does the 5 in BD5/BG5 stand for version 5 or something?

Everytime I have heard of a car mentioned as a BD5/BG5 it has always been the twin turbo... But I guess that doesn't mean much of anything.

This is the chassis designation used to identify the models as Japanese and European model years are not the same as USDM. For instance in the case of the BD5 and BG5 it signifies the 96-99 style, in JDM it is from 94-99 as I recall. It is a better way to buy parts by specifying the chassis designation since it disregards model year confusion.

No, I believe it designates engine.

For instance:

GC2=Impreza 1.8
GC4=Impreza 2.2
GC6=Impreza 2.5
GC8=Impreza 2.0 Turbo

I have a BK6

I'm guessing the BD5/BG5 means a 2.0 engine.
Somebody check out their GT, it should be right in the VIN.

Here are a couple links that may (or not) help

http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/forum/sho ... ssis+codes (http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10711&highlight=chassis+codes)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Leg ... e_schedule (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Legacy#World_market_release_schedule)

VIN # on both my GT and L wagons shows as BK6 which discounts the one link that says the OB wagon is a BG and the wagon is a BK (Mark's should be different from mine according to the first link) My GT is the 2.5 and the L is a 2.2 which further skews things. I guess there is something that isn't being shown here.

Mark is correct, the 5th digit designates engine.

Just like we never got a GC8 in the US (no matter what the Nabisco asshtas tell you), we never got a BD5/BG5.

Not 100% sure what the 5 designates though.

I think the 5 is 2.0L Turbo. or Twin Turbo. I dunno, we'd have to have someone from Japan do some investigating. Because most of the BGs (ie: GT-B) are turbos.

And the reason that my outback is different, is because it's actually a Legacy L Wagon with extras, not a raised roof chassis.

I saw on another link somewhere (can't find it now) that the 6 engine code as in Marks and my BK6 can mean either the 2.2 or the 2.5. Did they make the raised roof OB in 95 Mark - you said yours is an L with extras - is it badged as an OB? That does make sense why your OB, my GT and my L all have the same designation particularly if the 6 can mean either engine. A little confusing though.

No, mine is not raised roof. Hence the BK designation. I don't think they'd make the 6 both 2.2L and 2.5, that really doesn't make any sense to me. But I could be wrong...
