yet another nOOb!

i am currently in the process of buying my first subaru, ive been lurching on here for about two weeks, and i must say i like, and appreciate all of the info i have gotten so far.

i am going to be purchasing a 1997 Legacy Brighton Wagon.
94000 miles
5 speed, this will also be my first manual tranny.
$4000 is what im paying.

I have always wanted a wagon, and I have always wanted a subaru...so i thought, wy not get a Subaru Wagon?

I have some plans for it, i just dont know what all i can do to it yet.

any suggestions as to the first thing i should do to it?

Wheels are nice, springs and shocks are fun, and exhaust sounds nice ;)

Welcome!

yeah im definately going to be upgrading exhaust and i want to get an intake, but i havent had much luck finding one, im prolly not looking in the right places. i would also like to do some suspension upgrades, but i am limited on funds. i think i will start with exhaust. i want something kinda like Plays_with_Toys exhaust http://media.putfile.com/legacy-exhaust-42, but i think it might be a little too loud on the interior, judging from the video. i love the way it sounds though.

It's not as intrusive as you may think. Suspension is also not as expensive as you'd think, if you do simple things.

Read the several threads on here about the ebay intake, apparently it works just as well as any other aftermarket system. Theres tons of info on the site

If you were closer, you could have my entire exhaust for like $30. Its too loud for my tastes. Its vibrates the inside panels and gets annoying on longer trips. I just got a WRX stock catback and will be installing it shortly. Wagons have the big open space in back which magnifies the sound.

Why a Brighton? Are you going to mod heavily?

Oh well, Welcome!

bgwagon - serious about selling?

I checked out you cardomain page - I might be interested if you can get some better quality pics, and some more detailed info on the car - service records etc.

I'm looking for a white wagon, to do some hauling and with some looks/handling. Not sure about the kit, because I'd use it year round - is the hippo sleek conversion reversible?

Sorry for the hijack!

Because Brighton's kick ass! Less shit to break, much much lighter.

And yeah, it's a good platform for a major build.

Anyways, welcome, and nice find on the wagon

im getting the brighton cause its just about all this guy has, and its cheap. he has an outback, but its newer and more expensive. i was recently hit by a dui...i wass the third car she hit, she totaled my car. so the insurance money, and about 1000 from my 401k, and 900 from my girlfriends parents are getting this car. its about the best deal i could find for a car around here.

i would love to do aloooot of modding. i am just very low on cash all the time, but iif i just do one thing at a time its all that matters. i test drove a couple that he had, and liked this one better. he has another one, a burgandy with 130000 for 3200, but the one im getting is cleaner.

i should be getting the insurance check in the next couple of days, and have the car friday hopefully.

3rd DUI? People shouldn't be on the road for a looooong time after the first, much less the 2nd.

3 strikes, she should be history.

don't forget to check www.craigslist.org (http://www.craigslist.org) for some deals. I sold my truck and bought my car there. Just go to your local chapter of craigslist.

4000 is a pretty good price for the mileage i think. I paid $4800 for mine with 112k...

Brighton FTW!

1000 from my 401k,

WTH are you doing messing with your 401k? Leave it alone!
it's for LONG TERM SAVINGS...

If you can't afford the sub now, buy a cheap car, get on a spending plan (aka Budget) and commit to saving up for one.

drano
09-12-2006, 04:04 PM
ok, well it wsnt pulled from my 401k. i work for eckerd, and you can borrow off of your 401k with a really good interest rate. then they just take it out of my paycheck to pay it back, its a good deal, i wouldnt have done it otherwise.and its tax free while i have it :)

and i pretty much have to do it this way, i dont have a car, and i need a reliable one. my commute sucks its about an hour to an hour a half drive. i cant find a decent car for less than 3000 around here, ive tried.

Huffer

Bummer... I don't envy your position - I was close to that position, but now I have enough saved up that if the car is wiped out, I can pay cash for a replacement, without even touching insurance policies.

It's great security, because I'm no millionaire (but I will be!).

so, he had sold the car when i got there.....BUT i was able to get a 1997 Outback with 133000miles with an AT and i paid $4500 for it.

so a few questions:

1. Should my exhaust be whistling with WOT?
2. What is the best way to remove crappy tent from windows?
3. did i get a decent deal?

i like it alot, i love the way it drives, i had to drive it down the mountains where i live to get home....i loved every second of it.

pics will come tomorrow

First thing, drain the ATF & replace with your preferred major brand, and a bottle of Lubegard ATF protectant (red bottle). It'll save your ass.

2nd thing - check for exhaust leaks, or even a worn-out air filter.
Do the normal things for a tune up - oil filter, fuel filter etc.
Check on the timing belt - hopefully that got done at 90,000miles.

Best way to remove crappy tint - heat the tint with a hairdryer and use a razor-blade, plenty of soapy water and patience.

$4500 for a 97 Outback w/ 130k is pretty decent. Wish I got a wagon, frankly.

Whistling could be as easy as the airbox not being snugged down correctly, or another vacuum hose around the intake.

Not sure about tint, and $4500 sounds about right. Depends on your area, and how available subarus are. They're a couple hundred to thousand cheaper in colorado because we are over flowing with them lol.

well its coming from the exhaust, like from the tailpipe. i replaced the air filter today and cleaned it up alt. i bought some mothers back to black, and alot of other goodies and made it really nice looking, way better than when i got it.

Ah the beauty of the Scottish court system. Over here she would have been jailed, and forced to attend a rehabilitation program for alcoholics before being allowed to re-apply for a driving licence. Even then she would need to resit the driving test, which is becoming harder nowadays.

Best way to remove window tint is to spray straight ammonia on the window, very heavy spray, then while it is wet, put plastic film (actually, a garbage bag works best) onto the window (it will "stick" to the damp window). The ammonia will permeate the tint film and break down the adhesive after a couple of hours (or less depending on the application). The garbage bag prevents the ammonia from evaporating off too quickly. The film usually just peels after this, leaving only nuscience adhesive that can be removed with a razor or "Goop Off" or similar cleaner.

Wiscon_Mark

To make sure none of the ammonia evaporates and makes it nasty to breathe, drink the rest...

Sorry Mark - I forgot to add "it is advisable NOT to sit in the car waiting for the two hours to pass"... Also, if you re-tint the windows, don't wash them with ammonia based cleaners after tinting. The reason will become very clear if you follow the procedure I suggested!

cool thanks for the tip with the ammonia, ill prolly use that method.

i have my first problem now, one of my high beams is out, ill get a replacement saturday.
