View Full Version : Suspension or turbo build

Ok, so me being a nice poor Asian college student I have to make a choice. Suspension/exhaust first or turbo engine build first?

Suspension/exhaust
-KYB AGX struts
-Rear sway bar
-Whiteline Control Springs
-Fender braces
-Prodrive Oval Tip muffler with Greddy midpipe

Turbo Engine
-EJ22T block (needs rebuild)
-2.5 DOHC heads
-...that's as far as I got.

For the most part the suspension/exhaust could happen in the next couple of weeks, while the turbo engine build would probably take a year or more for the build since I have a limited source of income. I honestly can't decide though. Bwaaa!

definetly suspenstion & brakes first. You need better control before more power, or both at the same time!

I would tend to agree

I know it's not the answer you want but what they said.

i would just throw on the struts and springs, then see if the rear bar is necessary. Fender braces can be done any time you have cash laying about.

Alrighty suspension it is...

BUT

what could I do to add a little extra power for the meantime? I just bought a Suby Sport Lightened Crank Pulley (ya I know that doesn't add power), but what else?

The pulley may not add any power, but if you have a 4EAT it will feel like it adds a bit since it lets the engine rev alittle faster. How much are you looking to spend for "alittle extra power"? I have heard some guys get good results with exhuast work and a piggy-back ECU chip. Those chips can get pretty damn expensive though...

Um, a couple hundred I suppose. I have a 5-speed. I'm waiting for a guy to find another Prodrive exhaust then I'm buying his axleback Prodrive and matting it with a Greddy midpipe. I was also thinking a K&N, but I got to searching around on here and from what I read, it's not worth the money for performance. I also have an old Super AFC that works too. Lastly I'm thinking of running the Perfect Power.

Was the SAFC a easy install? I have a SAFC II and have yet to put it in. Once in it will be take to a dyno and tuned. Did you have it dynoed?

A Pulley doesn't add power, it just makes the drivetrain more efficient.

As for power...well, it's build big or go home, really. Intake and Exhaust sound nice, but they do very little for either dyno (butt or real).

Suspension is on my list after bushings overhaul ;)

As i understood it a lightened pulley did add horse power.

It does not make the engine produce more horsepower, it just gets more of the existing power to the wheels.

+1

Less rotaional mass that the engine has to spin. This make the engine rev faster making it "feel" like it is putting out more power. When infact it is taking less power to actually "move" the drivetrain, thus placing that recovered power to the tranny and wheels...

I haven't installed the Super AFC yet, but I will sometime soon.

I just bought:
JDM Grille
JDM Orange Sidemarkers

You'll like the super AFC. Let me know if you need help with any installs man!

Will I seriously notice a difference? I had it installed on my Impreza and didn't really notice a thing. Although I've been told that the Super AFC will respond better to the MAP sensor so I guess we will see.

it seems this was covered well, but I would agree suspension first. Make your car so it can better handle the power you already have and more when that time comes.

Do brakes too.

You don't have a MAP sensor...

Oops... I meant a MAF...?

Add brakes and tires as well. If you have mad suspension and crappy tires, you might as well be a hot looking chick on iceskates at the beach. You ain't goin' nowhere.

The Korean, do you go to CSM?

i agree with brakes. when that jerk in front of you stops way quicker than he/she should and you stop on a dime saving all your precious jdm goodies and work, you'll be glad you did brakes.

I am!!!

I agree about the tires thing. My Legacy handled so much better on the Xones vs. the hydroedge...but my dad gave me the hydroedge tires for free, so...

Anyways, I also agree on brakes. Give yourself the capability to handle the power you'll be making later on.

Or handle the power you have now. 60mph is still 60mph. ;)

crap tires are fun. They allow for larger slip angles and you don't have to go as fast to slide.

No need to do the brakes if you're not overheating the stock ones.

Yes yes I am quite poor, lol. Getting ready to move out, just bought the wagon, and um... a few other things I think.

No I don't go to CSM... I go to Metro State.

The first thing I did was put wider tires on the car... I'm running 205s. For now I think it's going to be only (well will be the next mods to come)
Prodrive Oval Tip
Whiteline RSB

if you want performance, skip the tip.

Oh it will be matted with a Greddy Midpipe... so aftermarket catback FTW...
