I think my brakes are shot and I was wonder what OEM or aftermarket brake kits will fit under the stock 98 GT 16s? Front and Rear suggestions and anyone else that has actually done this would be awesome.

thanks

have you considered oem with some good road/track pads? That should be sufficient for any on-road driving.

Plus it saves you the headaches of muddling though the aftermarket figuring out who actually knows about bias and brake proportioning.

Your probably right. Can you recommend a good rotor and pads? This is just my daily driver and I don't need anything for racing or anything of that nature. Does anyone sell brand new calipers too? Mine are pretty nasty looking.

rotors: brembo blanks.

Dealers sell them, you're unlikely to find any other place that will stock new OEM calipers.

Just because they are nasty looking doesn't mean they're crap - clean them up a bit!

a wire brush, some patience and you might even be able to repaint them yourself in any color you want. :)

Someone on here did a DIY about cleaning/painting the brakes. His brakes were all rusted up, but when he went and cleaned them it turned out to be caked on brake dust.

I'd pull the caliper pins too, clean them up and use some fresh grease. Mmm, fresh grease!

Next question...who stocks Brembos cheap and what pads should I run and where to get them? What other Subaru shares the exact same Front or Rear Brakes?

This was a pretty good discussion about this sort of topic...

To answer your original question, biggest you can fit are the BE Legacy GT/WRX brakes ; 11.4" rotors for the front. Biggest would be the BF Legacy vented rear discs (same as the "H6" rotors the BE legacies got but vented w/ chunkier caliper).

Big brakes are more about heat capacity and fade resistance than shortening stopping distances. That's probably one of the big misnomers people have about trying to "improve" their brakes.

rougeben83 is absolutely right, as WRX 4 pots will bolt straight up.

I'm having a set installed tomorrow along with 294mm (~11.5") vented and slotted rotors. 4 pot calipers will bolt up without any clearance problems at all with stock MY98 wheels.

No real need to go crazy with the rears but swapping them for vented discs (as they're solid on my '93 GX  ) and installing a slightly more agressive set of pads will work wonders.

No problems with balance either as the standard master cylinder is more than adequate. But just for good measure, am having a Cusco brake bracket installed

Can't wait to try them out so will let you know shortly

Be careful. The MY98 rims in Australia were likely 17's.

WRX 2-pots will fut under any USDM 16" wheel that came on any Subaru.

However, the 4-pots, which are what came on overseas WRX's as well as 06+ WRX sedans and wagons, require a 16x7 OEM wheel (which means 98-01 RS wheels) or a rally/motorsports type 16".

Nope. MY98 are the same as the RS Golds here in the US. The MY99 and MY00 STi got the 6-spoke RS 16x7 wheels.

Should have clarified, I was talking about Legacies. :D

Every turbo GC/M/F had 16x7's after the verIII, IIRC, except the UK-only P1 with 17's. Not sure about the non-turbo models.

Yes, I apologise guys as I should have clarified too: stock MY98s were 16x7s (PCD 5x100 ET+53) on AUS delivered WRXs. Mighty nice and super light. (Even have one as a full-size spare  )

The following factory rims take Subaru 4 pots without any clearance issues:

5 spoke 16x7 (my set after being cleaned and before being shod and bolted to my '93 GX)

6 spoke 16x7 (this picture shows twin pots but you can see there's plenty of room for 294mm 4 pots in there)

twin spoke 17x7

17x7 JDM Legacy GTB TT (just to appease sybir  )

I may stand corrected but I'm pretty sure you can go to an ET of +48 (eg 22B wheels) before having issues with 4 pot clearance?

Lower offsets generally don't have any clearance issues, as you're moving the spokes out, away from the hub. Some aftermarket wheels are exceptions, but any 17" that fits a Scoob should clear 4-pots, it's jsut the narrow (6.5") stock wheels with eh 55 offset that sit in too far and have clearance issues.

I've had 2 sets of the silver 5-spokes and 2 sets of the silver 6-spokes, they're killer wheels. Unfortunately, they're in rather short supply in the US these days.

And just in case you missed it...

VoilĂ !

'93 GX
WRX 16x7
4 pot brakes (w/ vented slotted rotors)

As you can see, plenty of clearance behind those wheels to accomodate 4 pots, so don't let anyone tell you it can't be done!

Pads (Bendix Ultimates) still need to bed in but should be OK within a few hundred km. Coupled to the Cusco brake booster...

This mod probably gives an equal bang for buck (and Grin Factor!) as installing a big rear swaybar (20-22mm) I was giggling like a moron all the way home...
