).

and there was silly old me, thinking that a decade's worth of carbon buildup on the pistons would net a higher-than-stock compression ratio that would necessitate higher octane. Yeah, you can run crap octane, and the ecu will pull timing to make the car run right, but its not really ideal. I get another ~30 miles out of a tank of gas running 91.

my old 320i would ping if i ran the 91 specified by bmw.

And if you ran seafoam, you'd get rid of all that carbon. Counting on engine deposits to make your CR higher to buy higher octane sounds rather like guesswork to me.

haha whatever.

More clarification please. So upping the compression ratio would net more power, but the thinner gaskets? That is simply to prevent gasket failure correct? Or is there another reason?

I run 87, but I'm at altitude so that is mid grade.

No, the thinner gaskets would also up the CR to help performance.

so just upping the CR would get me to that alone? or would other mods contribute to that?

You are looking for about the power levels of a stock 2.0 WRX motor. Swapping one in may be the cheaper method, plus I think it would be more reliable.

Going the N/A route it cool, but it is long and difficult, many people don't make it.

thin head gaskets increase CR. Of course, since a 2 point CR bump nets ~15 hp, im not sure how that alone is going to make 200hp.

it's not. You'd need cams, intake, exhaust, upgraded TB, and some other supporting mods. That would greatly increase the effectiveness of upping the CR.
