OK well, It's been a little bit since I've done anything to my car, so this last week I got the bug and went to town. Did a little smoking, and got a new pipe..

Sorry for the bad pics...this is what 2 Megapixles gets ya...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2006/09/DSC00091-1.jpg

They look amazing in person ( I think) Very subtle unless you know it's not stock, and adds some nice contrast (they don't blend like the pictures make them look). Also, all colors show through so no safety is compromised. Sort of anti-JDM.

And the new OBX CAI FTW. OMGHI2U!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2006/09/DSC00093-1.jpg

Deffinetly a nice improvement in sound and throttle response. I did a few red line pulls and around 3500-4000 rpm the thing GETS UP AND GOES! I finally have some top-end and a little upmph for this lead-sled

Over all I'm happy, next on the list is a light weight crank pulley and maybe a throttle body spacer.

where did you get the CAI?

I assume the filter is in the fender... How hard is it to get at?

The tails are surely unique

MoclovFlop

Ebay for the intake, just search under Impreza and you'll find them. Yea the filter's in the fender but it's not to hard to get to, just have to remove the bottom splash guard.

I hope you mean unique in a good way

MoclovFlop
05-25-2007, 10:20 PM
Haha, yea bling it is....I'm thinkin of just going flat black for the tube...and I've always hated the colored couplings and hoses but but didn't have a choice. As you can tell by the dirtyness...I don't care about how my engine looks right now, if I ever get some things worth showing off, I'll take care of some stuff.

There are quite a few nice examples of BEs out there and someday I hope to have mine be considered one of them. But for now, I have to stick to DIY and cheap-o mods to keep the bug at bay.

A couple clean shots:

legacyB4RSK
05-19-2009, 07:35 PM
You'll be one of the few with a JDM rear bumper for the BE. Here's mine , the dealer reworked the bumper so that it would blend with the the USDM fender curve (JDM one is thinner). BTW how's the leveler switch working for you, is it the JDM one? Would you happen to have the wiring diagram?

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/01/037-1.jpg

MoclovFlop
05-19-2009, 11:40 PM
Yea, There's one near me for $150, but I'm not sure if it's worth it?

And what you say fender curve what do you mean? Are you referring to the "lip" on the fender?

The switch is nice, Helps just enough to not get flashed. It's not the JDM one, it's the US 06-07 STI one. It's the same one as the JDM Legacy, but slightly bigger so the dummy hole next to the cruise switch had to be dremmeled a bit.

So in terms of the wiring diagram, it's the same as the 06-07 STI one that you can get in a service manual or AllData, the only difference is that the headlight plug is triangular on our car versus straight on the STI. You will need the JDM diagram though to compare it to the STI one to get the pins right on the plug, but atfer searching, looks like you already have that.

go to page 5 about half way down and look at the right rear tire. than look at the were the bumper and body join. you will see the diff from the USDM and JDM bumpers. i think there is only 2 of us with a JDM BE5 rear bumper. its worth it. it makes the car look so much better. also if you look at my exhaust tip you can tell were the USDM bumper was and the diff in height that way. the only tiem i notice that there is a diff in the bumpers now is when im washing the car.

MoclovFlop
05-20-2009, 03:28 PM
Damn, I didn't realize it was than different... I'll have to weigh my options.

Also, in the shot with the JDM bumper, it looks like the bottom of the bumper is higher than the US one (compared to the exhaust), is that right? I thought the JDM one would go lower.

legacyB4RSK
05-20-2009, 04:35 PM
It's worth it. Here's a comparison between mine and stock USDM. Actually looks better with the JDM bumper as the exhaust looks out of place with the USDM bumper, never liked that look. With my turbo swap soon I have purchased a stock JDM b4 RSK catback so it will look completely stock considering the tail pipe is straight instead of bent downwards.

Reuben
05-21-2009, 03:34 AM
Yeah i can try find spats. Bumpers are a no-no though, i bet something like $1000 shipping or something utterly absurd. Shipping from NZ is a no no. Only way it would be viable is if i could load up a pallet with lots of shit, bumpers, lights, flush bump strips, garnishes, bilsteins, maybe even an engine etc. etc.

Also painted the lights and all of the trim (like the vinyl around the sun roof opening)

The plastics like the pillars and lights were done with Plasti dip, the trim was done with Dupli-Color Vinyl and fabric spray.

I also covered the sun visors with suede and did the oh-shit handles even though they are not shown. I'm not sure if I want to put the oh shit bars back in, I kind of like the shaved look. But the visors will be put back in next week.

MoclovFlop
05-31-2009, 06:37 PM
I did it my self actually. There are a lot of DIY write ups on it on NASIOC and rs25.

As a run down, you'll need about 4-5 yards of the fabric you want and 2 cans of 3M Super 90 spray adhesive (about $12.00 at Home Depot). You can pull the headliner out of the passenger door with a lot of patience and care.

No need to strip the old "fabric". You simply spray the head liner AND the fabric and do a few inches at a time and work your way from back to front. (follow the directions on the can for wait time also)

For the curves you'll need to take your time and massage the fabric into fitting the contours right

I did the trim in the Dupli-color vinyl and fabric spray and it works amazing on those pieces.

It's actually pretty simple if you take your time and pay attention to how the fabric will move/curve/stretch. It took me about 6-7 hours to do it over a 2 day period.

If you have a sun roof there are a few more steps.

film or spray?

MoclovFlop
05-31-2009, 09:33 PM
Tails were done with Testor's Translucent Black spray paint and a couple coats of clear. I didn't do clear the first time and it started chipping about 8 months after. So I did it a second time with clear and they have held up great.

Thank you. I'm pretty happy with it myself. It's clean and simple but a 100% upgrade from factory. I think it's close to where I want it to be, so I'm working on getting the exterior to that point (a lot harder and more expensive!)

I used finishing screws and just screwed them into the bumper and tire well (with silicone sealant). I still love the STI one since it's....functional. But this one looks good so it's OK.

This was free, otherwise I think the STI one would be cooler.

Do you have a write-up on the HID install or links to any others?

Also, what about the JDM light pattern? Is that a big deal? I see you painted the reflector to limit the issues...was it really an issue "stock"?

I have JDM projectors on my BK and they aren't really too big of an issue. Looking into some lights on my wife's BE.

Thanks for any help!

I'll PM you the info on how to wire them up.

in terms of the pattern, yes it kind of was a big deal. in order to not blind traffic, I had to lower them which sucked for me. So after doing the lens paint i was able to raise them back up and haven't been flashed once, where with the non modded lights, I was flashed literally every week.

Update again:

Got these today :smt007 :smt026

MoclovFlop
10-14-2009, 01:29 PM
Thanks, yep, I'll be getting some nice bits from DLC's car and JDM tails is one of them. I've been slacking pretty hard on the body work, so this winter the JDM bumper and spats will be painted and put on, along with the tails. So the rear end will be done once all that goes on.

Auto dimming was not an option for 2000, so it was not plug and play for my car. But yes, if you have a 2001+ it'll plug right in for you.

The Auto-Dimming mirror w/ compass (H501SSA101) was plug-n-play for my wagon (MY00 / BH / GT). Harness plug was located under the headliner near the overhead map light.

The Auto-Dimming mirror w/ compass AND Homelink (H501SAG100) was also plug-n-play but required me to order the windshield mounting adapter (H501SSA040).

Works great...

MoclovFlop
10-19-2009, 11:26 PM
Well, my car is an early build (sept 99) so I hink that might have somethin to do with it. I definitely don't have a plug ( and yes I looked when my headliner was out). I ended up have to tap my vanity mirror lights for a switched power.

Interesting

Update:

Put on a few of DLCs old parts. Just the ones that are easy. I also have his Tein setup that will be going on soon once I clean them up a bit, and the SYMS spoiler once I paint my wingless trunk. Also have the 20mm rear sway bar that I need to powdercoat before throwing on.

Thanks

Got it from DLC, and I'm not sure where he got it. I'm sure he'll chime in soon.

I got the rear bar from a member on NASIOC, and the front came with the car.

Looking good!

How's the sound?

Finally! A decent pic of the "other" Cusco strut brace. Here's the one that DOESNT fit the Legacy model range, but fits the Impreza due to greater underhood clearance.

See the differences in the mounting arms?

I'm snagging this pic for my records.

There are many more on my gallery, and I have the same bar on my BK4 if you want some more close ups, angles, and action shots...

Haha, Maybe next year, If i could find a JDM one that wasn't $300+ on eBay or something, or find a used 03-04 one.

I mean, I still haven't even put on my rear JDM one yet, so.... I need to get in gear with that before procrastinating on another bumper

What about and Outback bumper like Airgne has?

What about and Outback bumper like Airgne has?

They're a little too "round" for how I want the car to look. I feel that the BE has enough sharp lines to justify the same traits on the front bumper (a la 03-04 bumper)

I also think it looks different on different colors, it's not terrible on white, but I'm just not 100% on it

I better grill, rims and a drop will change the look on that car. Sometimes 1 modification can only look good with another.

Aw, it's not that hard to change rear bumbers. With a mate, it's a 30 min job at tops. That said, it took me 2 months to finally get around to removing my front bumper to have a fiddle around with some stuff behind it.

For your info, i have a pile of oversized items in my garage. A JDM GC face lift back bumper, a V6 STi spoiler, and some clear GC tails... they are going onto a pallet to send to the states. I'm sure theres room for a B4 front bumper, to match the rear. :D

Ben,

i've thought about that, but it's the fins that are the ugliest part of the bumper, one way or another i want them gone.

And Reuben, I know it's not hard to install, but I need to paint it and fix the fender lip so it matches and only have one side done. After that it'll be no problem.

What are the chances of finding a 3rd gen bumper for sub-$200usd?

Reuben

Pretty slim, you are asking the impossible. We are swimming in them here, but none that cheap, especially not after shipping.

I will keep an eye out, if i see one for under $150 NZ (Giving some room for shipping), i will send you a link.

And heres my cusco sticker :p

Haha yea I've been busy with other crap and other than the summer wheels, not much changed over the last year.

The tow hook is bolted to the factory location.

And I took the advice of rougeben83 and upgraded my radiator since it developed a crack. Mmmmmm 2.5" thick core:

MoclovFlop
11-25-2010, 01:45 AM
All stock, and every mounting point on the car and radiator is the same. The only issue was a small return inlet (or outlet) that had to be plugged on the passenger side.

But for $125 shipped, it's a way better alternitive to stock.

Car looks amazing, I like the fender flares. How do you like te exhaust? I'm jealous you got the Cusco front and rear strut bars... How difficult was the installation? Do you have the part numbers for them? If not, can you please check the bars for the part number and post for reference? Would be greatly appreciated... Thanks

MoclovFlop

The exhaust is fine, a little quiet for my liking, but according to DLC it's most likely the only, or one of few in the US. A better engine in front of it would solve the quiet issue...

Strut bars installation was simple a few nuts undone and that's it.

As for part numbers, i'll have to get back to you on that, I'm lazy. Probably get them this Friday.

I remember from his videos, you don't really hear the exhaust much until you get pass 3500 rpms... I really liked how it looked on our USDM bumpers on his car and the sound though.

And friday is fine with me, I hope the strut bars have part numbers on them, one would have to believe they do...

Thanks

Hmm, glad that worked for you, I completely forgot the stock ej251 doesn't have the little overflow connection on the passenger side that is used for the coolant hardtank on the turbo engines. I'll have to make a note of that for future reference...

Ok, part numbers for the strut bars are:

Rear: 680 541 A
Front: 680 540 A

Luckily for you, the OEM part number stickers were still on them.

Awesome thanks a bunch. I did research thislast week and had those part numbers as the correct ones for a BE/BH, I just needed solid proof and confirmation. This is greatly appreciated.

When you installed them did you lift the car up to take pressure off the suspension? Also did you have to cut any of the rear carpet in the trunk to get the bar to fit?

Thanks!

MoclovFlop

Lift the car: No, they went on with no issues.

Cut the carpet: Yep, you had to cut square notches for the bar to come out.
