hey everybody! just got a question about the h6. is it possible to stick a svx or one of the xt6 motors into a legacy. i know if a svx motor is used i would need a 96 or 97 because of obdII. if any one has some info it would be nice.

not going to do it now mine still purrs like a kitten but it's a thought for when my car craps on me since i haven't heard of it being done.

It's possible, but a lot of work. That thread will probably contain most of the known information on the subject, most people give up and just do turbo swaps haha.

Here's the low down on the SVX:

The EG33 does not fit in an Impreza or Legacy engine bay without modification. Here's why: The EG33 is 6 inches longer than any EJ engine. That means it'd be bashing the radiator in the front of the engine bay. People have put them in imprezas, but they had to do a lot of custom fabrication to make it fit.

Not worth it considering the EZ30 engine in the newer outbacks (05+) make more power and are the same size as an EJ engine, considering they were made for the Legacy engine bay.

The ER27 engine is not worth it because you'd need to change the flywheel setup, and modify a few other things to make it work with an EJ transmission. Not to mention that it doesn't make much more power than an EJ22.

The problems with the EZ30 are many.

1) It's a leak prone engine. Every one I've ever seen leaks like a bad faucet.

2) You almost HAVE to run a standalone. Swapping everything is awful, and the ECU for the EZ30 has so many emissions related influences, that if they arent all swapped, the car won't run. Not to mention that stupid things like HVAC and stuff are ECU controlled.

3) No aftermarket. Granted the EG33 doesn't have a vast aftermarket, it does have a displacement advantage.

I've thought long and hard about the EG33 swap. I think it's possible with some work. The engine will drop in, and the only major conflicts I can see are radiator clearance. That can be worked around, and I'd imagine you could use slim fans mounted between the radiator and the AC condensor.

The EG33 bolts directly to a pull-type transmission, so that's simple enough. And swapping the entire SVX wiring harness and ECU should net you fairly decent results.

The biggest limit behind the EG33 power wise, is engine tuning. The engine was designed with a heavy ass, automatic coupe to be behind it, and as such was tuned to be fairly reserved to preserve the transmission. I'd be with engine management, you could see upwards of 30whp gains.
