I've had a few of these. If it's the base GL and not the GL-10 depending on the age you're looking at the EA-82 1.8L motor. I'd imagine it either has duel range Hi/Low 4WD or push-button, or the little knob thingy. The non turbo motor came with FI in the later 80's models. If you were lucky you got the turbo motor witch featured the MPFI system. IIRC they came in either a wagon, sedan, or a 3 door coupe.

The GL interior is a step up from the DL model, but still isn't as nice as the GL-10. The GL-10 had the velure interior and a different style with a height adjustment on the drivers seat, headrests in the back, and IIRC carpeted headliner. Not to mention the turbo motor and digital display with the super sweet trip computer.

My dad's 88 GL had the EA-82 turbo motor with the standard GL trim with the push button 4WD. My 88 GL-10 had the auto tranny with the automatic 4WD.

They all featured the 13in wheels. The turbo model had 4 wheel disc brakes.

I presonally think that 88 was the best year they made. It had the newer smoother bumpers on it and didn't look like such a box.

Basically what I'm getting at is that I need more info on the car to tell you anymore info. You really can't go wrong with a GL though. They are such great cars and go through snow like stink.

Yeah, my buddy use to own a beat down GL-10 and it was the most fun to drive car ever!! We beat the living snot out of that turbo motor and it took it over & over. If you ever come across one of those cars, GET IT!!!
As for the regular GL series cars, they're very solid and there is a fair amount of replacement parts on the internet these days too.

I wish I had the money to get an old GL, lift it, put some Mud Terrain T/A's on it, and have one of the best offroad machines around....

as someone who drives offroad for work (over 2000 hours now) and had ta k/o's on their car, i can assure you that the soob is a mediocre replacement for a real offroad (or even decent suv) rig. The modifications required would take you a lot further in something that starts out more competent.

Take into account the price of a GL, the granny gear, the extremely low center of gravity, the 4wd, being able to fit 29'' tires (after a lift) and I'd say that youd have a pretty compitent off-road machine for next to nothing ($$).

yes there is a story behind it, although its not much of one. when i first got the car one of my friends kept calling it a bubaru and it just stuck so now it is reffered to as the bubaru.

Have you driven a GL off road? The ones with the 4Lo setting are pretty competent even without big tires and a lift.
